: 5.6L 06' vs 07'

I see that the 07' produces 317hp and the older 5.6L has 305hp. What did Nissan do to create another 12 HP?

Also, I was reading a Road and Track type of magazine and it showed that a stock 06' Armada runs 15.8 in the 1/4 mile. That sure is impressive for such a beast like that. But not sure how accurate those figures are.

Variable valve timing

Heres a post from one of our mods who knows his stuff....

"Most of the 12 HP gain came from the VVT on the intake cam (and the necessary ECM program for it). There is a very slight change in the intake manifold and exhaust system that may have added to the gain".

As for the speed, Ive raced a few cars in my life and I can tell you my 07 does low 15's in the 1/4

thats pretty slow. considering motortrend clocked an 04' Armada Se offroad at 15.1 in the 1/4 mile.

My 04 SE best 1/4 time is 14.45.

How is that slow? That's faster then 90% of cars weighing half as much?
And with some extra hp and tq, it should only get faster.

I ment for an armada.

I ment for an armada.

Oh, I see.
The spread I've seen for 1/4's been under .5 sec from magazines to track.
In the case of Armada, it's been faster than what's advertised.

a stock mada running the 1/4 .5s under 15.1?!?!

........vvt.........

I am pretty sure there is NO VVT on any Armada or Titan in any year. I think the 12hp comes from the 2 degree advance being set at the factory for the 07. And in any case the pre-07s were grossly underrated at 305hp anyway, the Nissan 5.6 can stay with/beat the 5.7 345hp Hemi in a lighter truck.
When you see VVT on the next big Nissan V8 expect Toyota numbers, ~+380hp. VVT is worth a LOT more than 12 hp.

That's what I was thinking. Anytime they make a design change in valves, it's very noticable. IMO: VVT is today's version of Quad-Valve pistons.

I am positive the 07s have VVT on the intake cams. I have looked at it myself, and have taken pictures of the sensors and actuators. I have looked in the Nissan parts book and have a copy of the page showing the VVT parts.
The 07 does not come with the timing advance. The initial timing for the 07s is 15 just like all the rest. I have done the timing advance on a 07; it was set at 15, I moved it to 17.
The VVT is on the intake cams only, and is not a variable amount ot timing change, but just a step of a few degrees. The ECM is programmed to change the timing of the intake cams so we still have the good low end power, but the shift in cam timing gives more mid and high speed power.
See attached pictures of the VVT parts. Compare the pictures to pre 07s; you won't see these parts.

I know it isn't the noise that Kramer from Seinfield used to make.

I stand corrected but it seems like a half a**d effort to only do a limited VVT upgrade on the intake while Toyota has come out with a fully VVT engine. It is not like Nissan is not already doing it on thier VQ45 and pulling 345hp out of just 4.5 liters.

a stock mada running the 1/4 .5s under 15.1?!?!

I am not modded except for a K&N drop in and the so called "air box" mod.

This is typical in cool weather. Not quite .5 under 15.1 but it is in the 14's.

Mods like SCR38's will bring it on down.
