How to Check for Cracked Manifold Visually

Hi Everyone,

I just got a 2014 Armada with 55,000 miles on it. I recently discovered the infamous problematic manifold cracking issue which I know is covered up to 8 yr/80,000 miles (so I am covered).

Most just take it to a Nissan dealer to have it diagnosed. However: #1 ) Doesn't the dealer have an incentive to NOT find them cracked since they'd have to do the work for free? #2 ) I'd like to see if they're cracked myself to avoid an over $100 diagnosis fee.

I hear a light ticking noise on both sides when the engine is running cold or hot, but I don't know if it's normal or if I have cracked manifolds.

So is it possible to see them from the engine compartment, from underneath, or from the wheel well if I take off the wheel well shroud?

Thank you in advance!
-Tony

The dealer doesn't do the work for free, they will get compensated from Nissan for doing the work.

Campfam, thanks for your reply about the dealer getting paid by Nissan. That should help with my fear of them having an incentive of not finding anything.

Does anyone have any input on my question about how to visually check for the cracked manifolds? I was looking around underneath and I'm wondering if the heat shields need to be removed to see.

Thanks!!

Can you provide a link etc. that indicates Nissan will cover the manifold for 8 years/80,000 miles?

Look in your warranty booklet or just call a local nissan dealer. It’s emissions warranty. They will be able to tell you directly.

Thanks for the info. I didn't realize it was covered under the emissions warranty, but now I know.

Unfortunately, the heat shields on the OE exhaust manifolds have to be removed to determine if the manifolds are cracked.

Nissan somewhat did a band-aid fix by adding additional gussets on the runners of the manifolds. Since you have a later year 1st gen, I’m sure the exhaust manifolds on your ‘14 have the gussets.

The 1st gens (Titan, Armada, QX56) are also known to have very audible fuel injectors. The ticking sounds can sometimes be mistaken for the dreaded cracked manifolds.

Cracked manifolds usually make more noise on acceleration. You can hear a crack leak when cold with a little goose of the gas.

That's interesting. Do you know what year they started adding the gussets?

From everything I've read, these are the symptoms of cracked manifolds. Is this correct? Do all of these symptoms always show up? Are there other symptoms?

  • Ticking sound, heard from outside of car
  • Consistent exhaust smell in vents
  • Service Engine light
  • Will fail smog test
  • Noticeable loss of engine power
