: Electric brake controller
boda47 05-10-2007, 08:37 PM Never having the need to tow a travel trailer I never thought of the brake controller. I thought the 7-pin harness did everything.
OK, now that I am picking up my 718Zoom next Friday, I need help in determining the best controller to buy and how to install it on my O7 SE Armada. I saw that directions were given before for an Exterra.
scr38 05-10-2007, 11:26 PM The Prodigy controller is the best you can buy; its about $100.00. You can get a wiring harness with it that plugs directly into the harness that is in place on your Armada. all plug and play, no splicing.
If you have the Tow Package you won't need anything else.
See attachment for location of the controller harness. You don't need to remove any of the dash as in the picture. The connector is taped to a harness on the left side of the steering column.
boda47 05-11-2007, 03:46 PM Ordered the Prodigy today. Looks like I can get it in. Any advise on where to install under the dashboard?

I mounted mine on the lower part of the dash, to the right of the steering column. It does not get in the way there and is easy to reach if you want to apply the trailer brakes manually, or make an adjustment.
boda47 05-18-2007, 08:19 PM Thanks for all the help. The picture was very helpful. Once I found it, Nissan did include a lable on the wire which was very kind/smart of them.
When I powered up I got the n.c. and then the .. Does the Prodigy ever shut off? Or is there some way of shutting it off other that pulling the connection on the back?
Chris03HD 05-18-2007, 09:18 PM Ordered mine a while back from the advice/help of scr38. :)
Have yet to install it, but after looking real quick under the dash, it seems my wire (which is also labled) is caught up on something. Thinking its just going to be easier to drop that dash pannel and save my big hands some scrapes.

The .. will be there anytime the truck is on if you don't have a trailer connected.
It is a good thing, because it will warn you if the trailer plug came loose while using the trailer. The warning would be much better than finding out you don't have trailer brakes during an emergency stop!
Don't worry about turning the unit off. The current draw is very small, and won't cause any problem.
Dustoff-00 05-19-2007, 09:50 AM I find that my Prodigy goes into sleep mode. Or it seems that way, because when I get into the truck the lights are off until I turn ignition on.

OK...I guess I'm a kinda "challenged". I have been trying to find the controller harness, and not having much luck. I think it would be easiest for ME to just remove the lower dash panel. I'm not as young or flexible as I used to be I guess. I tried removing the lower dash panel, and wasn't able to do that either, but I didn't want to break anything either, so I didn't work it very hard. Are there more screws than the two lower ones you can easily see? Thanks in advance for any help here!
Also, does the brake controller just plug into this directly, if you have a 7 pin, or do you need to plug in the OEM supplied thing, and then splice into the controller?
Dustoff-00 06-02-2007, 12:55 AM Buy this controller, call them and ask for the Armada OEM plug adapter.

The harness is located up and to the left of the hood release lever behind the panels. You have 2 screws on the plastic outer panel and I think 3 on the inner panel. Plug the brake controller in according to the instructions.
Should be pretty easy from there.
Chris03HD 06-02-2007, 08:30 AM only 2 screws on the bottom, rest are pressure clips.
remove the screws, and give the pannel a firm tug.
took all of 10minutes once the pannel was off to locate the plug, and mount the controllers bracket.
done.

Cool. Thanks!
gbertsch01 04-27-2009, 03:49 PM Does anyone have pics of where you tied in the 4 wires? Just got my prodigy and want to install it, i'm no electric expert but think this shouldnt be too bad with a little guidance.
FWIW, I used the Prodigy Nissan Harness ($11) and it just plugged right in.

Perfect, actuallY I followed your exact link and purchased the prodigy and harness so sounds like i'm good to go!:D
The toughest part of the install was deciding where to mount it. I put it next to my steering column on the left side underneath the Dash Dimmer switch. My knee sometimes bumps the lever when getting in and out so I'm thinking about removing the lever and keeping it in the center console.
FWIW, I found the cheapest price for Big Tow mirrors on eNissanParts.com (http://www.nissanonlineparts.com/storename/cherryhillnissan/ViewDept-250392-3.aspx). I was contemplating ordering them when my local parts guy called me about some parts I had come in and he offered to match the price so I told him I can't resist that offer. :D
mikeak 05-13-2009, 02:11 AM Pops -did you remove the panel? Doesn't sound so from your post and from reading the manual it isn't needed. From looking at the picture on the first page it seems needed and well from not finding it :) -- I am going to try again tomorrow, but right now my neck hurts to much from the bending required to look up there :)
Edit: ok couldn't wait so went back out there (now my neck really hurts) So found it and it is taped to another cord. Question - do you remove the tape to the other cord? I can do that without removing the panel, but I can also leave it where it is at and I think I can connect to the adapter - not sure if there would be a reason not to leave it up there -- seems best secured that way
I pulled the plastic panel off but left the metal one alone. I just followed exactly like the pic in Scr38's post. You just remove the 2 bottom side screws then pull the plastic panel off. Then I cut the tape using scissors and threw it away.
gbertsch01 05-13-2009, 10:45 AM Mine was very easy to spot, it was directly behind the panel to the far left and was the only wire that had a white label on it to indicate it is the brake controller.
