How do I play burned DvDs?

As the title reads I can't seem to figure out how to play burned DVDs. I have a 2005 QX56 (I figure the DvD player is the same in the Armadas as well) Yes it's the STOCK unit. I've tried searching for

DVD-R
DVD+R
DVD RW
ISO
MKV
Burned DVD

I have not found anything related to this topic. Can the stock unit play a burned DVD? All my movies on my computer are .mkv files...I'm guessing they need to be converted to an ISO or some other type? If you know the answer to this question please help and also recommend a good file converting software and burning software...I've tried:

Wondershare DVD Creator
UltraISO
Solid MKV to DVD converter

with no luck on any of them...

If it matters, the discs i'm using are DVD+R discs...figured I'd throw that in there. And the QX gives a message of "DVD load/eject error"

DVD+r aren't really compatible with older DVD player. Dvd-r is the "standard". Did u try playing a copy DVD that you know works in the QX? Mkv files are like a zip file for audio, video and subs all in one. It is most likely a blu-ray rip. I believe Nero v10+ does this conversion on the fly. I would also use dvd-r disc. Almost all if not all DVD player read this format. To burn this straight without conversion would require DL disc.

BTW.. I don't have a qx so I can't tell you it will play copy disc or not.

I seem to recall some old discussions of this that there was some sort of stupid anti-piracy thing built-in that would only allow you to play factory formatted discs.

Generally I get Blu-Ray rips...somehow ...and they always come in .MKV format...

I'll have to go out and grab some DVD-R Discs and give that a go...I'm currently converting the .MKV file to a .VOB (Wondershare VCU says it's the format for DVD players so I'll see how that goes). I'll give feedback about it whether it works or not. Thanks so far.

Ok I was able to figure it out. Wondershare Video Converter Ultimate can change the MKV or any other file type to a .VOB which can play in the QX only if burned on a DVD-R disc.


So let's recap...to play movie files burned to disc:

File must be .VOB

Disc type must be DVD-R
