: BFG All Terrains vs MCH Cross terrain

Alright guys, I need opinions and info.

I'm in the market for new tires and need to know how the All Terrains sound, as far as road noise in cabin goes. I know that the Nittos are also comparable but I am just comparing the two above said tires.

All said and done, BFG All Terrains or MCH Cross Terrains. Pros/cons I want to hear it all.

Thanks

BFG's all the way. I have the 315 70 R17's on my stock wheels and love them. I have had BFG A/Ts on all my trucks since 1994 (3 Dodges) and swear by their tire wear and all around performance in all contitions. This new generation of A/T K/O's is the best. Pullling a 29 ft travel trailer I can air them up and go into whatever the northwoods of WI has to offer. Hope this helps.

Tirerack rates the BFGs higher. They are wider than stock. They aren't made by the French. Sold. :D

Hey Syko thanks for the info.

One last question. Are the noisy onroad? I would think that our mada's huge engines would be louder than any road noise these A/T's might produce. What's your take on this?

Shouldn't be too bad. My Nittos are just as quiet as stock. More quiet than my Bridgestone Pole Positions on my G35 if you are comparing the mada to the G at the same speed with all windows closed.

Why should that bother you? The French own the majority of Nissan!

I know, but that won't stop me from buying the best out there. If there was an SUV that I felt met my needs just as well and the only difference was this, I'd jump ship. ;)

Little road hum, but nothing like Super Swampers. I really don't notice it at all.

Yeah, that's why I bought the Armada. That's also the reason I buy the Michelins! :)

BFG 285-65-18 are rated D, higher than C.
Michelin doesn't list their load rating but they make one that is set up for high loads in 305-50-20.
Nitto Terras are rated d and E and come in 285-60-18 and have higher weights than the Michelins. They don't have a perfect fit for 18s but have good options for 17s and 20s. ;)

Which ones? Here are specs on the Michelin Cross Terrains:

92TripleBlack
07-07-2005, 01:57 AM
2365 max load on the Michelin 265-70-18
3195 max load on the BFG 285-65-18
3195 max load on the Terra grapplers in 305-55-20 and 295-70-17
2601 max load on the Stock Contis and stock goodyears.

I guess it depends on what you're looking for. I wanted quiet, smooth, good handling.
I wanted absolutley no wheel shake at high speeds. No road noise at all, and going 80 feels like 50 used to.

If that's what you want then go Michelin CrossTerrains.

I've only seen posts on this board from 2 people who actually had Mich XTerrains on their Armada. Me and another fellow.

We both had the same reaction. Wow! What a difference!

The Michs are available in the OEM 265/70/R18, but they are hard to find. Your dealer will probably have to get them sent in from another dealer. Don't let them BS you and try to convince you Mich doesn't make this size.

Anyone on this board or anywhere else who has run Cross Terrains won't run anything else. These tires are standard on the big Lexus SUV for a good reason.

If you want a luxury ride and good handling go for this rubber. Costs is around
$900-950 installed with road force balance. Go back a few pages in the general discussion forum and there are at least 2 threads about these tires from me and the other Xterrain aficionado.

Good luck.

I would think that if most of your driving is road and you aren't doing any serious towing or off road, the Michelins are the best choice. The BFG or Terra Grapplers would be a better choice if you wanted more offroad traction or higher load ratings. The Contis and Good years are good for shredding and making asphalt with. :D

I do off-road and tow and occasionally at the same time. High traction to me is secondary to load rating and highway comfort though. Are you guys sure about the "E" rating, that is 10 ply/1 Ton truck territory. I have had 10 ply tires before and you can sit on them off the rim and not deflect them, very stiff!

The Terra Grappler A/T is Nitto's first light truck/sport utility tire to be offered in D- and E- load ratings.

•An aggressive tread pattern with high-density siping provides excellent traction and handling in snow and slush.

•Two steel belts ensure optimum contact patch both on and off the road.

•Two spiral wound nylon cap plies enhance high-speed stability

talked with tire rack...only tire that fits the stock rim is the Cross Terrain. Said the BFG is a more aggressive tire (might tend to be noiser), however its only avail in a 17 and you'd have to get rim to got with it. I guess that makes my decision,,,,,Cross Terrain it is

Incorrect. The BFG is available in 285-65-18. They probably just don't stock the size. It has the same outer diameter as the Michelin. The stock crap contis are much louder than my Nitto A/T tires so I wouldn't worry about the BFG as being too "aggressive" or "loud". Sure they will be moreso than the Michelins, but not vs. stock junk. You will however get better traction in snow and off road. Aggressive tires are Mud Terrains made specifically for off road use.

