Anybody gotten a program called Alpha Anti-Virus downloaded to their computer? I got it on my laptop, it kept giving me warnings that I had a virus / mal-ware, but wouldn't let me do anything about it. Did a quick Google search, it's a virus itself. Took a while to get rid of it, but finally did. I have no idea how it downloaded itself to the computer (maybe the kids hit something, never know), but if you see it pop up, don't allow it to install. It's nasty!

probably came up in a site that has rotating ads. sometimes rogue ads slip in. it probably popped us as saying "your computer has a virus click here to scan.." or somesuch.. then BAM!
i use adaware and spybot.. both free ad services. they do a great job. i also use zone alarm.. have been for several years....

Yeah, it is malware and can relaunch later. Make sure your antivirus / spyware definitions are up to date and scan weekly.
I've added Microsoft's new AV to my home PCs. It seems to work pretty well for now. I'll go back to using McAfee when this stuff stops working well.

Microsoft Wnidows Defender is a pretty good spyware and malware protectors and it is a free download. for Anti-virus I have Norton 360 at home and use Symantec Endpoint Version 11.0.4014.16 at work.

We have Macafee loaded and supposedly updated on the computer, and I did a scan when I first started getting the popups, and it didn't find anything. I read on the Internet that this program can actually suppress warnings from other virus / spyware protection programs, in addition to preventing itself from being stopped or deleted. But, more than a bit disappointed with Macafee for not stopping this. Tonight when I get home I'm going to spend some time making sure all of the virus files and updates are current; this laptop doesn't get used much, primarily for kid's homework, so it may be behind in its updates.

Keith, there's alot of new viruses out right now that are designed specifically to work around McAfee and Symantec (Norton) products. That Security Essentials I linked above can run alongside McAfee then be uninstalled once you get this resolved.
Just remember there's always a possibility that Startup Files have been infected and might be removed so you might wanna to make sure you have your OS reinstall disc around just in case.

I had that same virus and it a nuisance to get rid of,Mcafee could not clear it I had to use Webroot Spysweeper to get rid of it..You can also try Windows live Onecare free for 90 days it scans for virus and spyware sets up a firewall and also tune up your pc and best of all it's from Microsoft and Live...Good Luck
