: Someone tried to break into my gas tank!

As I mentioned in previous posts, I have not been driving the Armada as often since gas prices went up. As a matter of fact, the last time before tonight when I filled it up was May 25th!

So I pull into the gas station as my tank was finally running low and went to take off my locking gas cap (that was put on the day of my last fillup). The key was not fitting in the slot so I inspected it closer and discovered that the surrounding metal was all bent and damaged!

I was so annoyed not only that someone would mess with my truck, but that it could have happened anytime over the past two months so I had no hope of finding where it happend.

The only two places the truck is left unattended is infront of my house when I go out on the weekends or at the train station during the week.

I am not sure if some dope was trying to steal my gas, or if some tree hugger wanted to teach me a lesson  but I am happy that I got the locking gas cap.

In doing research it seems that when most people steal gas nowadays they punch a hole in the bottom of the tank and drain it out but either way I would suggest going to Autozone and spending the $15 on the cap. I live in a nice suburb in Long Island and never had to deal with crime in the 6 years I have been here.

I have a question though, is it possible to install an aftermarket alarm that has a pin swich for the gas tank cover? I fear I may not be so lucky next time and as gas gets higher and higher this type of crime will probably be common place.

So how did you get the gas cap off? I have been thinking about one for a while but still haven't. I guess I better.

I had a convertible and left the top down A LOT. I had the center console wired into the alarm with a pressure switch (eventually replaced with a motion sensor) so it's definitely possible.

I was able to take the key and bend back the metal so I could get it in the slot. I would imagine that they took a screw driver and twisted it which deformed the metal.

Thanks for the advice on the center console - I will have to look into this. I'm still surpised that Nissan cheaped out and did not make a locking cover but at least I don't have body damage to deal with.

Sorry to hear about your situation. It really stinks just to think that someone is putting their grubby hands on your ride.

A couple of weeks ago I was at the auto parts store buying some Royal Purple oil for some oil changes and saw the Stant locking gas cap display. I, like you, was thinking that as gas prices go up, people are going to start doing some stupid things. I picked one up since my truck sits at the airport for extended periods. Now, I'm really glad I did. It's good to know that you were still able to get the key in despite the damage.

Yeah, body damage would be a lot worse than loosing a tank of gas. I'm planning on picking a locking gas cap up tomorrow.
