transmission cooler lines busted! I need to fill it.

my transmission cooler line going from the radiator to the trans. on the passenger side busted and spilled fluid all over the road. I need to put a new hose in and fill it to the correct level. I've read about fluid changes and people marking levels in buckets and, but my concern is that I have no idea how low I am right now.

Can anyone give me any pointers on how to get my system up to the level it needs to be?

Should I be concerned that I could overfill it without doing current measurements?

Should I just have it towed to a shop somewhere ($$$) rather than do it myself? I usually do my own work but have never had a trans hose bust on any car...
