: Harmonic Balancer ?
Mikey T 03-16-2010, 12:42 AM I have a 2010 Armada and while I was checking the engine compartment I notice a long brass sleeve with a hex bolt about 1 1/2" long screwed into the harmonic balancer. There are 4 screw holes around the center bolt & the 1 1/2" brass bolt is screwed into one of these holes.I thought those screw holes are to install a pully to remove the harmonic balancer. I'm tempted to remove it just to see if this would stop the vibration I have. Can any of you please check to see if you have this brass sleeve on your harmonic balancer. It sticks right out of the balancer facing the fan.If so does anyone know what this brass sleeve is for? Thanks
Smoke05 03-16-2010, 01:09 AM Take it out and see what happens, what do you have to lose?
kenedytxarmada 03-16-2010, 12:26 PM Mine does not have one. It maybe a like a balance weight?? Looking at the shop manual the bolt is shown in the picture but no description is given....
Just to be clear, you vibration issue is as idle and not while driving???
marctronixx 03-16-2010, 05:13 PM guys, pardon the hijack here, but im ignorant to this gadget. can you tell me where its located on the car? i dont have 4X4 but does that matter?

It's your crankshaft pulley on the front of the engine. It's the large pulley above and a bit to the left of the oil filter if your looking down into the engine compartment.
And mine does not have the bolt with the brass insert.
Mikey T 03-16-2010, 09:49 PM Mine has one too. It maybe a like a balance weight?? Looking at the shop manual the bolt is shown in the picture but no description is given....

No, it vibrates in gear and increases with RPM's while driving.I feel it in the steering wheel, gas pedel, and floor board. Even in the passengers floor board.
kenedytxarmada 03-16-2010, 10:02 PM Mine I notice at 65mph and it get really noticeable around 80. The vibes seem to be coming from more of the center to rear of the vehicle. When I run up to 85, let off the gas and put the truck in neutral, the vibes remain which for me rules out the engine and torque converter.
Have you tried the same?
Mikey T 03-16-2010, 10:31 PM I agree with the vibes coming from the center.I was under the vehicle and my wife put it in gear and gave it gas ( 1,000 rpm's ) with her foot on the brake( of course ) and I felt the vibration on the crossmember under the tranny. I put my hand on the motor mounts and no vibration. If I put it in reverse the vibration is alot worse. What year is yours? Sounds like you might have a dent in your driveshaft or it's not balance properly. My vibration is not that bad when I am cruising at highway speeds. It's when I go from a stand still to 45mph.
kenedytxarmada 03-16-2010, 10:39 PM Yeah, your issue sounds different. My current Armada is an 08'. I am planning on taking mine to a driveshaft shop in San Antonio to have them take a look at it. It's not really that bad. I guess I was spoiled by the smoothness of my 04 Titan and 07 Armada......
kenedytxarmada 03-16-2010, 10:59 PM I would try and get the dealer to hook up an EVA(electronic vibration analyzer) to your truck to see what the come up with. And thats even if they have one. My dealer claims to not have one....... The driveline shop i'm planning on taking my truck has one and it can supposedly pinpoint any vibration causes.
Mikey T 03-16-2010, 11:16 PM Thanks for the info Kenedytxarmada.I went to 2 dealers and they all say that it is the characteristics of the truck. They took another Armada off the lot and it had the same vibration. My 2005 Armada that I traded in did NOT have any vibration at all. Filed a complaint with Nissan Consumer Affairs and they did nothing. They wont even look to see what is causing the vibration. Now I sent a letter to Corporate Office have not heard back from them.It seems like I'm the only one with this brass rod on the harmonic balancer.I like to look at some 2010 on the lot to see if they have it. Thanks again!!
kenedytxarmada 03-16-2010, 11:43 PM Sorry man. It's dissapointing to have such a great vehicle and poor dealer service... My personal experiences with nissan service have motivated me to keep my auto skills up to date, fix what I can and keep my fingers crossed with the rest......
Mikey T 03-18-2010, 06:27 PM Well I brought it to Nissan Service Dept.today and they said it's a balance weight. Some vehicles have them and some don't.Dam, I thought I found the reason for my vibration.Back to square one. :(
