: Diesel Engine Conversion?

Does anyone know if the Ford Excursion 6 L or 7.2 litre diesel engine will fit into an Armada - I have the opportunity to buy a Salvage Title Armada (engine fire) which needs a new engine and I thought it might be a good candidate for an engine conversion.

I have an 06 Off Road Edition Armada but I love the idea of a diesel 4x4 Armada which would also give me the abilty to either use bio-diesel or even vegi oil.....

Also does anyone know of any shops which specialise in these kind of conversions in Southern Cailfornia ?

I am finding little to NO info on the web -

no idea who much it would cost and what would be involved etc My quest for prices and info begins....not even sure if this kind of conversion is legal in California....

I found some rebuilt 6L and 7.2 L engines for between $5k and $6K.

Anyway I figure this is a good place to start - looking for some answers.

Cheers all

Keep in mind that a compatible Transmission and transfer case might need to be considered as well. I would guess that the V10 block would be too long for the Mada's bay considering that an Excursion's hood looks to me like it might be longer than ours. Maybe one of those Limo shops might also know as well since they make alot of Limo SUV's these days.

I will cry if you are the first with a diesel mada. I love the idea of a mada with a diesel engine and would be the only one i would trade my current Mada for.

The Ford 6L had some real issues, some so bad some folks are claiming they can never bet set right.

Why the Ford diesel? Have you considered the GM Duramax diesel with the Allison transmission? My father-in-law has two Chevy 1 ton flatbeds for his construction company. The Duramax / Allison is an awesome drivetrain, when those trucks are unloaded, they haul ***! And, they average around 16 mpg, even when driven by construction workers. One is relatively new, the other has about 30K miles on it, and hasn't had any problems.

I'm not set on any particular diesel engine or manufacturer, just want something that will work and fit within the Armada application.

However Similar power, torque, etc are other considerations -

I've owned Ford's and GM's and had issues with both which is why I moved to Nissan and been happy ever since......

now if only I could find a Jap Diesel engine / that might do the trick - and a shop to put it in !

regards.

Here's a link to the Nissan Diesel USA Site. If you go to Dealers, it lists shops in your area. I'm curious if one of these Light Duty Diesel setups would work.

The Duramax engine is an Isuzu. It is a very good engine.

...didn't know that. My father-in-law is the epitomy of all-American, despite having a Dodge Ram (built in Mexico) as a daily driver. I've been trying to convince him to get a Titan to replace his Ram, but he won't, because he "doesn't want to be seen driving up to a job-site in one of those Jap-crap trucks". Now I've got something else to razz him about:D .

There was talk of putting the cummins in. Never happened. It was supposed to happen in '07

Ditto the 6.0L Ford. They are junk. I am surprised there is not a class action lawsuit.

I would highly doubt you could fit any of the domestic diesel engines into an Armada...matching the tranny, the ECU, exhaust manifold and the size of those giants into the engine bay of the Armada shound almost impossible to me...

The only one I would want is the I-6 Cummins and it is too long for the Armada's engine compartment anyway.

hey man, i'd go chevy duramax. best engine out there for sure. as far as doing the conversion, since you're in so cal, i'd talk with off road unlimited (offroadunlimited.com). they've done a lot of engine converions, i believe the have a cummins in an old blazer. if you're willing to drive a bit farther, here in redding there is a shop that has put cummins engines in just about everything, called j&h performance (http://www.jandhperformance.net/). also, your jag looks pretty sweet. is it a 4.0? i've had two xj-s cars, both late 80s V12s. maintenance nightmare, but what a car!!!! good luck man.

Thanx for the info and Links - my Jag is a 1995 6.0L V12 last of the best, and the last made by Brits, in the Uk with non-Ford parts - being British myself , I'm a bit of a snob and a purist....LOL :-)

You can check out some pics of the car here :

I Love the car and has been completely trouble free for 2 years....touch wood...now if I could fit my 4 kidz, the dog, stroller and camping gear in it I'd have no need for the Armada ;-)

cheers
