: Transmission Service....

I am thinking about having the the Stealership perform a Transmission Service....Flushed with new fluid and replace a filter. However the service manager told me that the Armada doesn't have a filter.

Is this correct? He mentioned that it had a screen, but no filter. Every automatic I have ever owned had a filter so it this seems strange to me.

I got the same infor from my dealer, Herb Gordon in Silver Spring, MD!

Well, at least their stories are the same. I wonder how they get by without using a filter?

There is no filter. Many auto transmissions don't have filters, just screens.

Obviously a screen has much higher durability than a filter but do you know if there is any point when the screen should be changed out?

No routine change on the screen. But if the screen should ever become covered or clogged, you have major problems! Not because of the clogged screen, but what clogged it.
About the only thing that could cause material to be caught by a screen or filter would be the failure of the friction material on the clutch plates or bands. In that case, no filter or screen is going to help.
So material caught by the screen is after a failure has happened, it is not preventing a failure.

My past experience says it just needs to be cleaned if you tranny gets rebuilt or if you have to drop the pan, not replaced.

Thanks for the Info...most of my experience has been with Chevy's. So this is probably the first time I have heard of screens being used.

Thanks again....

Anyone know how many quarts it takes to drain and refill the tranny? I am planning on doing this myself. I have to order the matic-j from online and I want to order enough to do the job.

Thanks

Looks like 11-1/4 qt for an '05 from the '05 Maintenance Guide. You should probably download the '07 Guide to confirm. Registration is free and you're limited to 2 downloads per day unless signed up on paid subscription: http://x.nissanhelp.com/forums/local_links.php?catid=39

Thanks for the info. Great download too. The '07 maintenance manual was worth signing up for. I was suprised to see the alternative engine oil weights it recommended. All the way up to 15w-50. But it still shows 75w-90 rear diff fluid. I've been reading up on the rear diff fluid in this and other nissan forums and the concensus is to fill the rear with 75w-140. I do tow alot, we own a 29' 4600lb travel trailer. I took you'all's advice and dumped the 75w-90 and added 75w-140. I notice nothing different about how the Armada drives, so must be ok.... I have an appointment with the stealer on monday to get a rattling front door window looked at, I plan on asking them what they put in Armadas that need servicing.

does changing your tranny oil void your warranty with nissan. I owned a Titan and on Titantalk, they said it voids the tranny warranty when the tranny oil used is not from nissan

Not looking at the manual at the moment, but I seem to remember that it does.

I would be willing to bet that Nissan would have a very hard time voiding your warranty (after you get a lawyer involved) as long as you used the mfg. suggested fluid type(s). That would be like them voiding your engine warranty for using Motorcraft oil and not Nissan oil in the same weight, or a different brand oil filter, etc. etc.

Per the Owner's Manual:

Use only NISSAN Matic J ATF. Do not mix with other fluids.

Using automatic transmission fluids other than NISSAN Matic J ATF will cause deterioration in driveability and automatic transmission durability, and may cause damage to the automaitc transmission, which is not covered by the NISSAN new vehicle limited warranty.

I work with a fellow( milwright by trade, trained in the uk 40 odd years ago) who did not believe in changing engine oil, just topping up and changing the filter, he bought a new F*&D and the engine blew after 2.5 years, the F&^D dealer said even though you are in the warantee period you never changed the oil so no warrantee on the blown engine....Well the judge read the paper work from the vehicle and concluded that oil change intervals were a suggestion( the manual word even said suggested oil change intervals)... not mandatory...sorta like when a waiter suggests the daily special at a restaurant..you do not have to follow suggestions..and ordered the manufacturer to pay for the new engine....

just a thought

What does it say about motor oil? or Rear Differential fluid, or Antifreeze? I do not have my manual handy.

Thanks Pops.

FYI: Differential fluid isn't in the Owner's Manual. 75W90 or 75W85 is actually what they factory recommend.
