: Front struts too soft!
DRTSRFR 08-24-2006, 12:20 PM Just wondering if anyone has changed their struts. I think the front struts are way under damped. My 'mada feels like a boat.
Doesn't the titan have a strut(Rancho)upgrade?
92TripleBlack 08-24-2006, 07:06 PM Its the sway bar. Stillen makes one. Supposedly tightens up the front end.
Campfamily 08-24-2006, 10:03 PM One of the things that has bugged me about both of my Armadas has been the way the front end feels a bit "loose", the steering seems to wiggle a bit as you go down the road. When I drove an 07 Suburban as a rental I noticed that the steering felt much better than the Armada. Also, I've noticed that the steering feels better when I'm towing my trailer. My weight distribution hitch transfers some of the tongue weight to the front axle, so I figured it was similar to the way a truck usually rides better with a load than without. ?????

dahubby 08-25-2006, 03:13 AM On my trip, when i hit a bump in the road at 80 the front end would literally try to shake out of my hands and pull both ways. i figured it was due to the load, but i see its a common problem. I think Nissan needs to fix this. I hit a couple of speed bumps here to and the front bottomed out. I wasnt even going fast....
keala 08-25-2006, 04:40 AM i actually thought it was just me. I've been feeling this allot.thought it might have been the truck and just settled on the fact that i couldn't do anything about it.hopefully we get more responses on this issue(didn't mean that in a bad way).maybe it's the struts or the sway bar?
92TripleBlack 08-25-2006, 09:03 AM Remember, Its an SUV. Everyone here is complaining about the suspension being tuned to allow off road driving as well as on road driving. The Sway bar will tighten it up and make it more like a car. But Nissan made it to be an all terrain vehicle. There isn't any "fixing" that it needs. The tune is mild compared to most off road vehicles that allow the axels to rotate freely. If you want to tune it for street only though the parts are available. That's what the sway bar is for. But before you do this, find a dirt road that looks scary and try it. You may just like it. ;)

I disagree a little. Ive owned a 2004 Montero limited, an escalade, a suburbanan acura MDX and a jeep grand cherokee in the last five years. I have used them all for trips and none of them ever bounced me aroun when i hit a bump doing baout 80 on the highway. I honestly think if i took it off road and i hit a bump it would be worse. There no that much suspension travel before they bottom out so i beleive the coil need to be a little stiffer.. Jst an opinion though....

I don't experience any bounce unless I'm braking while going diagonally into and over a drainage curb. Its tight at speed over any bumps etc. I've hit so far. You may have something wrong. Good luck.
DRTSRFR 08-25-2006, 11:24 AM I don't think a swaybar is going to fix the problem, it's not the body roll I have an issue with, I beleive the struts are under damped. I own a '73 Bronco rock crawler and with very soft springs and Rancho rs9ooo's. Set correctly, it doesn't exibit any of these traits. I work in the road racing suspension industry and am very familiar with spring and damping forces. On my Bronco if I set the shocks to soft it will exibit the exact same behavior and will improve as I firm up the damping. That's primarily where my theory comes from...
Mizike 10-18-2006, 04:24 PM I've noticed the same thing as well but could not find any after market shocks unless the titans have the same front suspension.
92TripleBlack 10-18-2006, 08:44 PM When I hear handles like a boat I generally think body roll. What are you experiencing? Also, do you have standard or tow air bag suspension? Last, do you have the stock junk tires? I thought mine felt like a liner until I swapped tires. The sidewalls on the stock Contis are junk and make the handing feel vague and squishy. Swap in good tires and it really wakes up the suspension as well as more nimble, firm, etc. Shocks and struts will help lower lean and bouncyness, but tire will probably have a much greater overall positive effect. ;)
DRTSRFR 10-19-2006, 11:22 AM ...like the front end wallowing up and down and the wheels feeling unplanted.
It's the off road edition with the tow package. I had the problem with the stock wheel/tire combo, but have since installed 20's and the feeling
remains...a little improved but still unsettling. It scares the heck out of my wife when she hits an expansion joint or something similar. My feeling is Nissan is trying to make a TRUCK ride like a Cadillac and this is the result.
thundertracks 10-19-2006, 09:55 PM The biggest complaint I had with the Armada was the way it would skip over an expansion joint, really bad when going into a turn and hitting one. The JUNK Contis would actually leave the pavement and the truck would drift a bit. I agree with TB, after I put the Bridgestone Revos on there was a world of difference in ride and handling. I tried them on the stretch of road that has the expansion joints I referred to and the truck stayed in contact with the road, did not skip over it. But I also think the front suspension could use a bit more travel.

I don't have anything like the sort on mine. The handling is firm and crisp for the size truck I have. You may have a suspenion problem. The only negative I have on mine is when I hit a rut at an angle like one caused by a drainage area that crosses the road. In this case the body has excess motion, but this is due to the length of the vehicle wheelbase and isn't really "correctable". As for expansion joints in the road, I don't even know when I hit one. Same for speed bumps. Most I just drive like they aren't there going over them at about 40mph. If you brake going into a speed bump, the nose dives and the force is magnified as you are in effect ramming it. If you accelerate, it acts like a jump. If you coast over it, you minimize its effects.
I would do two things. One, have a service dept look at it. Two, take a demo at the dealer for a spin over some of the features that are giving you problems and see if it is your armada or all armadas that have the same problem. ;)
