The other day in NY we got hit with some snow an so I was able to use the 4wd for the first time but when I slipped over some snow and went to brake there was a horrible crunching sound that chilled my spine. What happened someone please help. This is my first suv and I just want to know if that sound was the norm.

The sound was normal. It was the VDC/ABS/ABLS working to keep you from skidding.

If I upgrade on the brakes would this still be present.

Yes, mine do it even on wet pavement...if its a fairly quick stop. It's the abs grabbing and releasing, completely normal even though it does sound like something is about to break or is it brake:)

Yes.
1. The brakes don't need upgrading if you have the new rotors and pads from Nissan.
2. It won't matter what brakes you have. The system engauges them automatically to stop you from doing involuntary donuts, which is the noise you hear. It isn't the brakes, its the auto engauge and the power transfer. it is normal and means the system is working. If you read the VDC, TCS, ABLS, etc. sections of the manual, they all talk about hearing these noises as normal. ;)

Hopefully, you won't hear it much. If you do, you are in a situation that you don't want to be in and the system is working to keep you safe. ;)

I'd rather hear that crunching sound, than the crunching sound as I slide into something!!!
