Tesla's sports car drives for a penny a mileJuly 20, 2006 7:16 AM PDT
The Tesla Roadster is an all-electric sports car. It costs $90,000 and doesn't come out until next year, but it cooks. The car and its technology were unveiled this week at a promotional event in Santa Monica, Calif.

Man a penny a mile. How great would that be? I could drive up and down Cali for 10bucks. Awesome.

Uh. no. Your power bills would be through the roof. Electric cars take tons of electricity to charge. The amount of petrochemical fuel needed to generate the electricity is more than the amount you would use if you just put gas into the car. So:
1. It would cost more per mile in electricity vs. Gas costs
2. You would be burning more gas at the power station than in your engine, causing us to use more gas and hurt the environment more.
3. It would be a PITA to refuel.

Until they invest heavily in Nuke power plants, electric, hydrogen, Fuel cells, etc. are all inefficient fuel types. ;)

Looks nice. 90K is a bit steep but then it's all relative - how much would this car cost with an equivelant gas motor? Also you must consider new technologies are seldom cheap. Only once they produce higher quantities and there are competotors will the prices come down. I have to agree with TB it will certainly cost more than 1 cent per mile. How much will it really cost?????
Your guess is as good as mine. I doubt it's thru the roof, though.
What was the range on a charge? I'm sure it has some decent acceleration times.:D
