Just got back from my local dealer. They are insisting Nissan Matic 'S' is the new 'J'.

Anyone got the skinny on this?

Yes it is the new J. In case they don't have the S, The J will work just fine.

I don't have an 09 service manual handy or I would show you. We had the same questions when it first came out.

I just had mine changed and asked the service manager about it. The "S" is "J" with antiwear additives included. If you have a history of "J" (mines a 2007 that has always had "J") they they reinstall "J" and add the new anti wear additives to bring it up to "S" standards. I asked to see the wear additive containers, and the guy then told me that I now had "S" fluid. Evidently there is a history of tranny wear that had to be addressed. Maybe when they went from a 5 to 6 spd tranny. I wish they'ld make up their minds so I can switch to Mobil 1.

Nothing is wrong with the fluids. Either will work fine. The S is replacing the J.

I did a fluid change about a month ago. I dumped the old stuff and added 5+ quarts of Amsoil Synthetic ATF. So far, after an 800+ mile round trip and a couple thousand miles after I've had no issues at all. I'm not into paying their premium prices for what Amsoil brings for $10/quart.

OK - I have never changed tranny fluid in my life - but I want to try. I know I was supposed to buy Nissan J but when I went to Auto Zone the Mobil 1 Synthetic said it was Nissan J and Nissan D and K compatible. I ended up buying 7 qts to make the change. Please let me know if Mobil 1 ATF is OK?

Also - I have read many of the threads but am still a little confused. Do I drain most of the fluid from the plug and then drop the pan? I would think that is the way or you would have fluid everywhere. Can anyone confirm please? Thanks to all!

yes you would have about a gallon of fluid everywhere if you didn't drain from the plug first, and the weight (though only about 8 pounds could bend the pan around the last bolt or 2
