: Need some opinions on some 22's
wackdogg 01-22-2006, 03:58 AM I have already decided that I am going to stick with a Nissan Armada no matter what....either a 2006 or Nissan can fix my brakes on my 05 and I will take that back. With that being said I wanted to get your opinions on the rims I have been looking at...obviously I got my favorite picked out already but I want to make the right decision the first time and not think what could have been..Here are the pics. Post which ones you like the best.

Casino, sorry to break itto you, but as I've been saying, this is the view of the vast majority of the public. It isn't personal. He wasn't attacking you. Lighten up. He was just letting you know that lots of people look at "Dubs" as rap crap, especially on a vehicle designed to be able to be used for occasional off road duty. Being a military guy, I thought you'd have a similar view. Regardless, wouldn't you rather know that most people look down on them than live in a fairytale?
At least you won't loose too much functionality with 22s. It will be slower and use more gas, but it will handle better and probably ride better than stock. I like 1 and 3 and 4. 2 would be way at the bottom and one of my last choices. Looks like a lot of wheels I see that just go for too much. In the end, they look like pie pans that have had a couple holes punched in them by juice can openers. At least the other 3 have some style to them. If you had to pin me down, I'd go in order 4, 3, 1, 2.

Didn't we already agree to disagree on this fact. And thanks for another stereotype about "military guys." Again I don't fit the mold I'm a Liberal. No, I didn't think he was attacking me I just don't equate chrome wheels with lifestyle choice. Look at Foose and Boyd, don't think you will catch them at the local hip hop club anytime soon but they make some of the hottest rims and rides out there. IMO its not necessary to belittle or insult a culture just to make a point. I'm glad you feel that a "vast majority of the public feels the same way" but I've yet to see the results of that survey. As for "Rap Crap" there's another term I could do with out. I don't need to lighten up for stuff like this. I've been on this board almost as long as you and I think I deserve the same respect I show you. Sorry to post jump but it gets old seeing guys get jumped everytime they post something the other half doesn't like. Anyway back to biz!

But they don't put those wheels on SUVs or Trucks. They put them on classic muscle cars. Rigs never designed to go off road. They also don't go 26", sticking to 20s and 22s.
As for "culture", I don't consider one that demeans women, promotes single parenthood/teen mothers, drug dealing, violence, bragging, and money as something that should be protected. As Bill Cosby would say, I've never seen anything that enables and promotes people to lower themselves more, dooming many to a bleak future. Plenty of white kids following suit. It isn't a race thing, its a junk culture phenom which is and has been for sometime unrelated to race. Too bad that "postive" rap role models like Will Smith are in such short supply and junk like 50 cent and Eminem are the norm.
Sorry to "jump" you. Though I'm the other side of the coin, Liberal is still a respectable view, but from working in Newark for 10 years, rap and its culture is something I just hold in complete contempt.
And again, don't worry, it isn't race. I also hate 60s hippie freaks and their long haired druggie liberal protesting socialist agenda.
You're a movie buff James. Remember in Hamburger Hill, where Motown is explaining to Doc why you shouldn't say F this and F that. I smile at my Mamma. Great meal, Ma. Would you please pass the f***ing potatoes. The ham is f***ing A, Ma. You don't know how... how f***ing great it is to be home. How you going to act, huh? It does matter. It isn't just harmess music if that's all you know and the values espoused in the songs are what you end up looking up to or are the only values you know. Terrorists are terrorists because its the only view they've been exposed to growing up, so they think its the right thing to do.
If you go to a job interview and greet the interviewer with Yo, wus up! instead of Nice to meet you sir/mam, and then you AXE for the job, where to you think you'll end up? Now extrapolate that over a lifetime. Finally got my nieces and nephews to stop axeing everone. It was turning into a bloody mess. :comphead:
FL_Crushin 01-22-2006, 01:14 PM I plan to get 22's for my ride as well, but I don't REALLY like any of the ones you selected. But since they are your favorites, I will give my selections. I would go with #1, then #4. I wouldn't put the other two on the ride if I were forced at gunpoint. They are way to 'gaudy' no real style, just chrome and curves.

I thought that the car was designed to drive??? If you want to take your ride off road and scratch the **** out of it that is your perogative....that's not me. The only 4 wheel driving that my Mada will ever see is if I drive through some inclimate weather....

Actually #3 used to be my favorite until I saw someone rollin around the city with them and got a chance to check them out up close. I don't really like how the spokes go all the way out to the edge of the wheel. It gives an illusion of a bigger wheel but it also makes it look like the rim doesn't have any chrome lip....I love wheels with big chrome lips on them...My favorite's in order though would have to be #1,#3,#2,#4.

