Winds are now toping 175mph. Here's the latest update:
Hurricane Katrina is an extremely dangerous Category 5 storm on the Saffir-Simpson scale. Maximum sustained winds have now been greatly increased to 175 mph. Katrina continues not only grow stronger, but it continues to grow larger. Hurricane-force winds extend 90 miles from the center on the eastern side of Katrina, 75 miles to the northwest and 50 miles to the southwest. The center of Katrina was 225 miles from the mouth of the Mississippi River at 10am CDT, but the hurricane force winds are only 135 miles from the coast.

BTW, this is like a giant category 3 tornado.

NOAA is saying anywhere from 22 - 25 ft storm surge in New Orleans which is already below sea level. They are now under a mandatory evacuation. Katrina is going to be nasty. If anyone is still in New Orleans area, listen to the Mayor and leave. This is not a storm you want to gamble with the lives of yourself or your family. The force of this storm can move SUV's and pick up and hurl cars. They say flying debris will include large appliances and any person hit by any flying debris in this type of storm 'will' die. Notice they didn't say 'may'. This is not a good scenario.

I read somewhere that some "idiot" said that he was in the best physical shape of his life, and could withstand the 175 MPH winds. He chained himself to a lightpole. Experts agreed that he may be in the best shape of his life, but standing in high winds is one thing, recovering from the flying VOLVO that hits you is another!!!
