I've towed my trailer probably 20,000 miles or better. I've been up and down some pretty nasty grades here on the west and I've absolutely never had any brake issues. Even with a bad brake controller once. That was scary but controlling speed when towing should be paramount. I've never smelled them after coming to a stop or anything, I've never overheated them. I would suggest manually using lower gears when descending hilly or mountainous terrain. Just a thought FWIW.
