: Wassup with the brakes???
armadadd 09-27-2007, 01:12 PM Ok this is the story with my breaks. after going on a bumpy road then try to use the brake and stop the brake pedal would judder, it makes grinding noises like for example when stepping on it feels like abs going, then the brake light on the dash come on, and the car does not stops. After I shut the car off and restart it back to normal happened twice almost running pplz over. What seems to be the problem? Can I sue Nissan if I do get into an Accident?
Had the serviced for new rotors 2 yrs ago, new brake pads in 5 months.
Thanks For the input
Kailo 09-27-2007, 01:31 PM Check your Brake fluid level...I had same problem last month felt like the brake pedal was juddering under my foot with the grinding noise. There was an earlier post about this that says to top off brake fluid level. I did this and it has not happened since....

BlakSpyda 09-27-2007, 01:49 PM That happened to me once. I took it in and found out I needed breaks. Others have reported the same thing and after shutting off and restarting, never to happen again. Since it happened twice, I would take it in.
Don't forget about your E-Brake too. If you get into a jam again, you may need it in addition to cutting the engine. Like Spyda said, I'd have it looked at.
So... I just had the same problem this afternoon.
Was rolling up to stop sign downtown when, all of sudden, it felt like I was stopping on loose gravel - that grindy, juttering feeling... kind of like what happens when you skid on loose gravel. The 'mada stopped after I gently applied the brakes (I tried not to grind too hard). I pulled over right away, noticed the 'brake' light was on, applied, then unapplied the e-brake, and nothing happened. I turned the 'mada off, let it sit for a few seconds, then started it up again with no problem. I drove all the way home for lunch, then back to work with no problem.
Weird!!
Here are the related stats:
- 2005 'mada with "baby brakes" at purchase
- Dealer put "big brakes" on second half 2005
- This weird 'gravel' sensation happened two months ago while driving on a steep grade (no towing involved). I actually thought I hit the brake and gas at the same time (have big feet), and thought nothing of it
- 30 seconds before this most recent incident, I turned VDC OFF
Any thoughts? Oh, and the 'mada was just in the shop having a lub, oil, filter, tire rotation, and recall performed two weeks ago - no mention of break pad replacement.

BlakSpyda 04-01-2008, 09:42 AM Posted in another thread that the ABS Module may require replacement if it happens again!
scr38 04-01-2008, 12:20 PM This is a problem with the programming of the ABS controller. If you are under warranty Nissan will reprogram it free, out of warranty they will probably charge one hour shop time.
The dealer can check for error codes with the Consult. The code for this problem is 1179.

Thanks a bunch... to both scr38 and BlakSpyda. I'm still under the "pay $50 extended warranty", so I'll give the stealer a call.
Thanks again!

can i asked someone who can do the 2*AT to reprogram it since the have the program or do i really have to go to the dealership?

The Consult is necessary to do this. So a trip to the dealer will probably be necessary.
Cipher and other similar programs can't do it.

Took the 'mada to the stealership yesterday... with scr38's description of the ABS controller and code. The service guy took my written explanation and when I picked my ride up, this is what the tag read:
"Unable to verify - ABS ECM not up to date - Reprgram
If problem persists will need further diagnosis"
I've driven with VDC OFF and ON since yesterday and cannot replicate the previous problem. Hopefully, they fixed it.
Thanks again!

BlakSpyda 04-11-2008, 08:16 PM They reprogramed the ABS ECM. Great! I guess I need to get of my butt and get it done then!

It really didn't take too long either Spyda! I'd bet if you timed it right, you could take it in and by the time you got done reading the morning paper - it'd be ready to go!
I just kept having these images of my 'mada not stopping, or grinding to a stop one of these days - firmly inserting by beautiful ride into the rear end of some Kia... so that kind of forced me to take it in.
Good luck.

aih1977 02-01-2009, 12:24 PM Recall Recall Recall i am having the same problem.
sinnerFA 02-05-2009, 12:56 PM I had the same issue... They are looking for the 1179 error code, but once you turn off the engine it will clear itself. In order for them to reprogram they wanted a positive error, so when it happened again I drove it straight to the Advance auto and had them pull the code... Printed it out and then provided it to the dealer. They then reprogrammed the ABS controller and haven't had the issue since. Good luck and hope everyhting works out for ya.
BlakSpyda 02-05-2009, 01:35 PM I have not had the brake problem since they performed a reprogram of the ECM based on the TSB.

ladipogi 04-06-2009, 08:09 PM Hello, I am currently experiencing this problem. First happened 2 weeks ago and just now it happened again. Can some one give me instruction on how can I pull out the code?
soflashrek 04-21-2009, 09:23 PM Happened to me today...51,143 miles..running at 65 brake light flicked then came on ....getting off at the nearest exit the left front felt like it was on icy gravel (not likely here in So Fla.)and metal on metal grinding noise....As there was no way to go directly to Nissan without traveling across town...stop and go rush hour all the way..I chose to pull her over shut her off... Brake light went off and brakes worked the final 30 miles home. FYI Just checked brake fluid and it is on the mark.... So I guess I have to wait for the next time to pull the 1179 code..right????
scr38 04-21-2009, 09:29 PM The 1179 code stays until it is cleared.
ladipogi 04-22-2009, 01:12 AM I took mine to the dealer and ofcourse got raped. Got charged 150 just to pull out the code and another 100 for an hour labor to reprogram the abs. I kept on fighting with the service writer that the 150 should have covered the reprograming but who wins? they have my armada and I need it fixed. Hope you have extended warranty.
yjk1975 07-11-2009, 05:58 PM I just came back from the dealer. I have a 2007 Armada LE, they said the update only applies to 2004-2006. I had the same issue happen yesterday. They checked for the code. It did throw the 1179 code. They cleared it, checked my brakes and nothing wrong. The notes did say that they adjusted the yaw sensor. Charged me $117. It also says that booster may need to be replaced. But not for sure because everything reads normal now. How hard is it to replace. Is it something I can do?
Smoke05 07-11-2009, 09:19 PM Hahaha! Adjusted the Yaw sensor, uh-huh, right.
Replacing the brake booster is not a handymans job, leave it to the pros.
BlakSpyda 07-12-2009, 12:17 AM Welcome to CA yjk1975!
yjk1975 07-12-2009, 12:41 AM Thanks, I've been around. I just haven't posted. The thing is, the dealer told me to forget about it unless it happens again. Because everything looks fine. I can't just forget about it because my wife and 2 year old son use the car everyday. I am seriously thinking about trading it in.

Our Armadas do have a yaw sensor. It is located under the console between the front seats. The yaw sensor, along with other sensors, sends signals to the brake computer system, and is part of the VDC. This system looks at several sensors and determines which wheel needs to be braked to help the vehicle recover from skids, loss of traction, etc.
Smoke05 07-12-2009, 01:26 AM I am fully aware of the yaw sensor, where it is, what it does, how it does it, but they can NOT be adjusted. It either works or it doesn't. Thanks for the "lesson".

Why will they charge you? You have a 2007 so it should be covered under 3yrs/36kmiles.
Like you, ours (2004) are being driven daily by my wife w/ the kids just for school and home and now with less than 55k miles the front struts are gone already, when using aircon the fan is making noise again and it sounds like the starter is messed up to or maybe I hope not the flywheel to top it off I have no extended warranty.
yjk1975 07-13-2009, 02:34 PM 2007 but 45000 miles. Out of warranty.
