QX56 TVandNav2Go Installation

For QX56 owners here's a write-up of how to install the TVandNav2Go unit (www.tvandnav2go.com) (http://www.tvandnav2go.com). I have a 2007 QX56, with factory navigation and factory rear DVD unit. The TvandNav2Go (from here on in referred to "TN2G" ;) ) box with the Plug and Play harness I picked up from Mr. Lego from this forum. I plan to use the TN2G device so that I can route to the front Navigation screen whatever is playing on the rear DVD system.

http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d75/ShadyJC/TN2G/SG1L2939.jpg

YOU WILL BE TAKING APART SEVERAL PARTS OF YOUR CAR, DRILLING INTO SOME SECTIONS AND CUTTING/SPLICING SOME WIRES. THIS WORKED FOR ME, I MAKE NO GUARANTEES THAT IT WILL WORK FOR YOU. DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK!!

Here's some stuff I had to buy:

Radio Shack SPST flush mount rocker switch 275-693
http://rsk.imageg.net/graphics/product_images/pRS1C-2160432t98.jpg

Radio Shack 6-Ft RCA to Tinned Wires 42-2371
http://rsk.imageg.net/graphics/product_images/pRS1C-2266503w345.jpg (http://rsk.imageg.net/graphics/product_images/pRS1C-2266503w345.jpg)

Squeeze tap connectors (available at any auto parts store)
T-Tap connectors

Prep:
I wired my rocker switch to a few lead wires. I left about a foot of wire - I did this so I could extend the switch anywhere I wanted it. Turns out I didn't need this, but at the time it was good thinking. This is the switch I intended to use to flip between the normal NAV screen and my Video 1 input. I believe that a NEW unit purchased from the manufacturer may already have a switch wired in for you.

Objective #1 - connect the Plug and Play cable to the stock navigation display

1. Set your parking brake

2. Pry up the little cover over the shift-lock release button. Put a flat-head screwdriver down, apply pressure, and shift the vehicle into Neutral.

3. Remove the Shift Knob. Pull down on the little hood, and unscrew the knob in a counter-clockwise direction.
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d75/ShadyJC/TN2G/SG1L2941.jpg

4. Lift up on the center console finisher, I found it easiest to pull up from the back, closest to the storage compartment.
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d75/ShadyJC/TN2G/SG1L2943.jpg

5. There is enough slack in the wiring to have the console finisher sit on the side, but if you wish you can disconnect the whole thing with a single plug and set it off to the side.

6. Time to remove the radio bezel ("Cluster lid C"). Pull!
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d75/ShadyJC/TN2G/SG1L2945.jpg

7. Disconnect the clips. For the most part, everything only fits back in one place. But it may be a good idea to take a mental or physical picture for yourself if you feel like you may forget where things go.
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d75/ShadyJC/TN2G/SG1L2947.jpg

8. This should be the end result once you have the radio bezel off.
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d75/ShadyJC/TN2G/SG1L2949.jpg

At this point, I was thinking about trying to take off the surrounding panel with the air vents ("Cluster Lid D"), but after unsuccessfully trying to yank it out for a while I decided to just work around it.

9. Remove the factory radio by taking out 4 screws.
10. With the radio out, you should now have enough room to reach behind the Nav screen and unplug the connector. To this connector, attach one end of the PnP cable that came with the TN2G unit, and attach the other end of the TN2G PnP wire harness to the back of the Nav screen where you just removed the factory connector.
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d75/ShadyJC/TN2G/SG1L2951.jpg

11. Now you have to take the other end of the PnP wire harness and run it down thru the dash and console to where you intend to install the actual TN2G box. I decided I would put it in the center storage compartment, underneath the DVD player.

Objective #2 - Tap the OEM DVD player's Video signal

12. Open up the storage comparment lid, on the opposite side of the hinge there are two rubber "feet", you can remove those and you'll find two screws under there. Remove the screws.

13. The very bottom of the compartment is a thin piece of fuzzy carpet, remove this and expose the 3 screws there and remove.
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d75/ShadyJC/TN2G/SG1L2952.jpg

14. When you've removed those 5 screws, you can pull on the whole compartment and it should come up and out. I'd suggest putting a towel or something on the trim panels in front so you don't scratch them up.
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d75/ShadyJC/TN2G/SG1L2954.jpg

Unfortunately, this is where I forgot and stopped taking pictures, sorry! But i'll attempt to describe in as much detail what to do next.

15. The video signal (for the 2007 QX56) is on the blue connector on the back of the DVD player, pin #23 on connector M206 (service manual AV-77). It's a black and white wire. I used a set of T-Tap connectors I found with quick disconnects to tap the signal. Basically I put the dark blue connector around the video signal wire, and crimped the quick disconnect spade onto center wire of the the RCA-to-tinned wire I got from Radio Shack, and then connected them together.

