: Ticking under hood-exhaust leak?
jpspaz 07-11-2007, 01:39 AM I have a new ticking noise in my 05 LE with 40k miles. I noticed it last week after having the truck washed. It sounds like an exhaust leak. I had a cracked exhaust manifold in a Jeep I used to own and I believe it's the same problem. Anyone have any similar problems? I haven't gotten underneath it yet to check it out.:(
Madahajimoto 07-11-2007, 06:39 AM Leaks will sound like tapping noises.
There's been a few Titans with early cracked manifolds that had to be replaced.
crazyb02 07-11-2007, 10:47 AM Is the ticking loud? When I had my TL, and I questioned the ticking at the dealership, they investigated it and found that it was just the spark plugs sparking. All I'm saying is you never know.
armadadd 07-11-2007, 10:59 AM The solution will be blast the music up louder..I have so much noise coming from in and out of the truck is just keeps adding up after one is fix then the other comes so to spend less time at the dealer ignore it until it falls apart...

Sounds to me like they were pulling your leg. I don't know about the Acura but there's usually enough noise from all the moving components to cover up any noise that could come from the Spark Plugs sparking.
I kept blowing my Exhaust Manifold Gasket in an old Supra that I had and the ticking was always loud enough to hear from inside the cabin when it happened. It's most noticebale when driving between 2 buildings with the window rolled down.

The ticking in the Acura was that loud. I only noticed it when i was outside of the car and was just listening to the engine. The advisor said it was the forced induction engine in the Type-S that made the ticking a little more noticeable than usual. But like you said they could have very well been pulling my leg.
scr38 07-11-2007, 01:17 PM The ticking could come from several sources. The fuel injectors are loud on this engine. You could have a crack in an exhaust manifold. Or the click could be coming from one of the spark plug coil pacs (not the plug itself). If the click seems to be coming from the passenger side of the engine, toward the back, it is probably the coil pac. This is a common problem, and can be stopped by adding a ground wire.
The easy thing to do is to install a grounding kit, as several here have done. This will stop the clicking as well as improve other electrical functions. You can buy wire and terminals to make your own kit, or go to a place like Active Tuning to buy a kit.

How does a grounding kit improve acceleration, gas mileage and provide all the other benefits stated on the link you provided.

I don't think you will see any increase in mileage or performance, but it is possible there could be a very small increase. Our electronics are very complicated and sensitive to voltage levels. A small drop in voltage can cause big problems. The ground system is just as important as the power wiring.
In doing resistance tests from the battery negative terminal to various locations on the engine and electronic components, one owner on ClubTitan found high resistance between the battery and the throttle actuator (in excess of 5 ohms). This could cause the throttle stepping motor to operate slower due to reduced voltage.
Many people who have installed extra grounding cables have reported brighter light, quicker shifts, quicker starts, etc. after adding grounds.
And it stopped the ticking many were having.
I have installed one of the kits, and I don't think it helped power or mileage, but I do think I get quicker starts and better lighting.
One thing for sure - it won't hurt anything, and will probably help in some areas.
jpspaz 07-12-2007, 10:39 AM The tick is coming from the driver's side and is most noticeable when driving next to something while accelerating. I can't hear it unless the window is down. I took a quick look yesterday and couldn't find anything.

That is an exhaust leak. Either a cracked manifold or a leak at the flange on the left head pipe.
uteman1011 07-15-2007, 11:42 AM How long are the cracked manifolds covered under warranty? I think I've got one either cracked or leaking at a seal.
TanK1 07-15-2007, 02:38 PM I say if it's still under warranty...take it in to the dealership and have'em fix it. Now that I think about it, glad I bumped up the warranty on the TanK to 6 years 100K. Good luck
Ymryl 08-06-2007, 12:32 PM 50 bucks says it's a cracked manifold. I just had mine (drivers side) done this weekend. They replaced the passenger side about a month ago when I replac ed the rotted out exhaust with the magnaflo system. The service manager at the dealership is now calling my 'mada the demon vehicle because it has been in just about every month for the past three years. Every time they pop the hood they discover another problem.
Example? They started replacing the exhaust manifold last Wednesday and broke several bolts trying to get it off. By Saturday, when they finally called and said it was ready they had replaced the fly wheel (also cracked) and the starter (one of the teeth on the gear had broken off). Can't wait to see what goes next on this POS.
Major fixes so far:
Brakes (serviced 4 times before they finally replaced all of the hardware)
Trailer wiring harness
Drivers side door wiring
Entire rear hatch latching assembly
Exhaust system (cat back)
Both exhaust manifolds (includes Cat with passenger side)
4 tires (BTW, the Bridgestone Dueler Revos are a nice upgrade)
Windshield (improper initial installation lead to crack)
Repaint front bumper covers (driver and passenger side) due to bad factory paint
Alternator (died on the highway at 5,000 miles)
I think the service guys cringe when they see me pull in ;)
Can't wait for the new Seqouia so I can dump this thing. Hopefully Toyota will get them out the door before they stop fixing things under warranty.

