: Cool cell phone application
llajumpvid 11-09-2005, 07:54 PM http://www.google.com/glm/index.html You can now get an app directly from google that gives you google maps on your cell phone. If you have a web capable phone....I have Sprint Vision so it's free. Very cool and handy for those times in a rental car and out of town.
I've been learning a lot lately from sprintusers.com. There is a ton of things you can do with the newer phones that I never knew possible. I've got it so I can access videos, mp3's, and photos on my home computer from anywhere that I have sprint cell service. This is great for when your stuck on a long layover in a lame airport.
My phone is a LG535 and I have a minisd in it with a bunch of mp3's so once I go through all of the songs on there I can listen to the remainer on my home pc. I bought a sanyo 9000 for the wife.. much nicer phone but it was an anniversary gift so I couldn't bring myself to give her mine and take the new one for myself. Anyway the Sanyo is evdo which is like comparing dialup to DSL.
There are a bunch of different monthly services that you can buy like gps navigation, live tv, even sirius provides like 20 stations.
adjmcloon 11-09-2005, 08:23 PM The new smartphones are so damn cool. Personally I'm waiting for the new Palm 700 Treo's that are coming out. Currently they switched over to Windows Mobile, but rumor is there's a Palm version coming out in May next year. Do you have Mobi-TV?
How do you like the 535 Lonnie? Sounds like you've got a neat setup. I saw on one of the Titan forums someone installed a bluetooth adapter in their truck which opens up a lot of doors.
I like Sprintusers.com, but honestly I'm thinking of switching to Verizon when my contract ends in March next year. Check out www.engadget.com and www.treocentral.com for lots more to read. :D
llajumpvid 11-09-2005, 09:13 PM I like the 535 but like all tech things its 5 months old and already out of date. The sanyo 9000 is a nicer phone, high speed web access and a larger screen.
I haven't really looked into bluetooth so I don't know what I'm missing yet.
I tried out MobiTV on my Treo 650. It's bad. So much for TV on my cell phone.
I too am waiting for the 700 but being Windows based, I'm wondering if this will freeze up daily and crash.
The nice thing is the 700 will have a Palm app all so us Palm users can stay with it.
adjmcloon 11-10-2005, 09:16 AM Yeah, I can't wait for the 700 with the next-gen Palm OS. I've had Palm PDA's since the Pilot came out. I do all my banking online, and I use my PDA to enter my transactions and then sync everything to my computer. It's also handy for mp3's, games, etc. I have an app that I track mileage with, etc. Very useful!
I've been patiently waiting for the "perfect" convergence device. I hear tell the new 700p (which is supposed to be the Palmos version) will have at least a 1.3 megapixel camera, EV-DO, wi-fi (hopefully), etc. It's looking like with the addition of a 4 or 6 gb card that we could also get decent mp3 capability as well as the ability to watch movies, etc.
I imagine Mobi-TV would work great once they start rolling out EV-DO and we can get some better bandwidth to the phones.
baseballfanz 11-10-2005, 09:50 AM You guys are going to make me broke, I have not put any though into a new cell phone for awhile and now you guys got me thinking. I'm happy with my Sony Ericsson P900 for now.
Couple of good sites for cell phones info.

www.mobile9.com (for themes and stuffs)

I've got the 650 now and the camera is pretty bad. But I guess it's a phone first. My issue with MobiTV is that it's not real time. The shows are all pre-recorded. Even the news is not live. Also, none of the 40+ channels are based around here. I sit next to my TV and compare FOX, NBC, CBS, ESPN, etc and none of it matched whats really on TV.
700p sounds like what I'll be going to next. I wish they would make this phone a flip though. I have to get a huge leather cover to protect the screen, camera lens, and keyboard.
I do love the qwerty keyboard though. I could never get the graffiti down as good as typing on this little qwerty keyboard.
adjmcloon 11-10-2005, 12:33 PM How does the 650 work as a phone? I've heard good and bad. I currently have Sprint here in southeast Texas and hate it. Verizon has the best coverage bar none, but they're more expensive. I'm a little torn because when I get the Treo obviously I'll have to have a data package, but the Verizon one is like $40/month vs. $15 for Sprint's Vision package.
Speaking of cases, the Vaja is definitely going to be the one. Have you seen them? Very low profile and they're beautifully made. Check it:

I haven't had any experience with Mobi-Tv- sorry to hear it's sucking. Do you have EV-DO yet where you live? It's only in select sections of Houston near me, which is too far. :(

You've nailed it on the head. This is where I'm starting to get fed up convergence. The Treo 650 CDMA for Verizon is an all digital phone. Many of the other Verizon phones are tri-band which includes analog band. The 650 has very poor reception and many of the people I talk to on a daily basis noticed it right away. My older Kyocera 7135 was a Tri-band phone that had great reception everywhere. Now I don't with 650.
I'm not exactly clear what EVDO is. I think its Verizon's Broadband Access plan that is 300-500kbps with 2Mbps bursts. This is offered where I am but you need a PCMCIA card plugged into Laptop to use it. The Treo650 itself can only use the NationalAccess plan that is 50-70kbps or somewhere around there.
Anyway, I have to basically wait for one of the carriers to add some cell sites around where I am, then I'll go sign up with them.
BRE Armada 11-10-2005, 05:56 PM I really like my 650 (oh and I have the Vaja case) it is a great case but be sure that you get one where the front is black (I got red and it looks worn after 6 months of use).
I have great reception and hardly if ever miss a call with Verizon service.
The reception issue all depends on location. I live in the hills so I'm stuck with only Verizon. Everyone else has "no service" here.
Even though I ***** about my 650, it is a great phone. Now when ever the wife is shopping, I just hang out in the corner and surf the web, check emails, and watch movies.
Can't wait for the 700p to come out. That phone should be awesome!
aznwrr 11-12-2005, 06:42 PM The Nextel side of Sprint has a subscription called Telenav. Work like a nav system but can get expensive if you use it a lot. If you use a newer Blackberry with Nextel it is $10 unlimited usage for this add on.
