I keep hearing/reading that all the manufacturers are planning to convert the big SUV assembly lines over for smaller vehicles. Someone posted a comment about Nissan doing that in a thread here, but I can't find it now. Guess we are members of a dying breed, going extinct.

I want to take a guess and say that Nissan might go with something Hybrid since GM is doing it on the large SUV's. But only a guess.

My guess is there is no future for our trucks. I have not seen one single publication that said there is. I'm also curious how the GM / Chrysler merger is affecting the Titan, it could be facing the same fate that we are.

But only a guess.Could be a good guess, would make a lot of sense, but unfortunately probably won't prevail. When I first saw the new Escalade commercial, I thought now that makes sense. "Now this should be a hybrid - oh wait they've done that" and the guy smiles. Savings are usually a percentage of existing - so saving gas on SUVs is more significant than little cars. And the torque gains would be nice :D

likely there is no real future for this type of vehicle. GM will likely keep making Suburbans for quite some time. I doubt that Nissan will redo the Armada/Titan. Given the discussion of the Ram disappearing if GM and Chrysler merge; I see little hope for these vehicles. I have been hoping for quite sometime that all of the mfgs would put diesels into this closed type of SUV. I don't really like pickup trucks, but they will likely become the only option for towing. Since I mostly use mine for towing, I am going to have it for a very long time.:(

The real question would be what will happen to clubarmada? :( I think we will be ported to clubtitan or clubminivan lol

I have a strong feeling that our beast is a dying breed. I have no regrets though, still give me smile when Im driving this baby.

apparently it was announced this week that GM is going to convert next gen Sub and Escalade to the lambda platform. This is used for their CUVs like the Acadia. Great tow vehicle that will be! :crikey:

when the gas prices went up everyone paniced, now that they are falling people will look at big cars again. certain people buy these trucks and regardless of any trendy factors those same people will keep buying them. i live in ct, and love the feeling i get when i see all these little green peace people with there environmentally concious cars trying to get around while the environment is kicking their butt. i drive right on home through rain, snow, ice, feeling comfortable and safe.

^ but gas prices are falling bc of the overall economic malaise....I don't see large SUV sales suddenly spiking.

IMO the entire category will become a niche category w/only a couple of entries. Think 2 seater convertibles. Not every auto maker has one, but several do.

Obviously that sort of market hits the consumer hard b/c there are less choices...but then again- how many of the large SUV owners "really" need them? I can honestly say that we don't. However we made the decision (really the wife wanted it :) that we could justify buying it and deal with the economic ramifications of owning it (ie high gas prices).

I agree with keg97. We will see the available options shrink. I still think these vehicles can be profitable to Nissan if they match production to demand. I think they should also be ready to offer a CNG version as I think that will take off over the next few years. I would love to have a strong towing Armada that I could refuel at my house!

Hopefully Nissan will finally go Hybrid with these beast...I'm hoping. If they do not, that would suck for alot of people. The Pathfinder would be the reigning champ for the Nissan lineup. That would suck too. Another thing, these beast in 20 or thirty years will be scarce, rare, and hard to find...we usually call them collectables. Look at the Datsun 510. Many were produced in the early 70's and late 60's. It evolved into the Nissan Sentra, but is called a 510=collectable. So I would not be suprised that the Armada evolves into a Baby Armada, by another name. I would like to see this beast run strong for a few more years to eventually see a GT-R Armada. That would be sick!

i abosultely agree, we dont really need them, but then again i didnt need my g35 coupe i had, i mean the fastest im supposed to go is 65. i just dont think large suvs should go on the chopping block because of fuel economy. should samsung stop making a 60 '' palsma tv because it uses more electricity than a 19'' tv. and overall i dont think the rise and fall of gas effects sales...i believe people buy what they want.

Interestingly, the Sequioa was one of Toyota's best selling vehicles this month. I don't know if the dropping oil costs had anything to do with this, but I do know that Toyota actually advertises for their large SUV. Nissan needs to do some advertising. The Armada has had what 2 commercials over a 5 year lifespan?! There will always be a market for a vehicle like an Armada. Nissan needs to do some fuel economy advancements on the VK engine, but I still think the Armada/Titan could be successful vehicles for Nissan.

