I wanted to use the HU speakers to listen to movies so I did a little search here and found something explaining that I would need to have the "hidden harness", which I don't have. Now, I ran a stereo mini cable from the AUX up front to the AV ouput of the DVD player and it worked, but when pushed all the way in it sounded terrible and when pushed half way in it sounded good...why is it doing that?

Possibly the wrong cable. Sounds like you have a MONO type plug. You need stereo. Plus do you have an aftermarket HU or the OEM radio. Going by what you said I take it as the OEM.

Still have the OEM HU and yes, I have the right (stereo) cable.

Does the DVD player have it's own Volume setting? Could be at max!
R U using the headphone jack from the dvd to go to the aux? Long time ago I had the same prob in a diff car and had to settle for it being 1/2 way out.
Have you thought about trying to split your Audio out from the DVD using a splitter. Get a y splitter with 3 female ends or 1 female 2 male and get a rca to plug type cable and get 2 female couplings. Wally world has the splitters in the audio section made by scosche. you would need two for your left and right channels.

try splicing into the wires behind the dash vs. using the plug. Like said above the plug isn't the greatest so there may be a problem with it.

Not hard at all. Just pull out with your fingers on the top of it. It's held on with clips, once you get the top loose just work your way down the sides.
Oh man!, it was an easy fix, I just plugged in the headphones jack instead of the AV output and damn it sounds good, it sounds beeter than my home theater system.