<Note by Pops: (Pin #23 is the +POS, and Pin #24 [Blue] is the -NEG)>

http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d75/ShadyJC/TN2G/SG1L2956.jpg

[B] Objective #3 - Power and mount the TN2G box

16. To tap power for the TN2G unit, there is a power socket on the back panel of the storage compartment. Cut away the black plastic sheath and you'll expose a blue and a black wire. The blue wire is power - so I quick-spliced that to the Positive lead of the TN2G power cable. Ditto for the black wire and the negative lead of the Tn2G power cable. I used taps like these:

http://rsk.imageg.net/graphics/product_images/pRS1C-2266040t98.jpg (http://rsk.imageg.net/graphics/product_images/pRS1C-2266040t98.jpg)

17. I found that the little "well" in the rear driver side of the storage compartment was large enough to accomodate the TN2G box, so that's where I put it.
18. Now, connect the cables to the TN2G box. The video cable you just spliced up in step #15 goes to Video 1. The power cable you tapped in step #16 goes to power. The monitor cable you ran back from the factory screen in step #11 goes to the RGB connector.

19. The only thing left is to wire your switch. I drilled a 3/4 hole in the storage console right above the DVD player and put my switch there. Then I tapped the lead wires I put together in the PREP stage to the Red/Black combo from the TN2G box with more of those quick-splice taps.

20. You need to put the storage console back down, the radio bezel and center console back on and re-connect all the wires. Turn on the car, select DVD and hit the switch - if all has gone well, you should see the rear DVD signal on your front screen!

21. Assuming that everything is working properly, this is the time to put all the screws back for the storage compartment, put the shift knob back on and basically button everything back up.

Here's the end result, it works like a charm. Note that the TN2G device has capability for a 2nd video input. One option for me is to tap the rear view camera video, so I can always see what's going on back there instead of only when in reverse. This doesn't seem to hold much value for me. More likely will be some type of Carputer in the future, but for now, I have exactly what I need.

Very cool mod. It's very tempting.

BTW, I see you have a remote in your middle console. Is that for the factory equipment or do you have after market audio?

The remote should have come with the DVD standard as well as the wireless headphones x 2.... Take a look here: http://www.courtesyparts.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=CP&Product_Code=28267-REMOTE

They have the remote, but for $75 + shipping/handling??? Ouch!

If you didn't receive the remote you had better go back to the dealer.... It is apart of the package!

Definitely standard. Someone probably "barrowed" yours while it was still on the lot. Some dealerships pull them and keep them inside the building to prevent theft or misplacement and sometimes forget to hand them out too. Happened to my folks on their GX470, they just went back to the Lexus lot and asked for them and they pulled another set from inside a file cabinet.

Hi, I was wondering which wire exactly did you splice into for the video out? There are two plugs and I know you mentioned that you tapped into the Black with white wire on the blue plug, but I on the blue plug I have 2 wires that are black with white and also for the (-) side of the RCA which blue wire did you tap into?

Pin #23 [Black/White] is the +POS, and Pin #24 [Blue] is the -NEG.

I went ahead and added a wiring diagram and note to Step 15 for you guys to help clear up confusion on the harness. I'm sure JC will respond when he has time.

I'm pretty sure the '05 Titan should be the same. Baseballfanz would know for sure.

So Pops do you need to hoop up the video + pin 23 and - pin 24? from what I am reading I only think he hooked up pin23 for the video signal...

Thanks for the quick response..

I think that I may have seen where he posted on another thread that he only connected the + because he got his ground from elsewhere like maybe the whole unit being attached to the frame compensated for it. If it were me, I'd just go ahead and connect them both to make sure you have an unquestionable stable loop completed.

Thanks for the assist Pops!

Hey G10titan, I can't think of a reason why this wouldn't work on a 2005, you just need to get the right wiring diagram for your model year. If you're going to go ahead with doing this, I'd purchase a one day subscription to nissan-techinfo.com and spend the time to download your complete service manual.

And to answer the question, I do recall I only tapped the '+' connection, don't know if I was just lazy or clueless, but it does work for me with the one tap.

Sorry for the late reply guys, been difficult for me to get on the forums lately.

Thanks JC!!! Figured you're busy.

To clear up a little more, the diagram I posted is from my '05 Mada. There's no doubt that it will work for an '05 Armada, the real question will be if the Titan has the same harnesses available and from what I've seen, I think that they should be the same.

This thread gave me the confidence to try this myself. Not only was ShadyJC great in providing this how to thread, but he also helped me through email to overcome some issues I was having.
Just in case others run into these issues, here they are and how I overcame them.

1. Problem: Could not get DVD output on front screen.
Solution: The green brake wire and two white wires coming out of the tvandnav2go unit have to be grounded if you do not attach them to the emergency brake.

2. Problem: Nav display was missing the color yellow and looked very dim.
Solution: Found a bent pin in the tvandnav2go cable. (Thanks to ShadyJC for suggesting that I check pins).