Amen brother.....I am in the military as well and my choice of music that I listen to has nothing to do with the rims that I like....I would actually buy 24's if I didn't think that the ride would suffer and also 24's cost like $2000 for 4 tire vs like $800-$1000 for 22 inch tires....$2000 for 4 tires ever 2 years or so doesn't excite me.

That's TB for at least being subjective in the matter a little bit.....even though I don't agree with you that most of the general public looks down upon big rims and nice cars. I like cars and trucks period. Lowered or raised up I don't give a crap.....as long as your ride looks nice to you, that is all that matters.

Huge rims on Trucks/SUVs, yes. Super large rims on cars, yes. Slightly larger rims, no. Nice cars or trucks, certainly not. There is a point where you go from classy, nice, to cheesy excessive. Kinda like a nice gold chain to Mr T. Sometimes more isn't better. ;)

Ha Ha I will agree with you.....that looks like crap with the rims that big....Honestly the biggest that I would ever go is 24's unless it was on like a Hummer H2 or an Excursion....then 26's would be alright...but I will agree with you that huge wheels can look cheesy on certain cars....my neighbor has like an 1994 or so caprice with 23's on it and it looks horrible...like a monster truck but if it makes him happy and he likes it who am I to judge.....
wackdogg 01-22-2006, 04:13 PM This is kind of what his caprice looks like

By the was Chip Foose drives an Escalade on 26's and his wife drives a ML55 on 22's. I have seen him many times driving around locally and filming the TV show, Overhaulin......

Well neither of those cars were designed and engineered for offroad use.
ockevin 01-22-2006, 08:13 PM The escalade comes mostly in 4wd. Not meant for offroad as much as an Armada....

Sad isn't it. All SUVs are designed for off road use. Just some better than others. ;)

If you take a poll on all those that OWN an SUV and ask them how many of them actually take their rides OFF ROAD the numbers will be low very low. Not taking sides but just adding an opinion.
BTW I work on a Military Post and there is a Black Chrysler 300M with AFT MKT 20's on it and dark tint. From what I can see the owner is Caucasion and in his mid 40's. Beleive it or not but the Bling is chosen by whoever whenever. They don't like having a car that looks like everyone elses.
So nuff said.
As for the rims Personaly If those were my only choices then 1 would be it.
Take a look at this. http://www.victoriatire.com

Nav400 01-23-2006, 07:02 PM I went with a pretty simple design. Some of the ones suggested are pretty intricate and may be a real bear to clean on a regular basis. After you put wheels on you will find that 22's don't look that big in comparison to 22's on other SUV's. With the 305/45's I have on my vehicle I sm still satisfied that there is enough sidewall their to keep the integrity of the tire/vehicle in case of pot holes/curbs, etc...
Ignore the other banter; those that disagree with larger wheels pop up in every post telling everyone else what they think is best for their rig. Personally, I don't see the Armada as a serious off-road machine, its a large SUV that has some off-road capabilities...Its so fricken wide you couldn't take it in many off-road areas in the NW without the introducion of door to tree, plus the limited ground clearance, side steps, phew.
Anyways here is mine on 22's to contrast against the 24's previously posted in this thread with the Foose wheels (which I think look great, I can't believe how "small" they look on the Armada for 24's). In the end, get what you like the most --- you'll always second guess wheels anyways wondering what this or that design would look like on your rig even after you've installed your choice.
ockevin 01-23-2006, 09:26 PM Nav400,
Well put....You have a nice Armada...
It is amazing how small wheels look on the Armada. I get this all the time ? Hey , nice 22's....LOL....The beast makes everything look small.

Tmation 01-24-2006, 07:48 AM I have been looking for some 22" rims and tires but can't find any I like. Most wheels have those fake split rim bolt heads (WHY??), which I dont want as they are a pain to clean. I want smooth spokes and a center cap (easier to clean than wheel nuts) but the few I have seen are old fashioned looking.
Anyone got any Ideas? (done the tire rack search...no luck there :( )

They have those to give the impression that it is still a serious off road machine. Its a style. Not sure why you'd do that either.
Here's some wheels on Discounttire. They are their house brand so they aren't available elsewhere and may give you some more options.
http://www.discounttire.com/dtcs/refineWheelsViewAllBrnd.do?rcz=32835&rc=FLOINT&typ=Truck&sortOrder=Model&mf=MB+Wheels
Last, get a polymer wheel wax. This will help your wheels shed brake dust and makes cleaning much easier. ;)

