I'm looking at different tires for Wifey's Murano and wanted to see what you guys think. I'm looking for wider than stock, at least as wide as the FX35, less than $150ea (if possible), agressive performance tread, good Wet performance, and longevity. I know that Michelin Cross Terrains are high on most lists, ShadyJC and some others are into the Infiniti FX arena, and Norcal05SE and some others work with tires daily so I wanted to see what you all have to say and what you like in an 18" rim on your other cars/SUVs before I start talking to tire shops.

I'm looking at 265/60-18 or a tad bit wider w/o going too much further.

Ideally, something along the Nitto NT450 line would be perfect but they do not come in 18". These are what I'm finding so far:

Goodyear Wrangler F1. Sweet but probably $$$$$.
http://www.goodyeartires.com/goodyeartireselector/display_tire.jsp?prodline=Wrangler+F1&mrktarea=Light+Truck&treadwidth=265&aspectratio=60&rimdiameter=18&sidewall=BSL

Yokohama AVID V4s. Nice price, awesome ratings, reviews, and feedback. (my favorite so far)
http://www.yokohamatire.com/TireIntro.asp?TireID=400

Yokohama AVS S/T. Getting a little $$$$ and I don't know if they're worth it.
http://www.yokohamatire.com/TireIntro.asp?TireID=7

I've looked at Kumho, Dunlop, Bridgestone, and Michelin and don't see anything that stands out.

What do you guys think??

check out the Falken Ziex S/TZ-01 tires; the 265/60/18 sized tires you've mentioned are available. i've used falken tires in the past ranging from 17s-19s and i was always satisfied with them. they're quiet, grip really tight, and their treadwear rating is exceptional.

Take a look at Hankook, I've heard very good things about those. I haven't paid attention to the 18" discussion, but in 20" and larger, others have gone with and are happy with Pirelli, BFG and Toyo. Myself, I'm running a set of Nittos (22").

I've run Falkens on two previous cars (Lexus GS300 and Lexus LX470) and from my experience, they start off great, but after 10-15K miles there is a significant increase in road noise.

Check out NissanMurano.org to hear opinions directly from Murano owners.

I lurk there every once in awhile..... I'm more interested in hearing from you guys and then will look over some FX forums w/ nissanmurano.org. You guys are already helping a ton.

man i wish you lived closer. i've got a set of fx45 20" wheels with tires that i pulled off a rig i put 22s on. they've got tires with way over half tread on em.

as for tires for your wheels, you could even go 275/60. i put the toyo open country H/T on my mother-in-laws RX330 and she loves em. nice and quiet, shes got about 30k on em now, probably that much left in em. check em out here: http://www.toyo.com/docs/tires/tires.asp?lpid=27483&name=Open%20Country®%20H/T&category=lgt-suv-truck

I realize my experience isn't based on the same size tire you're looking at, but I am not too fond of the Michelin cross terrains.... http://www.acuramdx.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=24488&perpage=15&highlight=michelins%20tires%20dry%20rot&pagenumber=1

Might want to check out the Goodyear Wrangler SilentArmor tires at tirerack.com. They are $151 per tire too! I know they probably aren't as "sporty" as you want, but read what others are saying, because that might work for you. http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Goodyear&tireModel=Wrangler+SilentArmor&partnum=66TR8WSAOWL&vehicleSearch=false&fromCompare1=yes&place=22

What's the size on the Murano wheels? 18x8? I wouldn't go wider than a 265.

Pops
11-28-2007, 09:59 AM
They're 18x7.5. The FX are 18x8. I've been assuming that wider might need a taller profile but I'm really thinking that the 265 should be just fine on the 7.5 too.

It wouldn't be the first time I've gone wider than I'm supposed too. I've pushed the limits on every stock wheel that I've replaced tires on. Long ago, I got tired of having my aftermarket wheels stolen all the time, even with 2 wheel locks per wheel. It's too inconvenient leaving the Wheel Key at home or drilling and carrying on my keychain.

Does anyone know anything about Nexen??? They are a Korean company and these look like they may be sweet.

How much do the fx 20's normally go for. I may in the future replace the tires on the Murano, and I have always liked the look of the FX tires.

Good luck with finding a tire for the Murano, Pops. I will probably have to dig this thread up some time in the future, when I need to replace mine.

Thanks Tony!! I'm starting pretty early. I still have plenty of time left but with several of us owning a Murano, I thought this would be cool to have on here. I drive ours like a Sports Car, I love the way it "scoots" so I'm looking for something that will support awesome cornering. The stock Goodyears are POS IMO.

put down the mouse and back away. 99% of the time the phrase "you get what you pay for" holds true, and never more so than with tires. we sell nexens at my store, and they are crap. i have more out-of-round nexens coming off the shelf than anything else. i'd run away from them.

Pops

I kinda figured the Nexens would go that way.

Anyone have an opinion about the Bridgestone Dueler H/P's?? I'm curious if they're near as good as the A/T Revo.

