Warning, disturbing images...

In the middle of the night, the top of this Maple tree broke off and fell about 20 feet, landing on top of my 2011 Platinum with 4,000 miles.

I work as a paramedic and it was parked at our station overnight. We think the tree probably had a crack in it from the winter. As the leaves got bigger from the spring the weight increased and with the constant rain we have had in Massachusetts this week, it just gave away. It wasn't even windy on Wednesday morning.

I do have full insurance, but after hearing what they need to do to it to fix it, I'm not sure I want it back "fixed." The adjuster and the dealership's body shop, say that the roof has to be cut off and replaced as well as at least one of the back quarters. The damage to the quarter panels was indirect damage from the impact on the top. The tree never touched the sides of the vehicle.

I know, it was like the energy from the impact went right around the windows and exited out the bottom. I was hoping they would total it, because my insurance would then replace it with a new vehicle--but its not looking that way right now. It's hard to know where the cutoff point is on a $50,000 vehicle. If "fixed" I just worry about everything from the power lift-gate, to the side airbags, to the auto-leveling suspension (which was mashed from the weight of the tree) to the overall structural integrity of the vehicle.

They will not total it cause the chassis was not bent. It will be cutoff from the A pillar to the ending of the rear glass area. Cutting out a rear quarter panel is actually a lot better than banging it out and using body filler. Most auto body shops do this, it is way cheaper in the long run, the welds are then grinded down and then body filled in to smooth out the body. Think of it like this, ask the body shop to lower the roof line, then you will have a one off custom Armada with a lower roof line.