O,man your right, terrible offroad vehicle, of course. Thats probably why motortrend took it to death Valley, and the Rubicon trail. Where it performed great and kept up with the jeep and Lr3 up every hill, stream, and log.
92TripleBlack 01-24-2006, 12:15 PM You're both right. Just depends on the terrain. In deep swampy stuff, or in tight rocks, etc. a jeep is what you need. If there is space for a full size and you aren't going into water over 20" deep, we'd do fine. Next to the smaller, and thus advantaged Sequoia, the Armada/QX is the most capable full size for Off road, moreso than the big 3s offerings for sure, and better than the vast majority of midsze SUVs as well such as the Highlander, Rav4, Passport, Explorer, liberty, etc.
BostonBob 01-24-2006, 06:25 PM I am a "cracker" from Boston who thinks those Foose Spank6 that OCKevin rides are the sharpest thing on this website. I agree they do not look like 24s at all. I think he is in CA so the roads are far better than out here so he can get away with it. I have 20" chromes that really make my truck stand out (IMO) but I know they deteriorate the ride some. I just switched over to my factory LE wheels and it looks so bland I cringe every time I look at it. I do notice that the factory wheels do absorb the potholes a little better. No big jump in gas mileage yet. On a personal note, I am former military and do not particularly like rap music. Although I do appreciate some songs from both Eminem and 50 cent. We all have our likes and dislikes. I was going to say that I wish people could just answer the original question and not spew out their own philospohies. But I just realized that might be boring.
Sample - do you like my rims? all replies either 'yes' or 'no'.
At least with the prejudicial banter we have more to talk about and isn't that what this site is all about? Feel free to discuss....... :chainsaw:
SilverQShip 01-25-2006, 12:15 AM They said the qx56 barely made it up the hills, the jeep barely, and lr3 very well. It was probably the tires that held the car back. There have been a few qx56 owners who took their cars through "30 of water and one of them had water come up to his hood. Both their trucks r running great still.
I feel guilty not showin this truck some mud and ruts, I feel like I'm wasting it.

The LR3 has more off road capability designed into it. Jeep took the GC away from Off road more this year to try to have a softer ride that would appeal to the soccer mom crowd. Kinda like the T bird. They went from a 2 seater to a 4 seater. Sold a lot more cars, but killed the Icon that brought people in to begin with. A Wrangler Rubicon would kick the LR3s butt all day long off road however so I guess they feel they still offer an off road option. As for the test, our vehicle doesn't compete with the Jeep or LR3. Its competition is the GM Tahoe derivations, the Ford Expedtion, etc. Among those, it would stand far above for off road capability.
And finally, I wasn't using the thread to bring up "prejudical comments". I wanted the inquirer to know that just like owning a vette, Harley, or other statement vehicle, etc., large wheels carry some prejudiical baggage with them. Don't stick your head in the sand and pretend you are in utopia and it doesn't exist. You're more open to getting keyed, victimized by road rage, judged unfairly, tickets, etc.
BRE Armada 01-26-2006, 04:53 PM Hey Bob,
the roads out here are pretty good, and we dont get weather like you guys do on the right coast....so 22's or 24's for a street car are a lifestyle choice. I tow, so 24's were not an option. I have no issues with 22's towing my race car.

GasDoc 01-26-2006, 07:12 PM Hey Armada gang:
I am picking up some Helo Skid Chrome 22 x 9.5 inch rims with some Nitto 305/45/22. I contacted the manufacturer and like the majority of wheels for our beast, they are all lugcentric. I don't think anyone makes a hubcentric rim for our SUV. What that means is that the load and torque on the wheel is carried by the lug nuts entirely!!!
This was a major issue in my previous SUV, a VW TOUAREG where Discount tire didn't know better and installed some 20 inch TSW without hubcentric rims. The ride was fine except vibrations became intolerable over 70mph.
Does anyone with aftermarket wheels feel this is an issue with the beast? Any vibrations over 70mph? The question is should we order hubcentric rims so that our wheels are perfectly centered on the axle?
any input would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance y'all..........

Our pattern matches the tahoe. I don't have vibe problems with Lugcentric wheels.

I could not agree with this statement more.
Also, what works on your car also depends on where you live. In LA (CA) 5 years ago, if you rimed out your SUV it WAS rap. Now it's a lot more common place in suburbs. I live in Scottsdale AZ and A LOT of soccer moms roll 22s and 24s on Tahoes, Hummers and of course, Escalades. You don't even notice anymore.
Get whatever rims you want and do it with taste.

