: Stereo additions
blairc 01-01-2006, 02:26 AM Finally got pics of the stereo additions I had done a couple months ago. Added a JL Audio 12-inch (W3v2) sub and Total Mobile Audio 340 watt 1-channel amp. The install was done by Pierson's Car Stereo in Livermore CA, equipment was purchased there too. May upgrade existing speakers & add an amp for them too so they can keep up with the sub/amp.
The sub does a good job of shakin the 'Mada - can get it loud enough that my ears hurt & you can feel the pressure, but don't do that very often or for very long. Sounds good with all types of music, and I listen to everything but classical & country.
As always, you can visit my personal website to see / read more: Blair's Armada Page (http://www.blairc.com/Armada/armada.htm)

Looks good man!! Wish I could hear that JL thump!! Might go that route myself. My Eclipse just doesn't hit like I want it too and my OBCON box is way to big!! Nice clean install by the shop!!
blairc 01-01-2006, 03:25 PM No idea why this post ended up in this forum, it should've been in the Interior Mods forum....oops! :duh: :comphead:

Hard to get a good look at your box in the pic in your sig, but yeah, it looks like it's pretty honkin' big. It looks like it's a ported box, and ported boxes tend to be larger. My box is a sealed enclosure.

Looks nice, but why didn't you get the Armada specific stealth box from JL? You should also get some 12 gauge monster cable for the sub. That wire looks like 14 gauge.

C'mon Triple he doesn't need any wire bigger than what he has for 340 watts..... :damn:

That's just "old salt" from a previous installer "Bigger is always better!" :)

I am an installer as well. Bigger is always better but not necessary....the difference in the resistance of the 2 wires is minimal....talking about maybe a 3 watt difference and a sound difference of maybe 0.05 DB's...not even close to an audible difference.

Just old school I guess. The difference is minimal if the distance is short. It grows the longer the wire. ;)

Really wanted the Stealthbox, but it was more than 2x the price of the woofer & box I got. Add in the fact that you should get a bigger amp to drive it, since it contains a W6 woofer vs. the W3 I got, and that adds another $200 to the total price. Overall, the difference was $800 for what I got vs. $1,300 for the Stealthbox setup. That's $500 I can use elsewhere - New grill from dmoore on eBay, an aftermarket GPS, amp & speakers to upgrade the ones in the doors, getaway weekend with the wife, put it in the savings account...lots of options for someone who doesn't have unlimited funds.
Add in the fact that no shop has a Stealthbox of any kind in stock (they're custom order) so you can't do any kind of pre-purchase/install audition. Add in the fact that installing the Stalthbox requires permanent modification of the vehicle (in case I don't like it, and want to take it out), and I went with the setup I have.
As for the speaker wire, I'm not sure what guage it is, but I trust the shop that did the install to get things like that right. I've had other good stereo installs in the past, & never used anything bigger. The sub sits directly over the amp, so I'm not running a long speaker wire, and as you pointed out, the shorter the wire, the less of a difference it makes. I don't believe it's a choking point in this particular install.
LafayetteOwner 11-06-2008, 08:59 AM I saw a picture the other day on the forum but can't find it now. Someone on the forum had built a custom sub woofer box and installed it in the rear side kick panel compartment thing (I'm sure it has an official name). Anyway, I can't find it and would like to find out more about building that custom install.
I've got all sorts of boxes, subs and amps from previous vehicles, but need something new for the Armada.
Thanks,
Chris

That would be Paspasero.

Thank you! That's exactly what I was looking for. Not sure why my search terms didn't locate that post.
BlakSpyda 11-06-2008, 10:10 AM I knew who you were looking for :2cool:
There is another member who did it, but I couldn't remember his name right off. Paspasero was the only one who documented his install.

Looks good! I love JL's. I have the tripple 10" powerwedge in my mada. JL's just deliver the goods in my opinion.
