: Has anyone insulated CAI tubing ?
drcookie 10-22-2006, 06:03 PM Hey folks,
I did a search but came up nothing.
I would like to find out if anyone has attempted to insulate the CAI tubing?
I am currently using TrueFlow CAI and the tubing to the throttle body gets pretty hot after a short drive. Does it help if I put some insulation on the tubing to prevent heat from the engine from warming up the pipe? If yes, what type of insulation should I use?
Please advice.
ggeorgie 10-22-2006, 06:15 PM I have the Volant, and it gets hot too, just like every thing else in the negine compartment, Radiator hose, brake lines , spark plug wires, vacuem hoses, etc, and it is normal to be hot. unless the temperature gage is showing (H), then you have a problem.
drcookie 10-22-2006, 06:22 PM oppsss... posted on the wrong section again. My bad !
razzlee 10-22-2006, 09:24 PM I think I read something on intake tube insulation at Club Titan. Try a search over there. You could always try the Throttle body intercooler mod. I think ThrustTitan came up with that one...
06armadaSE4x2 10-22-2006, 11:25 PM it is normal to be hot. The entire engine is.
razzlee 10-23-2006, 02:30 AM I think what Drcookie is getting at is...what's the point of a CAI if the air heats up while travling through the hot tube. There are a few things that folks are doing over at CT that offer some suggestions. Check it out.

Thanks razzle. That is what I was looking for - in attempt to cool the air passing through the CAI to the throttle body,
I did not even though the is a coolant line passing through the TB. What is the porpose of that?
I read through the threats in CT for TB bypass but I did not see if the members who did it actually received any gain for doing the mod. Can anyone clarify?
razzlee 10-23-2006, 03:46 AM please understand that I am, just this summer, trying to learn about engines and how they work. So please don't take my word as more than a very novice understanding of whats going on under the hood.
I think there is engine coolant going through the TB to help warm up the engine during cold weather. Bypassing the TB keeps the engine cool for a short time after startup durring which time more HP and TQ are available. I think scr38 mentioned in a previous post that there was a small gain.
If I am way off on my understanding of this, please let me know, as I am just trying to learn

razzle, don't worry about the disclaimer. I am pretty much on the same boat.
Thanks for pointing to CT site for the TB bypass. I may give it a try since it won't hurt much and it was an easy mod as well. Living in sunny California where the temparature above freezing 90% of the time, I don't believe I need the help from coolant to warm up the TB. Now, putting the TB cooler would be a relatively difficult task but that is a cool idea. :)
razzlee 10-23-2006, 04:29 AM Someone put a ball valve on the hose into the TB. I thought that was a good way to get the best of both worlds.
as far as the TB intercooler, it sounds like a great idea but way over my skill-set.

Yup. I totally agree. I have just read the ball valve section about 10 mins ago. This is definately the mod for this weekend. :)
TB intercooler can wait. :)
baseballfanz 10-23-2006, 12:30 PM From my reading up on these thing, the air move too fast across the intake tube for it to really get heat up. They do sell intake tube wrap.
