I put in a bullet type in that same spot. The piece is hollow fiberglass so it's easy to drill.

I think its an armada camera. Looks stock. The QX would have the chrome for the license plate just above the levers and camera. ;)

Not that easy but I'm sure it can be done. They had them in the QX56 for '04. Probably cost more than you want to pay though and aftermarket is probably much cheaper.

It looks a little rough around the edges because it is. I had to cut the camera out of a license plate frame. I bought the plate camera with plans of using it on the bumper but with our step bumpers it doesn't work....by the time I paid for shipping and restocking fees I would of lost $75 so I decided to cut it out. It actually doesn't look bad and no one I've shown it to has made mention of the edges, typically I get a "it looks like it came with the car" and a "you have bigger balls than I to take a drill to a $40k car" :)

I used to install car stereos. Drilling into cars can be fun. I was the guy they always called when they needed to holesaw a door panel on a mercedes, or drill in an antenna, etc. I saw two screwups in 3 years. Figure 8 cars a day, 6 days a week, that isn't bad. One was me, the other another guy. I put in a self tapping screw that was 1/8" longer than I thought. Ended up punching a hole into the gas tank of a merc. flooding the trunk with gas.
I also saw another guy hit a brake line in the dash of a jag with a screw. Other than that, pretty uneventful. ;)

Now why would you buy an aftermarket camera that will cost much more than an oem camera?

Aftermarket license plate camera cost is 249$ with drilling
http://www.burtmanindustries.com/zoomprod.php?id=rev_cam_plate

Oem camera cost is 61.2$ that will integrate into your new truck beautifully
http://www.trademotion.com/partlocator/index.cfm?action=getLocator&siteid=55&chapter=ARF3630&appSectionid=4486&groupid=51895&subgroupid=3278&componentid=69558&make=25&model=Armada&year=2005&catalogid=2

Beside the huge price difference you don't need drilling.

About wiring the OEM Camera I'm :clueless: and if anyone has an idea about it their explanation is appreciated.

For one it wasn't an option at the time I did mine and two there is something wrong/missing with that price list. There is no way that the camera only cost $1.05. That's the price difference shown between the with and without camera. I will bet the camera is a minimum $400 to buy???? could be wrong but I doubt it.

Look at a 05 or 06 service manual wiring diagram and you should be able to figure out what would be involved. It all depends on what you have, Nav etc. My guess it will be easier and less expensive to go aftermarket.

The license plate camera DOES NOT FIT the armada. I know for a fact as I bought one (not from Burtmans) when I started my project. The plate cameras are made to be installed on a bumper or hatch that has a "roof" over the plate. Since we have step bumpers the plate will stick out too far at the top, plus it is taller than our bumpers....plus if I remember correctly there is not a hole in the bumper directly behind the camera to run the wires through.

Wow,

That doesnt look good at all. Kinda horrible. I think burtmans needs to remove that from their postings. That looks like a Pep Boys special.

yeah u can get that oem camera housing, the dealers are getting it in at 70bucks including tax. I got lucky on a one time order through the salesman (camera housing, handle, window lever, and factory color is one piece.)

hope this helps anybody.

I checked out the link given for the OEM Rear View Camera, and called them. The guy I spoke to said the Camera housing was $73.44 and it comes without color. He said the Camera itself was $305.56. He wasn't sure if it would work on '05 Armada SE even though I told him I Had Clarion GPS installed and it had a provision for rear view camera. He said I might need a camera controller which costed $260.25. Please what are your view about this project of installing a camera to the Clarion N.I.C.E. system?

The easiest way is the way I did mine. 2nd option I'd get the factory handle and try to add a aftermarket camera to it. I haven't seen the factory one personally so I don't know what features it might have that require a controller, but for $300 I wouldn't bother with it.

Eugene,
Everything you just said is correct. I just had that same conversation with my parts guy, and got him to order the housing for me. I also ordered the xovison camera that Gumble ordered from Fry's electronics for $60. I'm already scheduled for a trip to the paint shop so no problem getting the housing shot. Now the only question is will it fit. I also found another camera for $116 for plan B.

But I hope plan A will work. I see many of us are in persuit of the same thing; so whoever gets there first share the wealth.

cough cough... iim bumping this thread back up.

i have the factory handle with the camera housing all ready and painted. before i tear into the back door id like to ask others who have installed a camera either with the OEM housing or just drilled a hole in the fiberglass... how deep is it back behind the handle in the door?the back of the handle is open but i need to know how tight it is back behind it. also the OEM ghandle does not have a plastic piece over the opening which meansi would eithe rhave to find a pastic piece to cover the opening where the camerra is looking out or caulk around the camera so its water tight to prevent water form splashing in.. any opinions on which way would be great. i i dont know who could fab a piece os clear plastic to go over the hole.. does anyone?
i can post a photo of the handle if anyone needs to see it.... just ask...

oops, apologies. didnt see this reply.

ok, snapped a few photos.. if anyone needs to see anything up close, let me know. the paint is spot on, right down to the flakes in the paint! perfect. had one of the local nissan dealers that i purchased it from do the paint job. took less than a day.

id really like to get the OEM camersa but the best price i have seen is 360 bux. i dont think you really need the controller since the N.I.C.E. has provision for the camera on it. the very least you would have to clip the end of the camera port that attaches to the controller and figure out the pin outs.. but i think ill try the ebay way and grab one of those small cameras. but would appreciate a response from anyone who has opened the back up...

Thank you for taking the time to take the pictures, really appreciate that, Now, a couple questions and a comment, how much did you have to pay for the part and the paint? and I was wondering why it came without the plastic cover? am gonna try to check with my dealer to be sure if it does not come with the plastic, and if you are gonna try to caulk around it, you are better off just drill a hole in your existing part like many have done here, and sill look clean.

RIGHT! i was thinking to just do the drilling. ya know im not sure a plastic cover comes with the unit. the posts of the OEM camera at trhe top of this thread does not seem tro have a plastic overlay in front of it.. only the camera eye. it seems to be tucked in well. the paint was 90 bux and the part was $146 i believe. i may end up grabbing the OEM camera because i have invested money in going that route... ill let the masses know about this...
