I am pretty sure this write-up has been done for the Armada, but there seems to be very suble differences to the QX56, so here it is. I picked up this CAI from another member from here. My QX56 is a 2007 model.

This is a fairly simple mod - it took me about an hour to do, while taking pictures.

DISCLAIMER - YOU WILL BE TAKING APART KEY PARTS OF YOUR VEHICLE THAT COULD AFFECT IT'S ABILITY TO OPERATE PROPERLY. BEFORE ATTEMPTING, READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS - YOU SHOULD BE BASICALLY FAMILIAR WITH WHAT YOU ARE DOING. THIS WORKED FOR ME, I MAKE NO GUARANTEES THAT IT WILL WORK FOR YOU. DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK!!

Tools needed:
10mm socket wrench
Flat head screwdriver
Philips head screwdriver
Pliers

1. Remove the engine cover. 2 Screws at the front and pull the cover UP to release the two mounts at the back.

2. Remove the screw holding the stock airbox to the vehicle, it's located right at the corner of the airbox. In the picture you can see it right next to the top clamp where you would open up the box to change the filter.

3. Prepare to remove the stock intake tube, first loosen the clamp at the throttle body

4. Remove the two breather tubes connected to the resonator of the stock intake tube. I find the simplest way is to squeeze the clamps and move them UP on the tube, then wiggle the tube off

5. Loosen the clamp at the other end of the intake tube and then you can completely remove the tube.

6. Here, I removed the top part of the airbox, exposing the air filter. I just put this up out of the way for now - the MAF is screwed into this piece, and I don't want to touch it any more than necessary.

7. Then, remove the air filter, and you will see 1 screw underneath holding the bottom part of the airbox to the vehicle. Remove this screw.

8. Now, pull up and remove the bottom piece. You'll notice that it's being held down by a screw and a rubber grommet underneath. Leave that where it is - that screw stays in the chassis.

Now that the stock components are out, let's put the Volant stuff in.

9. Put the vinyl trim piece thingy around the hole leading to the side of the engine bay, and put the Volant box in place. You'll have to align with the screw from the bottom of the stock box from step #8, and then you'll take one of the screws supplied by Volant to screw down into the hole in the middle. This was a very tight fit for me to get the screw to catch the threads.

10. Put the Reducing coupler onto the throttle body and one end of the Volant air tube and secure with the supplied clamps.

11. Put the Volant air filter into the box and stick the rubber end through the hole and attach to the other end of the Volant air tube . Secure with the supplied clamps.

12. Unscrew the MAF from the stock air box you put aside in step #6, and then put it into place on the Volant air tube and secure with screws. Make sure it is aligned the same way.

13. Re-connect the breather tubes you removed in step #4 using the Volant straight fittings to extend if necessary. Secure the breather tubes with the pinch-clamps. In this picture, you can see I used 1 of the straight fittings and the other I managed to get the original breather tube to reach all the way to the new air tube. If you purchased new, you should have 2 straight fittings, and given the option IMO you should use both. Since I bought this used, this is one of the parts that I did not get - but I managed to make it work.

14. Put the Volant cover onto the the air box and secure with supplied screws, and you're done!

Do you think the optional ram air scoop will work on the QX56??? We sell this unit, but wasn't 100% sure.

One thing I will add - The Volant came new with a rubber pad that has adhesive on one side. This pad is stuck to the metal under where the box bolts, so there is a cushion between the box and the sheet metal. This reduces noise from vibrations between the box and the metal.
