Auto four wheel drive question

I am curious.

While driving my '05 Armada LE today I decided I wanted to see how the Auto4WD system felt when it engaged. I just got the vehicle and live in Texas so opportunity to do so is few and far between. I disabled VDC and hit the gas on a wet road. It engaged exactly how I expected except, it was very smooth. I recently drove my fathers '06 Expedition which also had an auto 4 wheel drive system and everytime it engaged(on snowy roads in CO) there was a definite jerk and jolt as it engaged. My question is: Do the systems differ fundamentally? How does each work? I've searched the net trying to find the mechanics of each and can't seem to find anything.

Thanks in advance. I've been all through these forums looking for info and each of you seems very knowledgeable. I'm glad to be here and even more glad to finally have an Armada!

It is one of the smoothest out there. I have tried this many times on Armada's and Qx56's. Normally every time it rains and I am outside in a 4x4 I will try it.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem!!

the QX and Armada is electronically engage so you won't feel much of a push like the Expedition

Hmmmm, it makes me love my Armada even more. So if Nissan's system is electronic, what is the expedition?

I could be wrong but I think the difference might be in the hubs locking.

Nissan's hubs are always locked so our entire drivetrain is always spinning, even when in 2wd. The only difference between 2wd and 4wd is whether the transfer case is engaged or not.

The part I could be wrong about is that I think that Ford might possibly still be using auto-electronic locking hubs on the front wheels. If they are, that's where the clunking and thumping comes from.

Either way, keep in mind that our 4WD system was derived from the Skyline GTR which had one of the all-time best AWD systems ever made. This 4WD system ROCKS!!!!!

I have an 05 Armada and I have noticed that when I put it into 4wheel auto, after traveling some distance there is a sudden jolt while driving. I have no leaks in the transfer case and its not the kind of jolt that feels fine its as if there is pending doom coming my way and its going to be costly. Could it be a tooth missing on the gearing in the transfer case would like to find out before getting the dealers to do a check on the system. Cheers