While I had everything apart, I also rewired audio to get rid of the FM modulator (DVD is not OEM) using the instructions by llajumpvid. Worked like a charm.

Thanks once again and this really is the best car forum I have ever been on.

qx56talk
07-23-2008, 05:26 PM
I had heard there are ones that hook up at the DVD player but that is not the one I have. I have the one that connects directly behind the screen. The cable they sent me just plugs in in between the cable to the screen and the screen itself. It came with a switch attached but that was an ugly one so I cut that off and soldered on the same one that is shown in the picture. The only splicing I had to do was for power. Hope that answers you question.

Also check this thread.. $50 and does the same thing, PLUS bypasses the Navigation to allow you to use greyed out NAV menus while moving.

I saw that thread before. It is very interesting how they finally got that to work but that is for an 08 which already routes DVD to the front nav. Before 08 no system did that so you needed the RGB device (like tvandnav2go) to get the DVD output to the front nav screen.
BTW, I told tvandnav2go about my bent pin in the cable and they are sending me a new one just in case that pin ever breaks off. They really stand behind their product.

I have an 05 just to let you know.

ShadyJC and others,
Thanks for the how-to, schematics, pics, info etc regarding this mod. I ordered up a unit from TVandNAV2Go and did the install this weekend. Everything worked like a charm although I forgot to adjust the brightness level on the unit and had to dive back in again to dial things in perfectly.

Although the pics below only show two rocker switches, I actually ended up with three switches as I used two video input sources along with the NAV Control defeat override (Run sense defeat) which I also installed at the same time I did this. The first source is based on a video tap I did from the DVD centre over-head console feed and the second video source is from an independent media device made by Western Digital called the WD TV Media center. It basically plays any video format by simply copying the media you want to view onto a USB drive and then plugging the drive into the media player. It comes with composite video out (and HDMI) and all for about $120.00 CDN. It uses a 12V DC supply which makes powering it from the SUV an easy task.

I've posted a few pics below to help to further show some previously undocumented portions of the install. Feel free to ask any questions you need regarding this. (I've got more pics also if anyone wants a better view of any portion of the install). I decided to subscribe to infinitihelp.com in order to get a service manual for my vehicle. This made finding the correct connectors, wires, 12V source etc a breeze.

Here's a link to the Western Digital site regarding the WD TV Media Device. Its not much larger than the TVandNAVtoGo unit. Great menu system too.

Can you tell us how you made that HDD work and play videos without a PC?
Sure DBL047,
Although Western Digital is synonymous with manufacturing hard drives, this device (WD TV) is not a hard drive at all. Its a High Definition Media player capable of reading digital media from your USB drive or any mass storage device for that matter, with playback/video output up to 1080P via HDMI cable or lesser resolution via composite video. It also manages photo viewing (jpg's etc) and music playback (mp3s etc). Its a stand-alone device meaning that no PC integration is needed and it runs on 12V DC (Via AC/DC supply). Its also got a great menu system for media selection etc. Check out the link above. This could be the next best media device for cars. Its compact, it runs on DC voltage, storage capacity is only limited to the USB drive you store your media on, and best of all, its cheap!

I paid USD $225.00 + shipping for the TVandNAV2Go module. I wasn't so keen on the toggle switch that came with it so I bought my own. If you guys were to get a group of 15 or more together for a group buy, Dominic at TVandNAV2Go has mentioned he would sell them at $185.00 ea.

If I'm not mistaken the 06' and 07' QXs have the same wiring harness and component layout therefore the info you read in this thread should work for the 06' also. Before you take the plunge, you can get a copy of the service manual from nissanhelp.com and verify similarities to be sure.

Thanks for this great posting it has really helped although I have ran into an issue. I purchased a PAC VCI-NIS1 for my 2006 QX56 and I am getting a scrolling effect. The instructions say to check the molex connections which I have several times and everything is snug. In fact the molex connector did not fit in well, I had to somewhat force them in. The pins are all straight but no luck. Do I have the right interface module? Some site say the V1 should work; owever PAC now says my vehicle needs a VCI-NIS2. Could it be that I have a weak ground? I grounded the green (handbrake) wire as well as the black (ground) wire and the two white one per a previous post. Could it also be a faulty harness? Also do I connect to the back of the display or behind the brain behind the LCD display? Both have the same connector. In performing this install I also blew a few fuses as I did not disconnect the ground terminal and now my vehicle has the airbag light flashing. All fuses are now working and the PAC module powers up. I can see my NAV display scrolling and the rear DVD video when I hit the switch. HELP!

Does anyone know how different any of this is on a 2007 Armada? Like are the wires different colors, etc?

I know this was written a while back, so is there maybe another unit for this now?

I really want to have the front screen able to show the DVD, but have very little time to do this, so I need the easiest way possible.

Thanks!