I'm with norcal and the Toyo's. I love my A/T's and they are always rated as good or better than the Nitto's. In fact I bought mine off of ebay from a company in Norman, OK. They were at least $300 cheaper than anyone else and customer service was outstanding. Here is their ebay store, if they don't have what you want just call them and they will get it for you. They carry almost any Toyo tire and have great prices.http://stores.ebay.com/LWM-Transportation-Enhancement

the nitto and toyo are actually owned by the same company. nitto is the less expensive version, for the most part. the toyo open country and the nitta tera grappler are the same tire inside, just the tread pattern is differnt. they are made on the same assy line even. most of the toyos have a "sister" in the nitto line.

Alright, I've narrowed my choices down to these two in a 265/60/18 w/ these prices locally.

Falken Ziex S/TZ-01 - $130ea - http://www.falkentire.com/stz01_sizes.html

Sumitomo HTR Sport H/P - $160ea - http://www.sumitomotire.com/theline/product.asp?c=per&id=38

I'm leaning harder towards the Sumitomo because of JC's comment and they have a 480 TWI where the Falken has a 420. One of the guys showed me the HTR Sport H/P on his LS1 Camaro Z28 and said he has close to 50k on them and the tread was still about 3/4 still left compared next to a new tire.

You guys are a TON of help. I had only 2 responses on the NissanMurano site that weren't near as helpful as this thread.
Thank You!!!!

the sumotomo tires are great. but i've also seen very good results with the falkens. we sell a version of that tire thats done pretty well. either way you wont regret it.

Due to availability here, I just finished ordering the Falken Ziexs. I'll put them on this Saturday and post some pics next week.

I was disappointed to find that the TWI on the Dueler H/P's is quite a bit lower. I found some Nitto NT404's for $140/ea but they are 285/50/18 which I'm pretty sure will reduce the turning radius and Wifey's patience, so I figure that I'm safer with the Falken as long as they don't get too noisey for her later.

Let me know how they turn out Pops! I will be needing to change the shoes on the MO soon too! I am sorry that I didn't put input into this thread. But I know nothing about tires! I know about all the other things but not the tire sizes and brands.

Pops
12-04-2007, 12:22 AM
Will do!!! That's why I thought this would be a good thread. Tires are always changing and different sizes require different brands and different prices.

http://www.tires-easy.com/start.html has been extremely helpful too. They have more selections than TireRack and provided the perfect shopping tool for comparing local shop prices. I made sure that I'm getting the same price from my favorite shop as ordering from that site and paying to have them Mounted and Balanced.

Again, thanks for your help guys!!!! I would've never looked at these w/o your suggestions.

Here's some pics of the Falken tires. It's been raining all day and still going so I decided not to wash the car first so please excuse the filthy dirt. The rain gave me a chance to push them hard while sliding around corners and they seem to handle every bit as well as the Stock Goodyears to me. I slammed the brakes from 40mph a couple of times and couldn't get them to slide or kick off the ABS.

They are the same width as the Armada's tires. I think they are a good fit, Wifey said "Those look HUGE" although I totally disagree and think that should've been the Stock size. They are barely unnoticeably taller but almost the same diameter as Stock but wider.

Falken Ziex S/TZ-01, 265/60-18 = $574.20 total paid OTD.

If this was my daily driver, I would've gone with the 285/50-18 Toyo Proxes from TD4L. I now have very little doubt that the Murano can handle that size and every tire shop I talked to said they are a great tire.

Just an update.... After about 10k on them they are wearing nicely with any treadwear hardly noticeable but wifey's complaining about road noise now. The Murano is thin skinned and poorly insulated so it does make a difference. I'm looking into some of the sound dampening products from a link on acsmall3's reply to this Sound Dampening thread below and am thinking that I may drop $120 to add some RAAMmat BXT sound insulation to the firewall floorboard and front doors to see if it helps. Fun stuff!!!! :D

Try a set of Yokohama Parada Spec X www.yokohamatire.com/tires/parada_specx.aspx (http://www.yokohamatire.com/tires/parada_specx.aspx)
they have worked great for me, smooth ride, all weather, and I only paid about $165 for 305/50/20, the smaller ones should be around $140:D
the only downfall is they are a directional tire but easily compare with the Nitto's

Pops

It's not worth me replacing the tires for because that'll be another $600. I figure the insulation might be worth a try since the Murano's skin is so thin anyway. But, I'll be keeping Hankooks and those Yokos in mind for the next time around. :D

Hey Bob, I'd be inclined to bypass the firewall floorboard, and just do the doors (all 4) and maybe the 1/4 panels.

In my experience, the carpet blocks quite a bit of the sound from below anyway. But those doors....they are essentially hollow shells that resonate and almost seem to amplify the sound from out side over certain surfaces (frequencies). I used Dynamat Xtreme on my old Acura MDX doors, and the change was drastic. Road noise much quieter, and my stereo sounded MUCH better.

Maybe if you have some left, go for the firewall, but I'd focus my efforts on those doors! ;)

Pops
06-09-2008, 03:52 PM
Ok, I'll start with the front doors first and then the side foot fenderwell area to see how that does for starters. I listened and alot of the sound was coming from the footwell area and I guess it could just be from the sides.
