Sounds like the Vehicle Slip Control system cut in to keep you out of the ditch.

A loud noise and vibration that may be felt in the brake pedal is normal when the ABS/VDC operates.

Definitely the ABLS. I've been using it alot lately. Noisy with an ugly sound (Sounds like it's broken but it's not) but it sure works. You'll also hear it if you spend any time offroad in sand or shallow mud. I tend to sink mine a little on the pond banks sometimes.

Joe - next time it's slippery outside, find a big open area (an empty parking lot works great), and try accelerating hard, braking hard, turning hard. It's best to feel what these systems feel like before you really need them. There have been a lot of accidents attributed to people releasing their brakes when the ABS kicks in, because they think something is wrong. I recommend this to anybody who buys a car with ABS / traction control / stability control that hasn't had one before.