I didnt have any ticking noises but noticed a sputtering noise from the passenger side of my 04 SE when I accelerated. I took it in to the dealer and they said they have had a few Armadas get cracked exhuast manifolds. They are going to replace it at no cost since the manifolds have a 60000 mile warranty. I would suggest taking it in to a dealer near you and tell them about your concerns. Escpecially if you are nearing that 60000 miles.
eurohazard 08-20-2007, 08:18 PM There are a few ways to see if you have an exhaust leak. Ticking is loud especially when parked near a wall if the leak is at the head or manifold.
You can put your foot on the exhaust pipe, and if you feel little back pressure, theres a leak forward of the tailpipe.
You can leave your car running (in Park and E brake fully engaged) and CAREFULLY move your hand around the seams of the exhaust manifold. Obviously don't physically touch it...it'll hurt. You be surprised how much pressure comes from little cracks, and how hot the air is. You have to get your hand pretty close, because you'll feel residual heat from the block and exhaust, but you'll know the leak when you feel it. Also keep your fingers and sleeves away from the drive belts.
And of course you can take it to the dealership.....but I like to KNOW what the problem is before I have someone fix it.

GREAT first post!!!!! That's good to know!!!

WOW That’s crazy I just took my Moda in for the same reason the guy had me push the brake and the gas whale he checked it all out and told me that the headers on both sides are leaking the right worse then the left and that I will probably have to get them machined flat cuz a gasket wont fix it and that mine was the 3rd one he has seen with this same problem and it’s a ***** to fix it cuz the headers and the cat tar all one piece on both sides I am still finding out just how much this is going to cost and when I do I will post it.
It is a definitely a bear because the Primary Cats are welded to the manifold. If you can find them, silicone gaskets work better than cork. Here's the parts breakdown:

JACOB 09-13-2007, 04:41 PM Thank you this will help me out alot.
jpspaz 09-13-2007, 07:55 PM Yep. Sounds like an issue for a lot of us. I can't wait to fix mine either. Just too busy right now..
uteman1011 09-14-2007, 02:44 PM Thank you this will help me out alot.
Jacob,
Mine were still under warranty so they replaced for free. Up to 60k will cover it unless have extended the warranty.
jpspaz 09-15-2007, 01:34 PM My warranty was 3 yrs or 36,000 miles. Why was yours 60,000???

I think he meant the powertrain warranty is 60,000 miles. The regular bumper to bumper warranty is still 3yr/ 36,000 mile.

Ya, they covered it under the power train warranty. (luckily!)
BlakSpyda 09-18-2007, 07:24 PM Congrats, I know you were sweating on this one!
MMIKULAK 10-19-2007, 04:08 PM I am actually at the dealer right now(thank god for wi-fi).
It was making the noise when I pulled in and showed the service advisor and he heard it. 5 minutes later the tech came out and we couldn't duplicate it. Son of a beech!!!:crikey:
I have a ticking that comes from the driver side valve cover area. I have added a 4ga wire to the passenger side head like the other posts have showed but a little differently. I couldn't get the bolt with the small gague wire to break loose so I put it on the same size bolt a little further back that holds the O2 sensor wire bracket. I figured it would be even better since I didn't remove the little one. The MO the Merrier !!
I am going to get the tranny flushed while here. I was quoted $165. Hopefully the noise comes back for them.
MMIKULAK 10-19-2007, 08:37 PM They were convinced they had it fixed- the infamous Evap dampner. I didn't hear it when I got back in to drive the 51 miles home.
Then I heard it as soon as I backed in the garage. Damn, maybe it is normal??
At least they didn't charge me for it or the 2 degree advance.
The 165 dollar tranny flush ended up 191 after tax and 12.75 shop fee.
Mike
jpspaz 10-21-2007, 03:43 PM Just had mine repaired last week. Both exhaust manifolds were bad. It took two trips to the dealer for them to figure it out. The first time they couldn't hear it. They told me if it was a small crack, it would close up when the manifolds were warm. I left my truck there for a few hours to cool down and when they started it up, they heard the ticking. All better now.

Was that under powertrain or the 3/36 b-b warranty?? Cause I am above the 3/36.
Mike
jpspaz 10-23-2007, 06:05 PM The powertrain warranty covers it.
mustangmwe 10-23-2007, 06:17 PM I have the ticking noise but only upon startup in the mornings, lasts about 5-10 mins...mines a 07 with 16k
jpspaz..I see you have a stingray too! good stuff man..
jpspaz 10-24-2007, 08:35 AM Have them check it anyway. It could be a hairline crack that closes up as the metal heats and expands. I had to leave mine at the dealer for a few hours to let it cool down so they could hear the noise upon start up. It worked and they replaced both manifolds as I mentioned earlier in this post.
