(Thanks to BlakSpyda and Pops for welcoming me to CA.)

I know this has all been discussed on CA, but after reading the various threads I can't get a good feel for the general consensus. Here are my questions and/or comments ...

How big of a job is the tranny/differential oil change? I'm wondering if I'd be better served taking it to a tranny shop to have this work done. Keep in mind that I'm no shade tree mechanic, but I have the standard tools and can handle the basics (oil change, spark plugs, O2 sensors, etc.). I know this is a hard question to answer when you don't know my skills or tools at hand.

It looks like people are split on dino vs. synthetic engine oils, but everyone seems consistant on the use of synthetic for the tranny and differential. True?

Are all oil filters equal or is there a preferred brand?
The dealer told me there's a copper ring that gets replaced on the oil plug everytime the oil is changed. Is that true and, if so, is it necessary to have/replace that ring?

Thank you ... Chris

1. The differential oil change is easy. Just remove the two plugs and let the oil drain completely. Then replace the drain plug and fill until oil runs out the fill hole. This will take a little over 2 quarts of oil; I would use a good synthetic 75W140, like Amsoil.
2. You really don't need to change the transmission fluid at 30K miles unless you have been doing a lot of heavy towing. If you decide to change, don't have it flushed. You can drop the transmission pan, clean it, reinstall and refill. This will require 4-5 quarts of fluid. To protect your warranty use only Nissan Matic J. It is a synthetic fluid designed for our transmissions. If you aren't worried about the warranty you can use Amsoil synthetic ATF. Amsoil states that it meets Nissan J specs.
3. I use Amsoil 5W30 synthetic in the engine. It has been proven to be a good performer.
4. I would use the factory oil filter. It has been proven to be a very good filter.
5. The copper gasket for the engine drain plug is included with the factory filter. You should always use a new gasket when you change the oil.

... for the info, scr38. Regarding your comment on not needing to change the transmission oil if I've not been hauling, would the same go for the differential?

Thanks,

Chris
