For the past few months my truck is making a squealing noise when backing up. I thought it may have been the rear brakes (and they were shot - I will post another thread about that) but it still remains even after the new pads.
I use my parking brake all the time and when I take it off and go into reverse I get this horrid squealing...not sure if it is related.
Any ideas what it could be? When I hit the breaks it stops so I am thinking it is related.
Today it happened when going forward - still coming from the rear of the truck though and now the pads on the front and back have pleanty of meat on them.
Thanks!
Probaably either the calipers or the parking brake not relaxing enough?? I would stat by making sure the pads are still firmly attached to the calipers because sometimes a clip can break and the pad won't pull away from the rotor.

Thanks for the quick reply Pops. The sound survived through a rear pad change so the pads are ok (the old ones had the pins in tact), but the parking brake makes sense.
I forgot, do we have the inside drum on our rear rotors for the parking brake?

yes spta97 we have a rear brake shoe. That was the same problem i had like 2 years ago though. I thought it was the brake pads replaced that and still had the squealing. then did the brake shoes and the sound went away. Good luck.

Just a thought, you did apply a moly lube or similar lube to all slides and pads(anywhere metal touches metal)

That makes a lot of sense. Were yours visably worn? I don't understand how these things wear down unless some yahoo mechanic drove the car with the parking brake on.
Are the shoes a dealer only item? How much?

I did. The only thing I didn't lube that I perhaps should have was where the bolts go into the pins. I didn't want to get lube on the threads (I use blue thread locker) but perhaps I should lube them while I am taking them apart. I did take the slider pins out of the boots and lubed the outside of them though one of the bolts had stuck in the pin (though the pin still moved so not sure if that was an issue).

No its not just a dealer item. I did mine when I was stationed in Guam and I think I got it from Napa. I know not from the dealer. my brake pad came seperated from backing plate a little bit so was causing the pad to squeal.
