Engine quit while driving. All fuses good. Fuel guage shows 1/8 tank. No codes stored in OBDII. I plan to check for spark and fuel pressure, but can't get engine cover off. Afraid I will break the rear plastic cover mounts??? Car out of basic warr; 3 1/2 years old with 55K miles. Powertrain warr still in effect, but can't afford to take to dealer unless I can confirm bad fuel pump or other power train warr item. Any advice? I don't have a workshop manual for the car (Haynes does not yet publish one). Thanks.

Welcome to CA BMC West!
Sorry to meet on such bad terms, but I would start by putting in about 2-5 gallons of gas first. You say you have about an 1/8 of a tank (3.5 gal). There have been sending unit problems where the vehicle ran out without the light actually coming on.
Another question, is your vehicle trying to start by the starter working but not igniting fuel or what?

This is exactly what happened to ours. How many miles have you gone since your last fillup?
Welcome!!! Likely not needed for this but to answer the question, those rear mounts on the engine cover are just held in place with rubber bushings. You can lift it by pulling up hard and steady, keep it straight and don't wiggle. The Air Intake Box also uses these same exact rubber bushings.

Don't know how many miles since last fillup; my wife thinks she is saving money by only putting in half a tank. It cranks, but won't fire. I'll try putting in a couple gallons and trying again. Gotta go to work now, I'll continue tomorrow! Thanks.

Bingo! Put 3 gallons of fuel in and it started! Thanks again. Had fuel tank sender replaced under warr because guage would not go above 7/8 even when topped off. Complained again, but they said it was OK. Anyone know if there is a modified tank sender that is accurate? After the brake fiasco, I am not optomistic about out of warr repair, but it may be worth a try. Never really tested where it runs empty, but now I know it is 1/8 tank.
The Sending Unit should be more accurate than that. If it's 1/8th off, it's definitely NOT "Ok" and personally, I would demand that it get fixed right even if I had to borrow their shop to do it myself.

went to dealer today; service guy took my RO copies of warr tank sender replacement and follow up complaint that the guage was still inaccurate. Said he will "check with Nissan and let me know tomorrow".

Glory Be! Nissan paid for another fuel pump / sender assembly (50K miles). It was replaced under warr, then I complained it did not fix inaccurate fuel gauge; they said it was OK at the time. Helps to keep good records; always document problems. Hopefully the superseded tank unit is more accurate than the orgininal / first replacement. Thanks again for your comments.

Good deal. Glad they are handling it!
