Rear diff junk on magnet

So this weekend I decided to change the lube on the rear diff on our 13 Armada Platinum. I changed the diff lube on my 11 Titan at around 5k miles as I recall and it looked way dirtier than I thought it would. Folks online said that was normal and would clear up. So since we traded the Titan on the Armada, I figured I would do the rear end this weekend at 2900 miles. This picture is what came off the magnet.

Amsoil Severe Gear 75W-90 went back in. When I do the oil change at 3750, I will change the front diff, transfer case and do a dump and fill on the trans. I've got more 75W-90 for the front, Matic D for the t-case and Matic S for the trans already. If it is like the Titan, the front and trans will look great and the t-case will look horrible.

I just figured folks might like to see what it looked like even this early.

Wow!!!! I did my rear diff at 90,000 and did not see half that. Do you do allot of towing or
4-wheeling ??

It's got 2900 miles on it and has gone from Indianapolis, IN to Cincinnati, OH several times and runs around town. It hasn't done any towing and no off roading. The worst road it has seen was 2 miles of gravel.

Like I said, my 11 Titan was just as bad when I did it. I am changing them all early to get the break in metals out ASAP.

Are you sure it is all metal particles? I think Nissan puts molybdenum Disulfide in the lube for break in. It will look very dark like that. Several members have seen material like that when the original lubricant is drained.

The first time I changed the fluid in my diff, my shop rag looked exactly like that.

The second time I changed it, it looked much better.

Nothing wrong with it.

I had the same amount show up on my rear magnet every 5k. At 25k the dealer switched me over to 75-140. At 50k the dealer swapped in a new rear. Said the bad diffs made metal pea sized residue balls on magnet until failure. A good diff stopped all but half rice grain amounts of residue level deposits at 25k. Bad diffs are dana's made in mexico, un heat treated. On replacement rear, used 80-90 for 5k, then swapped to 85-140 with Lucas additive. By 15k, rear diff was only making 1/2 grain of rice worth of residue per change.

This sounds crazy to me..F4n4 I read your response to another post on diffs. this is a 2013 suv, I have always been told Dana's are the best out there..I just Traded my 190,000 1997 4x4 Expedition I towed with and run to texas 18 hour drives 2 times a year and the Diff fluids looked great very little color, Guess I need to check out my New 2010 armada model if this problem is common. I understand the Heat treated part but kinda seems like they might be setting the gear sets up tight from factory..???

Danas

When I was growing up, Danas were bulletproof. But Nissan Danas and other Danas (Dodge) that were made in Mexico bankrupted Dana with replacement costs. Once the residue on the magnet turns shiny, you have worn through the the coating into the untreated gear metal. Wear will accelerate at that point. On my new diff, I got 1/2 pea size lump of residue at 5k. At 10k (75-140 w/lucas) I was down to 1/2 a grain of rice residue and dirty/black oil at drain. At 16k the fluid was almost clear and there was only a dusting of metal residue on the magnet. I use 75-140 full synthetic with lucas additive. During the last period, I towed a boat from Texas to Lake Erie and back. So I am satisfied with the rear diff performance now. Go to any Nissan dealer and you will probably a stack of bad rear diffs behind the shop!
