: New brakes & rotors

Had to take my armada in for inspection this morning. I passed. they told me that I barely passed with my breaks & rotors. I have a 2004 that as backing out of my driveway this AM to get inspected, I looked down and it read 79,999 miles on the odometer.

Question, should I buy after market brakes & rotors? If so, any recommendations on brand, place to get it (like online order) and costs?
Or take it in to the Nissan dealership and have them do it and free up my time. Either or does not make a difference, just I want a good set at a decent mid way price, not top end and high dollar. Its my hunting vehicle, not a racing speed demon.

thanks,
Steve

If it were me, I would price out the difference between the newer OEM pads and rotors and the ones Burtman carries. Like you, I don't need much and spending for something like Brembo would be overspending because I'd just get them dirty and cruded up anyway. I would just need them to last and I know the ones that Burtman carries are better but am not sure what the cost difference is.

yea, that was my next question to see if anyone had experience yet with these from Burtman's.

Burtman's Ceramic/Metallic brake pads & cross drilled rotors?

Curious to hear if anyone has bought these items from Jason and if so, how are they working out for you? I need to get new brakes & rotors all the way around so shopping and looking for positive experiences.

I have been wondering about these myself. I am planning on getting an RV at some point and I didn't know if these would improve my braking ability.

i think you should get it from the Nissan dealer. The reason is because you probably get a warranty on them...so if anything happens you didn't lose your money

Finally some good results! The power slot are like the brembos.

You can find the Power Slot rotors here: http://www.buybrakes.com/powerslot/apps-Nissan%20SUV.html

And EBC pads here: http://www.buybrakes.com/ebc/pad-apps-Nissan.html

Did you have the warranty rotor swap done? If you did, then I"d just get new pads and have the rotors turned. Other than that, It should be fine. You can get Nissan pads, or you can get ceramic pads from many sources. I've never had a problem with various brands of ceramic pads from different makers. I'd also do it yourself. It is easy to do with basic tools like a set of wrenches. ;)

Anything like.....
Its basically idiotproof. Two bolts hold a caliper on, pads are snapped in. Bleed the brakes or use a clamp to compress the piston, and then back on. There isn't any way to mess them up. They have designed brakes to be idiot proof because they are so vital. If you can change a tire, you can change yoru brakes. The only thing a warranty could cover is a warped turned rotor, maybe. I don't think they will cover this though, just their labor and new parts. So, basically, if you pay a dealer to do your brakes, you are wasting your money always. If you don't feel you can change a tire, then get them done at Midas or somewhere that has pads for life. They will probably tell you they can't turn the rotors and ask you to buy new ones. Again, the dealer will probably do the same. In the end, do it yourself and save $300, midas save $150 vs. dealer charges and they will work fine. ;)

Do NOT get cross drilled rotors. They do nothing to improve braking but they do make rotors prone to cracking and catastrophic failure. No rotor manufacturer will warranty drilled rotors for cracking. They are made mostly for shows and for race vehicles with uber rotors so large they won't crack like 911 and Corvette Z06.

If you want better than stock rotors, get slotted or just get a good maker like Baer or Brembo. As for pads, most are as good or better than stock if you get ceramic. They need to meet minimum requirements to perform as good as stock to be called OEM replacements.

In the end, unless you swap to a big brake package, you shouldn't notice any difference, good or bad, over stock, if the new setup is doing its job, unless you decide to autocross or track race your Armada. In this case, they big brake package will help, but not on the street.

I've sold many of this same setup to Armada and Titan owners, same brakes.

Many buy them to replace warped stock rotors, which gives you the shakes when hitting the brakes. I recommend the drilled/sotted combo. Other benefits include better stopping power, and since they are cadnium plated, much less rust.

Here you guys can read about some others using these same rotors and pads:

Hmmmm....I'm looking into brakes as well..will love to get the stoptech brake kit..but I cannot use that for winter ..I'm leaning towards the powerslot..only thing I hear about them are good..

Any suggestions???

i've always stuck with powerslot rotors/EBC greenstuff pads. i've had this combo on all of my cars and have never been disappointed. with the exception of the 03 V6 accord getting Hawk pads which is now available for our trucks.

stay away from those slotted/drilled rotor combos, especially the ones being sold on ebay.. waste of money and will crack and warp prematurely from daily driving usage. another great option would be the Brembo OEM blank rotors if you don't want to go with the powerslots. can't go wrong with either one.

check out www.buybrakes.com when you get the chance. i paid about $520 shipped for my setup last fall.

Which rotor do you recomend? the cryo or the regular one??? Do I need to go with the cryo??

stay with the slotted or OEM blanks. unless you plan on taking the truck to some type of road course every weekend, then the cyroed rotors would be a nice option. but for NY daily driving, its not needed. the extra money saved can towards the pads.. EBC, Axxis, Hawk.

Are we talking about the DP61776 from EBC? Some websites are saying to use the DP61698. I'm guessing that's pre-recall ('04)?

I think you mean TSB, not recall. There was not any brake recall.

I'm rechecking EBC's website and I think the DP61776's are the way to go - right:confused:

On the other hand, the 7000 series (DP71776) is only $10 more and sounds even stronger.

Hmmm.

There is a huge difference! If you are out of warranty, Nissan pays for recalls. YOU pay for TSBs. Sure whatever, DUH, duh.

Ok.

I am thrilled you have retained that kernel of information. :urthebest Now, do you know why the brake pads are different on different websites?

Never mind. I don't need to know that badly.

Well, I had the front EBC's pads put in on Friday. I usually do this myself but we're preparing for a move so I couldn't.

Well, I'm getting some really nice squealing from the front when I'm light on the brakes. It goes away when I'm on them hard and when I'm off the brakes.

I dunno. It's brakes. There isn't that much to do. They did cut the rotors (they're the newer version) and I bedded the pads.

Hmmm.

I wouldn't get the cyro on the Armada, but I guess some folks do since they're selling them :)

just an update, I had the installers check their work and they couldn't find anything wrong :( The squeel seems like it's getting better so maybe more miles will fix it.

I've run EBC pads on several vehicles and have had that same squeal. I have EBC slotted and dimpled rotors on an Xterra and had some issues with the EBC pads that were on there. I recently pulled them and replaced them with Axxis pads. Now, no more squeal and just as good braking ability.

Yeah, I figure I'll try them out for a few months and see what happens. If by then I'm still having trouble I'll go ahead and pull them. Maybe someone will take them for half off. Hopefully it'll get better or it'll stop bothering me :)
