Anyone know if there is a mod to turn on the back up camera at any time? Thought it might be helpful while towing to be able to check on my hook up underway.
You need to hook something up to tell the computer that controls the rear that you are in reverse. Not sure what wire though.

I've installed the Pioneer D1 head unit with the backup camera. It allows me to switch to the rear view at anytime.

Did you hook up to Aux A/V input. I thought all the Pioneers had auto sensor for reverse so as soon as you go into reverse you get review camera.

What about us Armada owners that have the OEM camera. What do we have to do to be able to turn on the Cam in the rear without having to install a diff head unit?
I don't have the service manual for the 06' so I can't tell you for sure.
I'm guessing though that it is connected to the reverse wire so when you shift into reverse and the reverse lights power on that is when the camera gets turned on. You might be able to put in a switch with a alternate power source to activate the camera BUT I don't know what voltage it would be or what else is on the circuit so adding another power source could cause some serious damage so you should do some research first. Try and download from the nissantech website the service manual. It cost $20 for a 1 day online subscription in which you can download the whole manual in pdf format.

I cant believe there is no answer to this. Can any one point me to the thread where this question is answered? I want to put in a switch that will activate my backup cam while im driving, doesnt sound that hard but it looks like no one has ever done it.

I would suspect this would be pretty simple to do. I've got the same interest in doing this on my 2011 eventually since I tow a boat but I haven't done any investigating yet. I do have the service manual for my model year so I've attached some diagrams that show how it works in the 2011 ... I'm sure prior model years are similar, though, don't assume the wire colors and pinouts are the same. Just use this as a guide and try to find the service manual for your own car.

Basically there is a 12V signal that comes from the shift when it's in reverse that goes to the A/V unit that triggers the reverse camera to be turned on. I'm guessing all you'd need to do is tap that line and insert 12V power on it to trigger the camera to come on and the AV unit will do the rest.

Note that the wiring is different depending on whether or not you have the navigation system or not.

Thanks for the diagrams. One thing i have heard mentioned which is a concern. What else is on that circuit, some things could be fried or tripped which should not be while driving.
