Well, I'm pretty sure I solved my power steering issue on my 07...Rack and pinion. When I pulled in the driveway tonight I heard a knock and felt it in the steering wheel. After I stopped, I moved the wheel back and forth about 2 or 3 inches either way quickly from center. Sure enough it knocked both ways.
From what I understand the racks on these vehicles and Titans are known to be bad. So with that, does anyone have a suggestion for a better replacement other than OEM? I mean, I don't want to end up with the same problem a year or two later. Would a reman be a problem?
I have not checked them yet. Oddly enough, I started the truck this morning and the clunk seemed a bit worse. Drove it about a mile and it stopped on my 15 mile trip to work. the previous owner had the lower control arms and ball joints recently replaced (Bolts still look brand new).
My boss wanted to look at it and the clunk was totally gone and we could not reproduce it. The lower ball joints did look dry. Now I'm at a loss for what this could be. CV joints, Strut pop, etc??
I'm taking it in Saturday for it's first oil change, so I'll have them take a look at the rack bolts since I don't have a lift and this big bastard won't clear my garage door. Thanks for reminding me about the bolts.
I get a clunk from my rack because the bushing where the two bolts go in on the drivers side is bad. The whole rack will move when you turn the wheel without moving the truck. I have tried to find a replacement bushing but have had no such luck.
I was going to replace mine too but I ended up replacing the entire rack.
There's a thread over on TT and the OP mentioned what size sleeves he used and where they were purchased from.
When I removed the rack bolts, the metal sleeves and whatever piece of rubber bushing was left literally fell right out.
