: Winter tires 2011 QX

I know it's early to be thinking about winter, but trying to avoid the mad rush by consumers when the first snow falls here in Canada. Want to keep my nice 22" rims away from the salt damage, and worried about bringing 6000 lbs of metal to stop safely.

Anyway, I'm told I can downsize to 18" steel rims and use 265/70R18 tires. Anyone have experience doing this? Any problem with onboard computers handling the tire size?

There is the issue of the tire pressure readings. If the pressure is read through the wheel hub I should be fine, but some vehicles have the pressure sensors attached to the valve stem, in which case I'd need the parts from Infiniti. Anyone know the situation with this?

Thanks

Belated welcome Lexx.

The 265/70R18 size it what came on the previous year models. I am sure that they will fit fine.

Welcome to the Club!!
you could get new sensors but they would have to be initialized by the dealer in your new wheels, then when you put the other wheels back on in the spring those would have to be initialized, or just look at the yellow warning lamp during the winter.

Thanks for the welcome.

Talking with tire dealers, they do say that those who change tires and rims each year most often don't bother with the pressure sensor, and go without it for the winter. This isn't specific to Nissan products, but all manufacturers offering sensor capability.

Just so I'm clear, if I go without pressure sensors for the winter tires I'll have to put up with a yellow warning light, but in the spring with the summer tires back on, the warning light will go out without the pressure sensors having to be initialized. Is this correct?

Thanks

If you play with 22" to 18" you might get on to alignment problems

I went with blizzak winter tires (p265/70R 18). They are pretty much a perfect fit "sizewise" with the 22" summer tires I have on my 2011 QX.

Just to clear up a small point, there is no yellow warning light on the 2011 (and I'll assume the 2012 QX) if you do without the pressure sensors. The on-screen info won't dispay anything of course, but no annoying light to deal with.

correct. i always swap to stocks with better tires for the winter, you just gotta deal with the warning light always staying on. and as soon as you put on your other rims in the spring, the sensors work right away again.

the first year i owned it, i think infiniti in vancouver charged me 60 bucks to reprogram the sensor one time to the winter setup, and i thought our onboard computer will store 2 settings like some other car brands (bmw i believe) so i did that, and when it came to the spring and i put back on the aftermarket rims, i asked them why it isn't sensing on the computer? and they said i had to reprogram it again. so i learned my lesson...

Just so we're clear, on the 2011 there is NO warning light with winter tires and NO pressure sensor installed.

Maybe Infiniti was getting complaints from earlier year model owners having to put up with the warning light.

What kind of steel or winter wheels are you guys getting for the Armada?
