Can I program a new key/key fob if I order one?

2010 Nissan Armada Platinum 4x4, came with only 1 key/fob combo. I looked up the part number and can order a refurbished one for $60. It comes with a blank key that will have to be cut. Figure I will just take it to a locksmith to be cut. I have read the procedure for programming the fob and appears to be something I can do without issue.

Is there something I am missing?
Is this able to be done with one original key fob?
When I reprogram the additional fob do I have program my original one again or just the additional one?
Does the plastic end on the key have a chip in it or is it all in the fob?

Sorry for all the questions. I appreciate all info you guys can give me.

Here is the link of the instructions I am going off of.

If I'm not mistaken, you can program it to open the doors and tailgate, but not start the engine. A locksmith with the right programming software is needed to encode the chip that is imbedded in the key to your car.

Yea Campfamily is right, you need to get it programed by dealer or a qualified locksmith. My Infiniti dealer wants 240 bucks in labor to program, i laughed and currently not worried about the second key at this time.

Thank you guys for the info. I will have to call around. It’s my wife’s daily but when we are together I normally drive. So that’s fine but she keeps the key in the purse. So every time I drop her off at the door or something the things starts beeping. Hopefully I can find someplace reasonable to program. I figured the dealer would be quite expensive.

I am assuming it will still be cheaper for me to purchase the refurbed fob and have it programmed then to go through the dealer for everything. But will have to call to find out.

A competent locksmith should be able to do it for you for way less than the dealer.

Well just to update, I ordered a new fob and key blank of eBay. Called my local locksmith and he is going to cut and program it for $50 which I didn’t think was too bad. I will keep everybody informed as to how it goes.

Received the new fob and key blank. I tried to get the fob programmed myself but I apparently don’t have the key timing or whatever to get the vehicle into the learn mode. So I will just have to wait until I can get to the locksmith I guess.
