: 08 SE DVD Questions
dkocse 10-07-2008, 10:27 PM Hello everyone:
Great site you have here... i'm planning on purchasing an Armada next week and had some questions that i'm sure someone here can help me with. I apologize if they were answered in another thread, i couldn't find it.
The Armada i am looking at is an 2008 SE. I am planning on adding the DVD player. Here are my questions:
Do all 2008 SE Armadas have the video screen on the dash... regardless if the car has NAV or DVD?
If so, is the wiring already set up so that when the player/screen is installed, they don't have to go behind the dash to have the video on the front screen?
i tried to get a quote from a Nissan dealership today... he just told me it was illegal to watch the DVD on the front screen... when i mentioned that it cuts out when in drive... he said all he knows is it's illegal.
Lastly, i mentioned that i saw (here actually) that the player can be installed in the center console... he just said it's usually stored in the overhead and kinda danced around it... on an LE isn't it in the console? Is this THAT big of a request?
I understand that the video will cut out when the car is in drive and i saw the thread explaining how to disable that... anyone try that successfully?
thanks alot in advance eveeryone... hope to be a regular here... now all i need is an Armada! haha.
I don't know if it's been done on a non-NAV yet but TVandNav2go (http://www.tvandnav2go.com/) makes devices that might be what you're looking for on a NAV equipped Armada. As for the wiring, there is NO pre-wiring so none if the install is seemless. For your sound, you'll need to use an FM Modulator to broadcast over a dedicated radio station or wire into the ACC jack for it to play over the factory radio.
BlakSpyda 10-07-2008, 11:21 PM Welcome to CA dkocse!
dkocse 10-07-2008, 11:26 PM thanks Spyda... sick Armada... i was checking your pics out last night... unreal.
Thanks pops... is this going to be a huge expense? is this even possible? Ideally, i want DVD on both monitors and able to hear audio thru the speakers. What's the best way to do this? Get the NAV system?
CdnInAz 10-08-2008, 12:34 AM video on the front screen? ... video will cut out when the car is in drive ... how to disable thatDVD on both monitors ... is this going to be a huge expense? ... Depends if you just get a ticket or if you have an accident while watching, prang a car, hurt someone ...
Seriously man, be careful, hell of a lot of weight to point down the road without aiming it.
Audio/video installer at this link gives great points to consider, and quotes an infamous case in Alaska (http://forum.sounddomain.com/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/431964/page/1)
And, of course, welcome to CA.
dkocse 10-08-2008, 01:49 AM I was really asking more out of curiosity... sorry for any confusion. You are right, it's not something to be messed with.
What i was originally asking was "if i hook up a DVD system in the car, in the overhead unit, will it appear on the dash screen at all... meaning when the car is in park and the e-brake is on, will the DVD video appear on that screen or do i need the nav system for that to happen?"

I used Kenwood's carportal to do what your asking. I have a toggle switch that allows me to see the stock information and DVD playback. check out my install, its an 08 SE probably exactly like yours.
The picture didn't come out that well from my digi cam, but it shows the stock screen, and a different shot of a movie.

SKEEZ2V 10-17-2008, 01:25 PM Yes you can watch the DVD up front only if the vehicle is in park and has the E-brake on. Other wise you have to get a relay kit to bypass the E-brake sensor when the car is in motion. I have done this on my 2008 SE and with a flip of a toggle switch you can watch your movies up front. I believe there is a member called tintmasters on here that makes these set ups ready to install with some great instructions to guide you throught the process at a great price. You might want to search for that member name on here and see if he still sells them. Hope this helps

dkocse 10-22-2008, 02:04 PM Thanks for all of the help. I did buy the 08 SE and the first thing i am planning on doing is having the DVD player installed. I definitely want it to play thru the car speakers as well as headphones so i guess i'll have to make that request from the installer to wire it directly.
For those that added an after market DVD to the SE:
What do you hit on the dash to view the DVD player when in park? I don't have a DVD button and am still a little unsure. I just don't want to install the player and not be able to view it on the dash at all.
I'm thinking of having a Nissan dealership install an after-market player to be safe. I just got the car, i don't want anyone to screw it up ya know.
BlakSpyda 10-22-2008, 03:12 PM Go to you local A/V installer and not the dealer for aftermarket installation. You will get a better product and a custom install.
My DVD player sound comes out of the vehicle speaker (2006 SE), but I plug it in to the accessory outlet. The same one I plug my iPod into. Pops, has his wired in to the head unit (2005 LE). Check our galleries.

I just bought my new 08 Armada LE With all the Extras black leather seats everything. But I have ?? for ya. My Armada has the Bose system in it with The 11 or 12 speakers and 6 disc changer on the screen , its nice but. I just traded in my Excursian I had and I have 2 - 12" speakers and a large amp. plus a flip up deck that is also a DVD and TV all in one with the SD slot. Plus I have a large screen that I had put in the roof of the Ex. .
So to get what I was asking what all can I do with this stuff I love the computer screen in the armada now and I have the Dvd thing and all in it already , But for it to be Bose I still like for it to play louder what would you do?????
I was going to sell the deck ,,,,,and keep the flip down screen , and not no what to do with it because the Armada has all the head deals that go all the way to the back you know. The 2 - 12"s and the amp I was going to put in the Armada.
If you change that POS sub out under the driver's seat for a real Sub with Amp, it'll be a HUGE improvement. Tech12volt was working on something for us, hit him up and you won't regret it.

Trickey 10-22-2008, 05:27 PM Thx Pops I will do,,,, LOL I did not know I had a Sub under my drivers seat??????
Yep. I Polyfilled mine and it helped a little but it's still lame. - lol :D
I listened to PHD007's with just an amp and sub added and the difference is incredible. Here's the info on the Polyfil, but I'd strongly suggest the alternative. ;)

dkocse 11-28-2008, 12:27 PM Hey everyone:
i can't tell you how much i appreciate the information! Things seem to be working out pretty well and i plan on writing up my experience as soon as the DVD install is complete. Last question for all of you... and Pops specifically...
Looking at your DVD install pics, you show how you have the center console insert that has the housing for the DVD player. I asked the installer about that and he called Nissan and they told him that the one you have listed wouldn't fit in my car... i don't know if they ever looked for an 08 center console piece but i guess it would be different. Does anyone know what part number that may be... if it exists? i assume the 08 LE's would have that in their console and that would be the same size right? I'm gonna start calling Nissan but i know everyone here seems to be more knowledgeable. Thanks all!
I picked mine up directly from the dealership myself. If you tell them the 04-07 part #'s, they should esily be able to find the 08 ones.
