: 13.1 MPG on my first tank of gas...
gregtay 01-02-2008, 08:56 PM Filled the 08 Armada up today and i am happy to report that i maanged 13.1 MPG (real math and the computer were the same.) That might sound bad.. but it is the same MPG i was getting on my 07 5.7L Tundra Crewmax... and that was after 6000 miles. So if tank number 1 is above 13 maybe it will improve a bit more as the motor breaks in. I read that some people are seeing "9-10 MPG:, and i was a bit worried... not worried anymore.
From reading the Titan forums, I'm starting to think that the 9-10 maybe coming from spark plugs starting to wear. We've also recently learned from a member over on CT that Gasoline is mixed differently in the winter time to evaporate better in the colder weather. More addidtives like Butane are added and hurt our MPGs a bit during the cold seasons.
armadadd 01-02-2008, 09:41 PM I'm getting about 9 MPG..mines is 05
norcal05SE 01-02-2008, 10:31 PM i average about 13 in mine. highway i get about 18.
gilbert88 01-02-2008, 10:59 PM 14.1 in my 08 with 2° and 18 highway ( I do hoon it tho!)

I tend to get about 11 or so which improves GREATLY with highway driving. The Armada does not like city driving.
You are correct that the gov mandated oxygenating the fuel in the winter to reduce emissions. However, you get worse milage so you use more gas. Good one guys
scotts08LE 01-02-2008, 11:23 PM i need the timing advance. getting around 13 in the city as well.
mojo2 01-03-2008, 01:23 AM gilbert88, did the 2 degree advance improve your mpg? I have 2,000 miles on my 08 LE and my computer hasn't moved from 13.4 mpg since I bought it. Maybe I'll try checking it manually just to make sure the computer is accurate. Although my driving is mixed, most of it is freeway, or country roads with very little stop and go.

I think i got 1 extra mpg city and 2 highway. The main difference was that if i accelerate hard, or shift gears and gun it i can maintain the 14 mpg. Whereas before, it used to drop to 11-12 mpg.
I never use D and always use 4. If im on a good stretch of road ill drop to 3 then shift it up around 4000rpm. If only there was a manual armada :(

D is overdrive and if you are not using it your gas mileage will suck. Some posters have done this by accident :)

I find 4 is more responsive and im getting 13+ per gallon.
D makes it struggle at lower speeds, and im sure its not an over drive, as that is usually a button on the shifter itself and keeps u in a gear longer AFAIK

4 is more responsive because it is a lower gear. D is 5th gear (overdrive) which keeps the revs lower and in turn saves gas mileage.
Think of a 10 speed bike - when you have it in 4th gear you have to peddle harder in order to get the bike to move, in 5th gear it gets easier. That extra effort results in more work for the engine and in turn more gas consumption.
An automatic will down shift if it needs to for more power but there will be a lag associated with it (unlike a manual transmission).
I am not saying you are wrong for driving in 4th, but if you want better gas mileage you should drive in D.

WOW! traded the Tundra for an Armada? What was wrong with the Tundra? I'm planning on purchasing one soon.

The interior. I've heard a couple complaints from Tundra owners, I don't see the problem. Plus, he prefers an SUV rather than a Pickup.
RedTitanLE over on ClubTitan is an awesome source for info on the Tundra. She has owned a few Titans and traded for a Tundra on this last round. She can tell you all the pros and cons, I would send her a PM over there if I were you. Personally, I like the new Tundra from what I've seen of it but I wouldn't pay that sticker for any truck.