But it is inevitable. First some do it because its differnent. Then others do it because they think what the first group did is cool. Then it takes off and pretty much everyone does it for a time. Finally, people generally realize there is no reason for it and it costs a lot just for "the look" so it goes out of favor. Same with spinners, body kits, etc. Just a matter of time before its uncool and everyone will be wondering why they spent so much money for a harsh ride.

Nice wheels! I just ordered a set of number 1's on Thursday. They should be here tommorow.
wackdogg 02-12-2006, 05:27 PM NO! no, no, no!
Yes, yes, yes, YES!!! :machinegu
BlakSpyda 03-03-2006, 03:18 PM TripleBlack stated.............But they don't put those wheels on SUVs or Trucks. They put them on classic muscle cars. Rigs never designed to go off road.

There is an old saying; “A person will never know how ignorant you are until you open your mouth”.
I will attempt to remove “race” from the topic, hard as it may be being that only one person (Eminem) that isn’t black has truly been successful in the hip hop industry. (Beastie Boys notwithstanding)
For the record, I have never known of any rap artist or song that promotes single parenting, or trying to influence listeners to sell drugs. The very notion is preposterous! For the record Bill Cosby speaks as much for the Black community as much as Bill Clinton speaks for the white community. As far as flaunting a debauched life filled w/drugs, jail time, and sexual depravity; Lindsey Lohan, Brittany Spears, Paris Hilton, Amy Winehouse and 16 year old Jamie Lynn Spears are poster children for the behavior/culture that so offends you. So at this point one would assume that we now group the entire “thespian culture” as detrimental to society. You seem to hold Will Smith in high regard and I would agree. Let me explain how and why he is where he is today. He comes from a mother that was an educator, a powerful father that was the head of his household. Generally that type of upbringing has a successful outcome. Some rap artist are products of their environment and some are simply part of an environment where they “create” themselves as a product.
I am not a fan of the saggy jeans, big chains and hats turned back, neither am I a fan of the goth, grunge, or totally un-kept look that seems so prevalent today. That generally happens at 39. I had different looks at 17 my parents didn’t like and I think I have turned out well. For the record…I loved RunDMC, Whodini, LL Cool J, Public Enemy, EPMD etc. You are only a year older than me, so not unless you hated rap even at that age, the names listed above should not be foreign to you.
Hip Hop or Rap and it’s artist are no more corrosive to society than Keith Richards and the Rolling Stones, Ozzy Osbourne, Motley Crue, Mettalica just to name a few. From this few mentioned just mentioned rabid drug use, illegitimate offspring, murder and other acts of violence have been associated with them, yet I find it amazing that the above acts and the ones mentioned from the onset are CELEBRATED, yes CELEBRATED! Brittany Spears commands as much airtime as John McCain and Mike Huckabee!! Rap music has nothing to do with your nieces and nephews being unable to pronounce simple words in the English language.
In closing I am sure if someone interviewed with me and “axed” for the job…they would not get it! Just as the one that says “this job is like totally hot” or “your office rocks” would be out of job. My point is none of scenario’s just mentioned are obviously suited for the business environment.
nyc2005armada 02-12-2008, 11:54 PM ROXX, I totally agree with what you wrote. How kids these days act, dress, speak, eat, what type of clothes they wear, or music they listen to is a fad. We all went through it.
So for someone to sit there and try to blame on an entire ethnic culture or say that rap music promotes single parents, drug dealing, or anything that society deems wrong, is not only wrong, but ignorant.
In every culture there is teen pregnancy, single parenting, drug dealing, bragging, and violence. Do you think that inner city ghettos are the only ones that are affected by this. Corporate america is guilty of it as well. Do rich people have to have the designer cloths, the expensive homes, luxury cars, and flaunt it on the other part of society that is less fortunate? No, but they do. Do big clothing companies have to design there clothing for a specific demographic or culture of society, no but they do it.
All in all, it is a freedom of choice, and expression, simply put, to each its own. Well all have different taste, styles, and ideas. To critize someone for something they like, or for there style, there is no need for it.
Bottom line, if you have nothing nice to say, then don't say anything at all.
earldjjones 02-13-2008, 10:40 PM The ML is definitely made for off road use.Mercedes has a special off-road driver ed class for people who really want to explore the ML's off road capabilities. I owned one just before I bought my Armada and was offered the course by Mercedes. As far as the wheels (or any other mods) I say go with what makes you feel good. Remember, not one of these guys is paying for your truck, so make it YOUR truck! Drop it, jack it up, do what you want, it's yours to do with as you please. CA, best club on the web!