You can always convert your Armada/QX56 to a LP (liquid propane) burning vehicle. Cleaner than gasoline, same power/hp energy. downside? requires LARGE storage tank.

I think the auto manufacturers could keep the Large SUV market alive and invest in smarter powerplant options. I like the idea of cutting off 3 or 4 cylinders while cruising on the hwy. More efficient hybrid technology, or even good ole' fashion Diesel/Biodiesel options.

Anyone for an Armada/Durango??? :thumbdown Would that be a Durmada or Arango??

http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20081022/AUTO01/810220361&imw=Y

As analysts dissect what may be salvageable among Chrysler's assets, they see full-size trucks, complete with their plants and workers, as a potential spin-off.

Included in the package would be the Dodge Durango SUV to replace the Armada. That would dovetail with Nissan product plans as the Japanese automaker plans to stop building the SUVs in Canton, Miss. Production of the QX56 will move to Japan where its replacement will come from a new luxury truck platform shared with the Nissan Patrol SUV, a well-revered off-roader that is popular in other parts of the world.

But the Armada isn't making the same move and its fate remains uncertain. Which raises the possibility of the Durango to the rescue.

It is in keeping with the view among Nissan officials in Japan who have said platform sharing is a good move for Nissan for low-volume vehicles where the amortization costs of a new platform can be largely borne by another automaker.

Say it ain't so!! Sadly though, it is logical. I almost want to see the GM Chrysler merger go through, and in the end, Armada is reborn as a Nissan Surburban!

I think all of this was prior to Nissan passing on Chrysler altogether earlier this week. I guess if GM/Chrysler merge and they sell of the Dodge truck side, Nissan might get back in the mix, but I believe any of the previous Nissan/Chrysler Ram/Titan agreements were shelved the other day as posted on CNN.

i never said it was final w/ the Chrysler build but the Hemi motor isn't a bad engine.... nor is the VK56 that we have. but to stay ahead of the pack it needs more horsepower and torque (which it has plenty). it's hard to say what is in for 2010 or beyond

I disagree. The 5.9 Magnum was biggest POS I've ever owned and the Hemi isn't much better. It's a good motor in it's early life cycle but it cannot be depended on for stable longevity. I'll never buy another Dodge truck or anything that has to do with them again just because I don't really need a diesel and don't want to be rebuilding the engine every 100k miles. I love their V6 motors but their V8's are nothing even close compared to the VK56. Anyone who tells me that a Hemi is as good as my VK56 is telling me that my motor is a POS and I should sell my truck ASAP before something starts to go wrong and i just don't hear any signs of that in this VK56 yet other than the hydraulic lifter tapping becoming more pronounced in the mornings which I understand to be common in V8 motors with hydraulic lifters. When it does come time to sell this truck, I'll be likely looking at Ford and Toyota if a Nissan isn't a Nissan anymore. In the meantime, I hope to still be driving this one until at least 2015.

For whatever it's worth, there was a Car and Driver article from 11/2007(http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/hot_lists/car_shopping/suvs_family_haulers/infiniti_qx56_nissan_armada_to_go_separate_ways_au to_shows) that says that Nissan is going to build a new QX based on the Nissan Patrol. Ot doesn't say when though.

"We're deciding on it now," Igo says, adding that the 2008 refresh buys the QX56 a few more years in its current form.

Of course that was all before this wonderful new economy.

I also recall reading something >>somewhere<< that was talking about 2010 for the change - that was about a year ago too, I don't remember the source though - and can't vouch for its reliability.

Here is the article from Edmunds:
http://blogs.edmunds.com/straightline/2008/04/next-nissan-titan-will-be-built-by-dodge.html

But I also heard there will be no Armada after 2010 model year, from a source. The platform will indeed go to the Patrol and will only be a QX56 replacement. No more Armada. I love my 2006 LE though.
