: replace windshield..how much?
mgbrillo 01-31-2008, 02:09 AM got hit by a rock, and thought it was just a little chip, next day, there's a big crack in the windshield (driver side). thought of just replacing the whole thing and went to the dealership and they quoted me for $460. Is this reasonable? or too much? im here at houston. anybody know a good place to get the windshield replaced? thanks
joedosa 01-31-2008, 02:36 AM this is the quote i got from master-glass.com for my Mada a while ago..
The quote to replace your windshield would be $249, parts and labor, installed at your work or home. Please note that we at MasterGlass provide the following:
· Professional Trained Installers.
· Factory Quality or Original Equivalent Glass.
· One Hour Installation Time, and One Hour Curing/Drying Time.
· Workmanship is Guaranteed 100% for The Life of the Windshield.
BlakSpyda 01-31-2008, 07:57 AM Why not just go through your insurance company? I got my windshield replaced for $100 through Allstate. If you got full coverage, most insurance companies will repair it for free (if it's a chip) or replace it for $100 glass deductable. Contact your insurance company to see what their rates are.
You will still get...

Didn't have to do this with the Armada yet but I have gotten 2 windshields replaced on my other cars using the car insurance. You will be using the comprehensive part of your insurance and not collision. Also got the deductible waived. No out of pocket cost.

That's even better!
HarleyD 01-31-2008, 10:27 AM MG, I've used Safelite Auto glass here in Houston a couple of times. Regardless of who replaces it, tell the installer to MAKE SURE he seals the windshield correctly. The last thing you want is a floor board full of water after a nice Houston rain storm. This happened to me while my truck was parked at the airport for a week. By the time I got in it that wonderful mildew smell had set in. I could not get rid of that smell, even after replacing the padding underneath the carpet. Ended up trading it in.

Safelite did my Allstate windshield replacement and I was not please with how it was sitting in the seal. I told them I wasn't satisfied, they ordered a new windshield and reinstalled it with no questions asked.
spta97 01-31-2008, 11:30 AM I had Safelite replace a windshield and a window in previous cars and was not crazy about their workmanship. They also use non-OEM products to boot.
That said, replacing through glass insurance is your best bet. I didn't have any leaks or issues, just was not crazy about the install.
fyrfytersarmada 01-31-2008, 11:29 PM Just had mine done last week. My insurance did not cover it, but I paid $209 out the door. Like spta97 said, be careful to get an OEM windshield or one that is made by a major glass manufactuer. If not the black paint around the edge of the windshield may be different. I used Harmon auto glass, through glassdoctor.com, and was very satisfied. I even got $30 dollars off for driving the 5 minutes to their shop and waiting only 20 minutes to have it done. $460 is very expensive, check online for more quotes.
mgbrillo 02-01-2008, 02:51 AM thanks for all your replies... i may need to check with my insurance if there's anything they can do for my situation. i'm just worried though that if I go thru my insurance (farmers), this may reflect (as claims) that may affect rates when I renew.
a friend told me that he can help me out (discounts) with affordable glass (in hillcroft, houston). anybody tried this shop? a co-worker of mine had his windshield replaced just 2 weeks ago from this shop and when I looked at his car (chevy impala 06) it seems good (work) but i noticed that there was no rubber seal (that rubber thing) at the sides of the windshield. I'm not familiar with impala's if they have that (originally) or its just like the windshield was "glued" (or sealed) from the inside and nothing else on the outside. I'll call them tomorrow for a qoute. again, if anybody has any experience with this shop, please share and rate the work. thanks again.
Hey everyone...
A big 'ole piece of ceramic tile got horny for my windshield - the result: a good size crack running 18" vertical on the passenger side.
Insurance (AAA) said any windshield repair is going to be under $500 (my deduc.), so they could refer me. I called the 'stealership' and am waiting on a quote. After reading all the above posts about low deductibles or no deductibles, I'm thinking I need to re-evaluate my coverage!!
My insurance referred me to SafeLite ($266.34), but I haven't heard great things (given some of the above posts). Do you really think its worth it to shell out a few extra dollars to replace it at the dealer? Hmmm...
Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks much!
~ Zire
Regarding the above...
The 'stealer' just called - quoted $550.76 for a factory windshield with seals, labor.
... then tried to give me the whole story about a "customer last week who installed a non-facotry windshield and couldn't see out of it because of the glare".
$266.34 - SafeLite
vs.
$550.76 - "Stealership"
WTF?

