Alright guys im getting my license in about 3 weeks and my dad and i have picked out some cars. after changing my mind several times (lol) i've set my sights on a 2002,2003 z06. we've discussed the costs and everything except there is one condition, the insurance cant be ridiculous. i have a 3.8 gpa at a very prestigious military academy and lets say i take defensive driving course and get insured as a second driver, will it still be ridiculous. also i wont be parking her at school. Dont think im brat for getting a first car like this please, i had to really bust my *** to earn it. hopefully 92TB will be able to chime in ;)

The insurance will still be rediculous. The only way to save on it would be to have the Vette paid in full and reduce your coverage to liability only. Vette parts aren't too hard to find if you need to replace body parts from a fender bender but if it's a Z06 then that's a different story. Most parts that are Z06 specific are likely to cost more than regular Vette parts.

In all honesty, I'd think you'd have more fun in something along the lines of a nice skyjacked hardtop Jeep or pickup truck or Land Rover. For the cost of that Z06, you could likely get a nice Tundra and mod and lift that baby to the sky and still have a nice vehicle with plenty of power to showoff to your buddies and keep offroad capabilities and save on insurance IMHO. But it all boils down to what you want, I just think that something along the lines of Slamdxterra's Armada is perfect for someone with the tastes that you appear to have and fwiw, he's got it up for sale and it is the only one of it's kind in the world.

Coming from someone that got their license 7 years ago...your insurance will likely be insane. I had a 4.0 in school, nothing on my record, etc. I was in the middle of making a deal on a 1998 Nissan 240sx when I found out that just because the car had the letters "sx" in it's name, my insurance for it doubled. I would be paying over $300/month. All because I was a new driver, and the car was considered a sports car due to the number and letters in the name. That may be different where you are at, but that's the experience I had, with over 6 different insurance companies.

You can easily call around and give the insurance companies an "idea" of the car you're getting...no VIN number or anything...and they can run the numbers for you based on the make, model and year.

Get ready to pay a rediculous insurance rate! Don't know how old you are but be prepared to pay because rates on a vette are already pretty high, when you get the z06, it will probably be rediculous like madachick said. I don't blame you though because I am currently looking to buy a nice used C5 to be used as a "fun/project car" which has pretty reasonable prices. Just don't do the same thing my wife did with her first car. She had a 95 Supra that was fixed up pretty good and ended up blowing up the motor. Thank God that was well before I met her! Lol!

Oh yeah....I would try USAA!! I have them and the only thing I regret was not using them sooner. You are at a military academy so you will be good.

will it still be insane if im insured as a second driver under my parents? should i just be insured as a primary driver of our honda civic n just drive the vette? lol pops youre right on the whole offroading thing but thats not my first love. i love fast cars and driving fast and i plan on attending as many track days and racing schools as i can. also me and my dad are gonna get an offroad specific vehicle that we can throw around more than the infiniti.

I do remember that I was insured under my mother, then I got two tickets (one speeding, one running a red light but you try and stop within 15 ft in an f-350 going 45mph!), and my mom had to drop me from her policy because they wouldn't carry her if I was still part of the policy. Just ask around...like I said you can always get quotes!

Be sure to keep your speed-racer tendencies on the track though...if you need to, ask Danny (PwrStrokinDually) how many speeding/speed racing tickets he got from age 16-25. Well over 20 I'll tell you that much. Going fast is definitely fun, but it has it's time and it's place :) Just recently we lost 2 local teenagers to a speed racing accident outside city limits. They hit gravel and both went out of control.

it wont matter if you are the third or fourth driver. a young kid with that much hp is gonna pay a crap load insurance. ins companies alos look at repair values, and a corvette is an expensive car to repair. it doesnt take much to total a z06; just look at all the salvaged title ones on ebay and the like. like pops said, for the $30k you'll spend on a chevy made of plastic you could have a really sweet truck, or even something like a charger or 300c hemi. then you'd still have the power but with out the "sports car" label. another idea: check the insurance prices of a g35 coupe against a z06. not quite as fast, but just as cool, and a lot better car. just an idea!!!
