I have a 2004 Armada with the off road package. It recently is having an issue starting. It will not fire or start unless I go through the gears in the automatic transmission shifter. Sometimes I have to do this several times and finally it will start.
It seems there may be a safety switch that isn't engaging until I go through the gears of the automatic transmission. Sometimes I can go several days with no problems and other days it happens everytime I kill the engine.
Has anyone experienced this? If so, please let me know the solution to repair. I have 56,000 miles and an extended warranty, hopefully the extended warranty will cover this..

The next time this happens look at the dash where the gear positions are indicated and see if the gear positions are reading out properly.
The sensor in the shifter sends the gear positions to the BCM, which then sends the signals to the dash gear position readout and also the tells the starting system which position the shifter is in. The engine won't start unless the selector is in P or N.
If the gear positions don't read correctly when the not starting problem this may indicate that the problem is with the sensor in the shifter.
Since you have been able to start after moving the shifter I think the problem is probably in the shifter sensor.

Thanks, I'll be sure and look to see if the indicator is correct. I have also read that connector 9 on the transmission could be corroded? Attached are jpegs discussing the problem. I crawled underneath and did a quick look and it doesn't appear corroded, although it is very difficult to tell without unplugging the connector, I tried to unplug but I can't get much leverage based on where it is located..

Sounds like a possible linkage issue.

Bad neutral safety switch. I think nissan call it inhibitor switch.
