: Got smoked by a Diesel

This morning on my way to work; Some fool in an older dodge pickup, pull up next to me at the stop light, and kept launching his truck. I looked over and saw him smile at me, I thought to myself you got to be joking? Can't tell you what year this truck was but it had to be at least 5 -6 years old. A huge exhaust stack coming out through the front of the bed. The light changes and he takes off - so I hit it as well, not real hard, I figured hell it's a diesel, once I realized I was losing on him I stepped into it hard, No chance, all I saw was a huge cloud of black smoke and he was gone. WOW, that thing moved. I tried to catch up to him - no way. Several miles down the road he finally hit traffic and I could gain on him, we both hit the Intersate on ramp, and again a huge burst of black smoke and he simply pulled up the grade and away with ease. Sure would have liked to know what just smoked me. Amazingly quick, is all I can say.

Damn.. I'm sure that engine had some decent work done.. too bad you couldnt catch up at a light and find out what was under the hood.

While the performance is very impressive, I can't stand when those guys blow so much smoke on public roads. It's even more of a hazard than the actual speeding they are doing. Smoke can block driver's views and worse still, cause looky-loos to slow down....creating a chain reaction for nothing.

Building up a diesel to beat an Armada is amazingly easy. But often all that power breaks down their transmissions and/or rearends.

Most diesels are turbo charged these days. My old truck was a mega cab diesel, and I could smoke mustang gt's off the line!! And if you hook one up, they are ridiculously fast...I miss a diesel

I went to a dragstrip awhile back, sponsored by a local company that specializes in diesel performance, and there were many street legal Dodge, Ford, and Chevy diesels running 12's or less all day long. Surprised the hell out of me. One detuned Ram in full race setup ran a 10.8 1/4 mile at 130mph. The second run the motor blew a freeze plug and the truck lost it on slicks and rolled. This was at the 4th annual Fred Owens truck drags.

Needless to say, you got owned, and there are plenty more of us out there who'd bite and get burned too. Since diesels are smog exempt and are plentiful used, many owners a buying them cheaply and modifying them to have a little fun. Doesn't take too many mods to get 500 rear wheel hp, 700 with nitrous, or even a 1000hp if you got some cash to burn.

He probably had a propane tank installed for off the line diesel power launching. I'd love to go diesel too. Probably why I am so infatuated with the Audi Q7 TDI.

Diesel's these days are no joke!

not surprising at all. you figure those diesels are making, stock, upwards of 500lb-ft of torque. you chip it, straight-pipe, cai, and maybe some injectors and you can get 700-800 torque real easy. my buddy had an '01 dodge 2500 that would spin the tires at will in 6th gear, and this was with 37" toyo mud terrains. i think his truck, even being a stick shift, ran a 12 flat in the 1/4.