I just put the BFG AT/KO's (17's) on mine for the cold, dreary, Arizona winters. ;-)
The only vehicle I *don't* have those on is the Camry. :D

They're very quiet compared to the conticraps and ride much better.

Thats strange..here is the link to the 18's

I fancy some of these myself as they are 1.8" bigger in circumfrence and should remove the 5 / 6 mph over read of my speedo.

I have Nitto Terra Grapplers. They don't make a good size 18" but they do have a 295-70-17 that works great. I got 20".

Any pics of the 315's on the stock rims??? Do they rub?? I think that size is the H2 Hummer tire is it not?? The BF Goodrich website says the 315's are for rims at least 8.5 inches and the rim size for the 285's are 7.5inch minimum. Help me out here guys. If the 315's fit and look good, then I'm in....but I'm no tire expert.

Those would rub. They are the H2 size. They are 12.4" wide, and 34.4" tall. Mine are 12" wide and 33.2" tall and mine rub. Width and height both play factors in rubbing. What you want is 295-70-17. This is about as large as you can get on a 17" stock rim and still fit. Those are 33.2" tall and 11.7" wide. (Stock is 10.4" wide and 32.6" tall) Nitto has one in their Terra Grapplers and there are others. ;)

I've got the Cross Terrains, they are absolutely awesome. It's like driving a different vehicle compaired to the Conti Crappers. Very Very quiet, excellent wet weather, and I tow my boat all the time. The wear so far has been really good (only have about 7K on them). Had my first experience in the snow/ice with them this past week, only a few inches of snow, but WAAAAAY better handling than the contis.

I wouldn't consider any other tire for my Mada after having these, I'm sure the BFG's are good also, but I'm not messing with perfection on this.

I just put a set of the Cross Terrains on my Armada and they ride much better than the Conti's. My friend went with the BF all terrains on his Titan and they looked very good on it but they did make a little racket. I wanted a smooth ride and better tread life than the old Conti's. I have the big tow on my truck and its lower gearing was apparent when on the interstate and running in the 80 mph range. I figured I didnt need a tire that was shorter but wider even if it was marginal. I still pull 6k lbs with my Armada but it seldom even see's a dirt road so the grocery getter tires were for me.

I am still shopping for tires! All of your responses (and tire sizing help in another thread - thanks TripleBlack) have been fabulous.

I am leaning hard toward the BFG, mostly because of the significantly higher load rating. I will be running at full weight, going to Mexico on the ugliest road I've ever been on, and possibly doing some sand driving, too. All that points to big, sturdy and tough - which points to the BFGs, I think. There's a new Hummer wearing them (18") in the parking lot here at work. (The thing's rigged out in all black - TB). I've seen the Terra Grapplers in 20" and 17" and they look just awesome - haven't ridden on them so no comment on that.

Y'all have any more thoughts?

I would not put too much stock in anything CR says, certainly as far as anything to do with any kind of automotive products, they are automotive idiots. The Tire Rack has compiled a lot of real world data. http://www.tirerack.com/tires/surveyresults/surveydisplay.jsp?type=ORAT

Look at the Bridgestone REVO, it is rated 2nd overall with over 26 MILLION miles of reported data. How much data do you think CR bases their opinion on?

BTW guess who really makes the top rated tire for Firestone? Clue; they make the REVO also.

Bought 4 new BFG All Terrain KO today. SO far I am happy with the ride / feel of them. It was hard to find them here - all but one shop I talked to had to special order them from out of town. Sam's Club said it would be 3 months to fulfill a back order. Paid about $270 each out the door for them (at the only shop with them in stock) including road hazard, taxes, etc.

Two of the P.O.S. Conti's were already starting to wear out... I am glad to be rid of them.

This is a teaser post, I guess, for a longer one that will have to happen a little later.

Took the BFGs to Baja on 55 miles of the WORST road (and several hundred miles of not-too-much-better roads). We caravaned with a 2004 Explorer with the Cross Terrains - they had two flats (both were stone breaks in the tread) and we had zero. Now... their tires were OEM and probably had less air than mine did. Also, the other driver went a lot faster on the crappy road sections than I did. The "easy" parts of the 55 mile stretch were mostly washboard with some rocky spots. I can't really get the Armada going fast enough to skim the washboard without serious chance of going off the road. Let's just say that I was happy I had invested in the heavier tires.

285-65-18. However, I'd go with the Bridgestone Dueler Revos instead. When this post was first put up, the Revos weren't available in our size. Now that they are, they are a far superior tire to the BFGs in every way.

www.tirerack.com has both in stock. The BFGs are $243 and the Revos in 265-65-18 are $158 each. That means you save $340 and get a better rated tire. They also have a comparison on their site. http://www.tirerack.com/tires/surveyresults/surveydisplay.jsp?type=ORAT
