: New "OEM look" lower grill

I ordered this grill in the winter from Dan Moore and finally got around to installing it. They are custom made and powder coated. He actually took my original one back because I neglected to mention that I had a license plate

I was going for the stock look and I'm very happy with the way it looks. Not too flashy, but to me it looks OEM. Let me know what you think:

Sorry about the quality of the pics - I need a new camera.

Edit - Here's what it looked like before:

Thanks for all the responses. It was only about $60 or so shipped - not sure if the price went up by now though.

I'm only sorry that I waited so long to put it on. I always felt that the lower grill was a big gaping hole.

My powder-coated lower grill is now rusting. :(

What are my options here? Sand it down to the metal and use rustolium and clear coat?

I sent a PM to Dan so hopefully I will get a response.

I thought it was platic??

You don't need to sand it down to use Rustoleum. The anti-Rust agents in the Rustoleum paint will fix the rust as long as it's not too thick. If it is too thick, you can just scrape it down with a screwdriver before painting.

That's a bit surprising?? A quality powder-coat should last a LONG time before rusting. I like the look though.

Agreed- powdercoating, done properly, should NOT be rusting. Let us know how he follows up.

Otherwise, it looks great and offers some much needed protection against road debris for the expensive stuff (rad, transmission cooler, a/c condenser) in behind there. I'd like to put something behind my grille to keeps rocks and stuff out. I lost a transmission cooler on a dodge ram 2500 to a piece of kicked up steel on the interstate and it was mucho-expensivo.

A lower insert was the first thing I added after I saw how unprotected the radiator was. $20 ( over 2 years ago) from the Grille Guy at Ebay, 16 gauge aluminum perforated insert.

for a DIY project, you've got it narrowed down. but after sanding it down, use a commercial grade anti-rust inhibitor, most body shops can recommend a particular brand or type.

since you're in LI, give these guys a call:

i have friends in the industry, import tuning mostly, who continues to have them do custom powdercoating work. from roll cages, wheelie frames, valve covers, etc.. give them a try.

For such a small piece I doubt it is worth having a pro do it when I can just use a can of spray paint for a few bucks but thanks for the link as I may have other projects that require a pro.

I'm really surprized that it rusted as it just sits on the front of the truck - perhaps rocks / pebbles chipped away at it?

If done right, Powder Coating doesn't "chip". I've had Powder Coated Nerf Bars and I had to scratch them bad enough to cause a dent before any steel was visible and still there were dents that had no steel showing. Also, keep in mind that I'm referring to dents caused from high-centering on rocky surfaces so I don't see how a rock could possibly "chip" it unless it's a shoddy Powder Coat job done on it.

Mine did the same. Very poor quality powder coating. Last week I removed mine and painted it.

Looks like I'll go that route as well. Any sugguestions on brand of paint? I typically use Duplicolor.

Thanks.

Dan sent me an e-mail this morning saying he will send me out a new grill.

Thumbs up for a good seller. :)

Did you ever receive your new grill? I love that grill, but of course don't want to have to replace it within a short period of time. Haven't found any place else that has that type of grill.

Dan came correct and I just received the replacement grill this week! :D

I sent him an e-mail asking what I can do to prevent this from rusting but have not heard back as of yet. The powder coat is glossy so I am tempted to just use a flat black spray paint on it that will prevent any future rust. The stock upper plastic grill has a matte finish.
