: Cabin Boom in my '05?

I was wondering if anyone with an '05 is experiencing what I think is cabin boom. When traveling around 70mph+, I start experiencing a fluttering or booming sound in the cabin. I know there is a TSB for the '04, but what about the '05?

Are you getting this with windows closed? or open?
I just started to notice this last week with my windows closed. The headliner is shaking so much that the whole plastic DVD piece is coming off the snaps. The 4 screws holding the roof console on is not enough support.

It's with the windows up. As far as the DVD piece goes, those snaps that are just to the outside of the control console wont even stay engaged. They keep popping off, which was causing the squeek up there. I ended up taking the metal clips off and no more squeaking, but I know what you mean by the entire console shaking.

There's a post somewhere on clubarmada with great pictures and all on how to put tape around the metal clips and pop back in. That cures the rattles and holds the clips in tighter so they don't pop back out.
Gotta find that post though...

yes, yes....I am....Now what can we do about it since the TSB says for 2004.

BUMP...any other '05 owners having this issue?

I seem to have this when one window is opened. It's so bad that it hurts your ears. As soon as a second window is opened it goes away. Anyone know if there is a fix for this issue?

AH, so "CABIN BOOM" is the sound I hear when I open the window and I'm driving around 65? Sounds like a DAMN helicopter is in my Mada!

I could be wrong, BUT how can you fix this problem.....this is like a physics thing....it's just going to happen.

JM is right though, if you get the right combo of windows opened together, you don't really hear it anymore.

The helicopter sound is right...but I had mine with the windows closed on certain roads. Not sure what to tell you on the '05 models other than take it to the dealer. Mine used to get really bad at 45 and about 75mph.

There will always be some cabin boom. This is air trying to force its way in with no way to go out the back, so it flexes the truck like a drum as the air pressure changes up and down. Larger the cabin, larger the boom. Letting air escape out the rear will solve most of this. '04 had more flex than '05 so the "drum" effect was more pronounced because it had weaker attachments of liner too roof. There is a TSB to correct this for '04. I believe they upgraded this with the new parts/corrected the situation for '05 so I don't know what to say but as was said, take it to the dealer. I don't have too much in mine. If I open front windows it is loud. Give it an escape like opening up rear windows or better still, windows in 3rd row and it quiets dramatically as the air has an escape. Just another reason I love LE. It has power 3rd row windows with control in front roof console. Hope this helps.

I wonder if dynomatting the roof will help with the boom, since it is theoretically caused by panel flex?

As mentioned before it is probably a physics thing. Everything has a resonance frequency. That is why it only happens at a certain mph (not all mph). At that "perfect" frequency, the pressure waves will increase, at other frequencies the pressure waves cancel each other out. So if you 'mat the interior you could reduce but will most likely just change the resonance frequency to something new. May be worth a try though. This is the same theory as if you have a platoon of men marching across a bridge can they resonate the bridge and collapse it (theoretically yes). If you were ever in the military, that's why you don't "march" across a bridge.

Dynamating the roof would help some, but not solve the problem. It would also be costly and a PITA to dyanmat the roof. Opening rear windows releases the built up pressure and allows egress of the waves instead of having them rebound back toward the front.

A good example of soldiers marching on a bridge is in the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. They march over a bridge into a prison camp in one scene. The rear rank looks like they are bouncing up and down 2 feet.

The only thing that will really work to solve the boom is to have the TSB done- they will attach the roof to the crossbows, preventing the "ripple" effect.

The dynamat will only stop the roof from resonating like a tin can, but it won't solve the boom as without the TSB the wave effect will still happen.

In my '04 it made a world of difference!

I test drove an 05' it has cabin boom. I have been researching buying an Armada for a while now. I can't tolerate the cabin boom.

Never heard of an SUV WITHOUT cabin boom. Its physics, its gonna happen. As I said, mine has little, but its there. Course, I'm critical of noise having been a stereo installer for years. They did add sound proofing and changed the roofing as detailed earlier. Also, if I open the far rear power windows (LE option), the air flows through and doesn't boom. Personally, I very rarely open the Armada. I drive a vert for open air, and keep the capsule sealed on most other rides so the music is clear. I'd test drive something else and compare it to see if you think it is any different. (EX: Suburban, Escalade, etc.) Will be more quiet in Sequoia as it isn't nearly as large.

I have had 3 Suburbans 92', 98, 02 and 1 Tahoe 03. No cabin Boom.

I think it's a physics thing too. I get it on my wife's Maxima & also on my Dodge Dakota quad cab.

Since the TSB I've had no boom in my Armada.

No Boom in my 04 but my 1997 Chevy 1t Crewcab had boom and it was elevated to unbearable if you even slightly cracked a rear window without opening the fronts first.

I had the TSB done on my 04 and it fixed the boom. Its barely noticable at all now. Before, it was horrible. I have owned alot of suv's and never had this before. But the TSB fixed it. I am happy now.

The level of "boom" is subjective. It can be lowered to barely noticable but it is still present. By saying these had and '05 have boom isn't incorrect. However the amount compared to an '04 is dramatically less. I would say they have a similar amount and less than '04. Can this be a reasonable middle ground? :crikey:

There's definitely something going on around the magic speed of 75-80mph on the '05 Mada I drove. It's kinda borderline in my opinion, since this is probably a common highway cruising speed. I'd be a little concerned that it could start to get fatiguing on a long journey of several hours.

This is with all windows tighly close, incidentally. You can typically create boom in just about any vehicle with the correct opening of certain windows/sunroof.

yup just picked up an se 05 4wd. no dvd . and have noticed a slight booming when mildly accelerating from 45-53 mph. Im going to bring it in this week and talk to my service and sales guys since i complained about this from day one. let me know what anyone finds out or any fixes.