There is nothing "wrong" with the Tundra... I just discovered that i am not a truck guy... I have always owned 4Runners but i needed something to pull my 7K boat and didn't think that a real "truck" would be all that different ... i was wrong. It was huge (makes the Armada feel small:)) and the ride of an unloaded bed gets old... but for a truck it did ride quite nice... but of course nothing like and SUV.
My Tundra had an MSRP of $46K (07CM4x4Limited5.7w/nav) and i picked it up for about $41. I picked up my Armada for $42... so price wise in real dollars they are about equal... but that Armada has a ton more value.
Here's some things i didn't like (again.. most are just personal preference coming from a guy use to driving 4Runners vs. trucks)
1) The interior need work. Feels very "American". Toyota used plastic for everything.. and in most cases just painted the plastic. The dash and door panels are hard plastic that have been painted black. Rub anything against them and you rub off the paint leaving a grey mark. They also used a bunch of silver painted trim pieces which to me look cheap (literally looks like someone just grabbed a can of spray paint and painted them.) The seats (I had the sweet RedRock leather) are huge and very rugged... but at a price. they are so stiff that on a long drive your butt and legs get sore. The seats just don't have any give to them (but i have a feeling they will still look new in 5 years!)
2) Technology.. okay, so it's a truck, so i shouldn't expect much, but again, this was a $46K truck. the nav system is very outdated... it works, but the Nissan system is more of what i expected. The Toyota NAV is no different than the one in my 2003 4Runner... no advancements. It's basically a radio and basic NAV system (w/Bluetooth.) Nothing more. It's not tied into the car... so no climate control info, MPG info, vehicle setting info, etc. Just a radio and nav.
3) New model year... just like the Titan/Armada in 2004 the Tundra has had a few issues along the way. Mine was close to perfect, but my tailgate was just starting to fail (come apart) and I had the "diesel" noise (basically it sounds like a diesel truck, esp when cold. It's a common issue.. but not really an issue... Toyota says its normal. Some Tundras were louder than others... mine tended to be on the loud side. This was more of an issue when it's cold out or the motor is cold... just something you learn to live with (my Armada on the other hand is super quiet:)).
4) Again.. for me, it was just the simple fact that i didn't like driving around a huge (and i mean HUGE) 20' truck. Parking it was a pain (rear view camera is a MUST... saved me so many times!)
Things i liked about the Tundra: It looks sweet! I still think the truck i sold was one of the best looking trucks around. The motor/tranny is the best... period. The Toyota 5.7/6sp kicks everything on the market.. including the 5.6. The tranny is super smooth and very very smart. Tons of power all the time and the MPG wasn't too bad. 401 ft/# of torque under your foot makes for a very big smile. With the boat loaded up the truck rode great (much better ride with a load) and the Tundra would rocket up hills at 80 MPH towing our 7000# boat... didn't even know the boat was back there. If i needed a truck there is no question i would go out and pick up another Tundra.
So that does bring up the new Sequoia... which is the new Tundra in SUV form. We were really excited for the new Sequoia to show up and my dealer had already set aside his first black/RedRock one for us. When it showed up 2 weeks ago we went to check it out and i was really disappointed... they kept the same Tundra interior (they made a few very minor improvements), same Tundra technology (lame), added a few things (adjustable IRS/ride height, rear a/c, Sonar Cruise control, added a "cooled seat" option to the heated seats) and raised the price tag to $59K. Yikes! The Sequoia does drive better than the Armada... more power, smoother susp, tighter turning radius, etc.) but in our opinion the 08 Armada was the easy winner. The Sequoia looks like a mini-van or a Durango. The Armada looks mean and very off road capable (reminds me of my 4Runner) and the Armada interior is comfy, full of technology, and looks like and Infiniti ;). Oh.. and the Armada MSRP was $52.. we picked it up for $42.... so add that to the equation an it was a no brainer.
In a perfect world i would find a way to shove Toyota's 5.7/6Sp into my Armada:).
ShadyJC 01-03-2008, 01:31 PM My QX56 shows 14.3 MPG on the computer in mixed driving since we've had it. I have 2* advance and Volant intake.
nyc2005armada 01-03-2008, 09:01 PM I am getting a rating of 14.6 per gallon, that is for both city and highway, and yes it hates city driving. I can't wait to get my 2* advance done.
JARMADA4U 01-05-2008, 07:47 PM hi pops my 05 mada has 33,000 miles and i think iam getting about 10 miles or less !i just purchase my armada with 31,000 miles on it so i just had it about 3 weeks. when i drive i can see the fuel gauge go down so fast i get angry can a new set of spark plugs help me get better gas miles?i also have 22 inch wheel which i can image it not helping matters.i did the air box mode you did so i can get more air but that doesnt help!do u think a k&n filter will help?also what kind of plugs they put on my o5 mada?arent cars today have 100,000 miles plugs?please help me
thank you
I just replied to your PM. Change the Plugs first. Plenty have gone out before 40k and it's cheap and easy enough to do, just make sure to stay with Platinum Plugs.
MajBlue07 01-05-2008, 09:56 PM I've only done the 2 degree advance on mine and I CONSISTANTLY get 14.whatever. The only reason I'm so emphatic about the 14 is that even when I think I am being really well behaved with gas pedal, I still get 14...oh well...14 it is.
Maybe when I get my intake, I will finally break the 15 mpg marker!

If I got only 15 on the rental we had, we wouldn't have bought ours. I drive with a real light foot (I hammer it for testing purposes only) and get around 18. I want to see close to 20 for highway which is where we usually take the truck (2 degree advance done, looking at CAI, maybe exhaust). I topped it up yesterday and thought I was getting a great mpg average, based on the trip odometer vs the fuel gauge, until my wife told me she "put some gas in a few days ago." D'oh!
My 00 2WD suburban got 20-21 mpg on the freeway. I get around 20 in my 06 2WD sierra...
BTW, based on advice found on here, advancing that timing and resetting the ECU really woke the truck up. The truck launches really hard now and has left its mark at a few intersections. Testing purposes only of course...
mgbrillo 01-15-2008, 03:02 AM i have always used D on driving my mada (06 LE 2WD). Weather may be a factor - im at Houston so we're not getting any cold-er here. anyway, I thought mine sucks at around 12-14mpg on average - city. Anybody school me on using the 1-2-3-4? I kinda lost the manual of the mada, I thought I wouldnt use it since the mada seems to be doing great since we got it 04/2006. Now this got me thinking if I am driving the vehicle right - on the correct and proper way, specially the use of the correct gear on city driving (this is my first automatic vehicle, I got a 350z and before that, an RX-8 both manual - then my wife got hers - an auto c230 which has D and a +/-).
The 2007 Owner's Manual is avail here: http://www.nissanusa.com/apps/techpubs

Using 'D' with the Cruise Control is going to get you the best MPG's possible.
ArmadaThunder 01-15-2008, 01:20 PM Whenever I think about the gas mileage I just think how sexy I look in both of my rigs! :noworries
