I just had my gibson exhaust installed but i think the muffler shop only took from the muffler down to the exhaust outlet and replace it with a gibson muffler and a 3" pipe and weld nice exhaust tip on the end. my question is should they also change the pipe from the catalyc converter or also change the cat converter? the gibson exhaust sounds really nice and you can barely notice it when the Armada is idling.

If you purchased the Gibson system from a dealer and took it to a shop to install, then YES...take it back. You should have new SS-pipe from BOTH catalytic converters back to tailpipe, including the new muffler, which it sounds like they installed. The improvement in performance comes in the NEW Y-pipe provided by Gibson in their kits. The OEM pipe is about 3" anyway...so you really haven't gained much, IMHO...without the full cat-back install with the new Y-pipe.

Hope this helps,

ST

The Gibson replaces all the piping from the outlet flanges on the cat pipes back. I like it too.. nice deep sound but not to in your face unless you stomp on it. I especially like stomping on it while driving next to a wall.. sounds great!

i purchased the Gibson exhaust from the muffler shop and the guy told me that they only change the muffler and the tailpipe but not the Y PIPE. so do i need to go back there and make them change the Y Pipe since it says on my receipt that they are going to give me a Gibson Catback exhaust system

It appears you purchased just a muffler and not a "Cat Back System" What did you pay if you don't mind me asking.

$370.00 won't buy a Gibson cat back system without installation. So they probably didn't over charge you, but I don't think it is right to call it a cat back system.
The catback system from Gibson includes the Y pipe, which is probably the most critical part of the system. I would talk to them about getting the Gibson Y pipe installed.

how much would the Y pipe from Gibson would cost since it is the most critical part of the system. but howcome when you go to the Gibson website,it doesn't show or say anything about the Y pipe?

A cat back system is designed and tuned at the factory to give you maximum hp and torque gains. You may get the sound you’re looking for but will not get the performance increase in changing out just the muffler. I would not change just the y pipe, to me that is pointless. For what you paid a little more $$ would get you the entire system. Sounds to me like they pulled a fast one on you calling that a cat back. Like others have said the cat back will run all the way to the flanges just after the mid pipes. If they told you it was a cat back system I would put their feet to the fire. They should charge you what a Gibson cat back would cost for the total system and not charge you to finish the install. After all they told you in writing it is a cat back system, so they should make it right.

Yes. basically they just put the gibson muffler and made a custom tailpipe and tip for my Armada. i called gibson and they told me that they can sell the Y pipe separately for about $60 but my concern is,will it fit my Gibson muffler?

If they said cat back, get a cat back. You will only change the sound but not realize the HP gains without the rest of the system. The Y pipe is the restrictive part of the setup. ;)

Its good to know that Gibson stands behind their product. I think its great that they will take that action when the bad install wasn't their fault.

Another update on Gibson exhaust

:) they finally installed the Y pipe on my Gibson exhaust. The engine feels less restrictive now when they installed the Y pipe.really happy that Gibson have taken care of the problem. now i'm just waiting for my K&N Aircharge intake. :D