spta97 04-16-2008, 02:08 PM The dealership is (as they always do) ripping you off. I would check another place to see if you can get an OEM windshield put in.
"Could not see out because of the glare" ....come on
Edit: On a side note to EVERYONE, upgrade your insurance to add full glass coverage (only like $100 / year) and THEN tell them you had an incident. I have replaced at least 3 glass panels (including a windshield) with no increase to my preimum or out of pocket expense. I called to check with them first and they said there is no increase because it is unavoidable. If it happens 5 times a year, then....
Heck, I'd just ask the glass shop what they charge to install an OEM windshield. The OEM windshield is only $260.

After reading Pops & spta97's posts, I did a little more research... which only led to more questions:
Do I need molding too? The 'stealership' is telling me that for molding AND the factory windshield its: $347.12.
Add tax $28.64 & install $175... that equals $550.76
For comparison's sake, SafeLite wants $100 just to install if I have the glass.
I cannot stand being hosed by the 'stealer' and I'm feeling it coming on...
Anyone know about the molding issue?
Thanks in advance!!
~ Zire
Ummmm, the molding is only $30. Here's all the parts:

I would do Safelite. I used them three times on my Montero (2 windshield replacements and one passenger window) and twice on the Armada (once for a windshield change and once for a chip).
On the Armada windshield change, they did it wrong and had to do it again. The bottom line is they stand behind their work.
Okay... so the windshield was replaced, but now I'm faced with a NEW, HUGE issue:
The dealer put the blue "painter's tape" in the top two corners of the windshield/part of the roof, with the instructions not to wash the car or remove the tape for 48 hours. After 48 hours I removed the tape.... BUT...
When I pulled the tape off of the driver's side, it removed two small areas of PAINT from just above the windshield. They are each about 1/8 round, but I can clearly see what is an off-white primer/base coat underneath... and I can feel the divets in the paintjob.
Needless to say, the dealer got a 'friendly' phone call from me this morning and his only response was "bring it by, we'll take a look".
Any suggestions, aside from making them repair it? I just don't want these two spots to become areas for weathering, water intrusion, further opening/cracking/chipping of the paint, etc.

Touch-up paint. Most Paintless Dent Repair guys know how to blend in touchup so it's totally unnoticeable even when close up.

cshirley 04-21-2008, 05:04 PM Mine's a safelite. Its clear so I guess its a good windshield. Allstate paid for mine on comprehensive and it was $330 at the first place I checked around here. I called Allstate after the incident and told them what happened. My deductible was $500 so they told me if I wanted to lower my deductible to $0 which comes out to another $80/year then they would forget I called and I could call back in another couple weeks with my cracked windshield claim. lol. Gotta love insurance companies that will work with you, after all at 23 years old I pay for a new windshield in insurance costs every couple months anyway.

I don't know how the insurance companies are in other states...But I don't pay deductible for windshield replacement. I have always had the windshield shops come to my house or where I worked and they replaced it on the spot. I have never had a problem in 40 years...
Thanks Pops!!

... Took it to the stealer... he used touch-up paint, then said to bring it back in two weeks, after the paint has set/hardened, to "buff it out". Never asked one question about anything involved with the removal of the paint, the tape, etc. He just looked at it and said "we'll take care of it".
One of the perks: I got a free tube of touch-up paint. :)
As long as they are making good on it, I'm happy.
